I think I'm going to get the silver package. An extra $10 for Half-Life 1: Source and Day of Defeat: Source is quite a deal.

The Silver is definitely the best deal. Personally, i'd rather hold out and buy the collectors edition and it all on a DVD. Not a big fan of Steam, although its great to be able to get CS: Source right away.

Looks like I'm cancelling my order for the box game and going with the Silver edition.

Silver Edition for me. I can't wait to get some Counterstrike going tomorrow!

So are there only two retail packages. Silver sounds like what I would eventually get, but I'm not sure if there is a retail equivalent to that. Would like to buy the game with the actual box, but I don't need all the extras, except for the original Half Life.

What do they mean by source? I'm assuming source code....so how can it be playable?

Just curious : Isn't it illegal to offer a prize in a contest that requires a purchase? As far as I'm aware any random drawing must be made available to anyone (via mail request) without pruchase. I don't understand that offer in the Gold set.

Decker, they do it everyday with giveaways from candy bars, mcdonald's, pepsi, etc. All these companies make you buy their product to possibly win a prize
Like Decker said, those types of contests will allow you to mail in an entry. That is why they always say "No Purchase Necessary".

Sweet. Thanks for clarifying Groucho. The games should look vastly improved then.

I don't see how this stuff is worth an extra 30 bucks, but strangely enough, I'm almost compelled to shell out an extra 30. I'm leaning towards Silver though. Can't friggin wait for HL 1 Source. Another thing is that I kinda wish they would send me a copy of the game - I guess that only comes with the gold package. Hrrm...

I don't know, it doesn't look like they'll send you the game with any copy from Steam. The Half Life Collector's box sounds like its just a package with those specific items in it, rather then a game disc.

If you buy HL2 through Steam, does that mean when the game is available, you actually download it instead of buying it? While I have DSL, I only have a 5 gig transfer limit, so obviously that wouldnt work for me. I'm planning on buying the retail boxed release anyway, just curious.

You can actually pre-load the majority of Half-Life 2 right now so that when it's released, you can play it right away. As for getting the actual game disc if you order through Valve, the FAQs on the Valve forums say 'no'. So yeah if you're looking to get the actual game discs then retail is the only way to go. I'd like to add however, that you can back up your steam files on to a CD or DVD.

Wouldn't the Collector's Edition be a better choice or no?
It's ~80 bucks.
In addition to a limited edition DVD-ROM version of Half-Life 2, this Collector's Edition also includes:
Counter-Strike: Source - The next generation of the #1 online action game
Half-Life: Source - Digitally remastered version of the original acclaimed PC game
Free Limited Edition T-shirt - Offered in men's size XL only
Half-Life 2 Prima Book - Information on character backgrounds, the making of the game, and more than 100 pieces of artwork

That collector's edition has too much junk I'd never use. The men's t-shirt would be like a tent on me, and I don't know what the fuck a "book" is. Plus, you don't get DOD: Source for some reason.
I guess you might get your money back on ebay.
At any rate, I bought the Silver package yesterday. Even played a little CS: Source.

Wow, that really sucks. XL only. I know the demographics may show a large and in charge fan base, but can't they go for a Large instead? that way it's not such an over kill for anyone who wears M and it would sort of fit a XL.

I'm skinny and I always buy XL... Large feels too small alot of the time - I feel like the fab 5 are singing "things are gettin better" behind me every time I try one on.
