It's been on my wishlist for a long time now, but I've decided now is the time to buy a projector for my small bedroom at home.

I am going to buy the mid-range Epson EMP-TW200 and a 78" 16:9 screen.

I understand that due to the size of the room, the projected image will probably not reach the outer edge of the screen, but at least I am future-proofed for when I move into my own house.

Read some very good things about this projector, and I'll keep you upto date as to what's happening and what my thoughts are. I'll also post some pictures when its installed if anyone is interested.

Update number 1:

Ordered said projector and screen today. Two hours later, had a phonecall from company I ordered from, saying they couldn't supply me the TX200 as it was discontinued.

He said he's managed to get me a TX200H (the same spec but with 1500 ANSI instead of 1300, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1 instead of 800:1) for £167 less.

Screen will be with me in 5 days, projector 2 weeks...

Chris: If you can, post some pictures of how it looks in your bedroom once you are set up. I've been contemplating on buying a projector for our small bedroom too but I'm not so sure about the viewing distance yet.

Definately will do, with all of the dimensions too.

For info, I found a tool on the Epson website which you can download and input your rooms measurements (distance between screen and projector lens) and it will tell you what size image you will get.

I am getting a 78" 16:9 screen, but by that programme, will only be able to display 71" as the distance to screen from lens will only be 84"

The EMP-TW10H is a cheap, low-end projector, but looks good for small rooms, giving 1 to 1 in projection distance to diagonal screen size ratio!

The screen arrived on Thursday last week, and I finally got it installed in my small bedroom tonight!

Mmm.... not sure. To be honest I didn't research into the different materials. Here's where I got it from.


Small!! I'll guess at 8ft square. That screen pulls down infront of my wardrobes which has a 36" widescreen TV built into it. It's all very compact, but fits in. As I say, due to the distance between the PJ and screen, I'm not going to get a full image, but hey, it's something I can take with me into my house when I buy one!

I recently got the infocus and am projecting onto a 92" screen, ONLY issue I have is that there are only 2 chairs in the room that are far enough back for the picure to be razor sharp. the further back you are the better it looks. distance MAY be an issue for you but hopefully not. Home theater takes on a whole different meaning when you go to the REALLY big screen. re-watching so many movies now...wow! enjoy...

well chris welcome aboard the "Projector" train ... the only way to watch movies at home. i personally have a HD rez pannasonic PT-L500U (1280x720p native rez) and a 106" da-lite screen.

small peice of advise: checkout www.projectorcentral.com and www.avsforum.com of help an hanging and mounting. mount ur screen first. the the PJ second.

Still waiting for the darn projector to arrive!! It's new out in the UK, and thus no one has them in stock.

Only yesterday I finally saw that my VISA had been used - therefore fingers crossed, it's on it's way!!!

If you want to fill your screen and distance is an issue, you should try to bounce it off a mirror.
I am filling a 100" 16x9 Screen by bouncing off a mirror and it works very well. If you read at the Home Theater forums everyone will tell you that you need to buy an expensive First Surface Mirror. I am using a regular $10 mirror in a frame and it works very well. I notice very, very little and what I gain to fill my screen is well worth it. Its worth a try at least.

Found out that they'd charged my card, but not sent the projector! It wasnt expected to ship until the 24th at least! I cancelled it, and have ordered it from somewhere else, for £90 less.

It arrives on Tuesday! At last........!!

Sorry for taking so long, but I've been more interested in WATCHING the thing, than talking about it

It's really good. Just a shame that my tiny room is tiny. Would have loved to fill all the white space on the screen.

Take a look at the photos. Note: The cables coming out of the bottom of the shelf where the projector is situated will be encased in some trunking very soon. Also, my camera wasn't set up properly for 'Night Mode', therefore some of the screenshots look a little fuzzy. I will remedy this very soon and add more photos.

The screen is a 78" 16:9, but due to the size of the room, I get about 70". The screen was £120 ish

The only thing that's holding me back from considering a projector the next time I buy a new tv is the bulb life. With the amount we have the tv on we would either have to alter the way or what we use the tv for or have to purchase bulbs atleast yearly.

Is bulb life constantly improving so that they will start to be able to compete with tv's?

Projector bulbs average about 3,000 hours of usage, which is a 2-hour movie a night for 4 years.

General TV usage is a waste of the bulb life. Do you really need to watch the evening news on a huge screen? I reserve my projector for movies and HDTV only.

WOW! 78" is huge. Even 70" is bigger than anything I could afford to buy as a projection tv.

How is the picture compared to projection tv's or plasma tv's? The colors look really good and bright, but what about sharpness?

Not to get into a p*****g contest but 78" is pretty small for a projector screen. I personally have a 117" screen, and have seen screens go to 144" widescreen with excellent image quality. Bigger isn't necessarily better, however. It depends on your use and viewing environment. Sharpness on projectors is excellent.

In comparison to projection TVs and Plasmas, there are strengths and weaknesses. I recommend finding a decent boutique home theater store that can give you a projection demo. Personally, I found that projection offers far and away the biggest the bang for the buck. You can get jaw-dropping image quality for a price considerably less than RPTVs or flat screen TVs that are 1/4 to 1/9 the size. You do need space and very good light control, however.
