Philips 642 DVD Player - Power On Question
I got a Philips 642 a few weeks ago and for some reason can't figure out how to completely or fully turn it off. On the remote and on the player there is an On button. When pressed it either is in Play mode or the button turns red and it is in Stand-by mode. I tried holding down the On button, but that didn't help either.
Anyone have any idea how to completely turn it off, besides unplugging it?
Thanks

That's the way most DVD players and other electronics are these days. They have to be "on" to some extent in order to recognize and respond to a signal from the remote control. The only other option is to unplug the player.
Why is this a big deal?

It isn't a big deal, but I would rather leave it plugged in and have it completely off then have to plug it in everytime I want to use it.

Maybe you should just learn to embrace the red LED... realizing it's your friend

I still don't get why you need the player to be "completely off." It's designed to go to standby mode.
In fact, truth be told, every piece of HT gear you have that has a remote control, including your TV, VCR, surround receiver, etc., are in standby mode unless you unplug them. They just may not call it that and they may not have a red LED on the front to let you know.

It's been proven that your electronics perform better and longer with a trickle of electricity flowing through them, rather than switching them on and off.

Well I was unaware that other devices are also on standby. I just would rather leave it plugged in, but I didnt want it to waste electricity by being what I though was "on."

Seriously, there are plenty of things to concern yourself with in life...this isn't one of them.
