Anyone else kinda sad to see Admiral Piett die?

He seemed a cool dude and all. Unlike most of the Imperial officers in the trilogy he knew when to keep his mouth shut and how to make results. Sadly he never new that an out of control A-Wing would lead to his demise. He was a straight shooter among yes men. But alas he knew the risks. Capti...uh Admiral Piett I salute you.

After surviving Darth Vader's wrath for so long, yeah. He got lucky at the end of TESB, when Vader was feeling too paternally towards Luke.

At least he had the coolest death of all the characters from the OT.

I'll have to disagree on the coolest death scene. That award has to go to Empire Stikes Back. When the asteroid his the bridge of a Star Destroyer and you see the holographic image of the Imperial officer get wiped out.

I still say "Apology accepted, Captain Needa" is the best death scene in the saga.

You know, I just watched that recently and thought "hey, poor guy".

I suppose war is hell, even in space...

FYI, Kenneth Colley played Admiral Piett in both Empire and Jedi.

I really enjoyed his performance... you really could tell this sense of unease.

(By the way, he was Jesus in Life of Brian)

WOW!

I'm sorry, but he'd got a nice niche here. Supporting characters in Star Wars AND Monty Python? Geeks must wait on him hand and foot and fan him with four-foot feathers.

Good actor. Shame he condemned himself to Hell so early in life.

That rules!

I always hoped that General Veers survived. He seemed to be a) intelligent, b) not terrified of Vader, and c) not necessarily evil. He attacks the rebel base, but isn't sitting up there in his AT-AT shouting "Die scum!" or anything.

Plus, anybody who commands a regiment of AT-ATs is just plain cool.

Piett never had it too easy, so he must've buttered Vader up to remain under good terms. His best scene is probably the one where Ozzel is fighting for his life, and Piett is giving him a very wary sidelong glance at what might be his future. Yet when Piett is given the instant promotion by Vader, he seems to be both elated and scared to death at the same time.

ESB always plays out like a lesson in corporate governance to me. There are a bunch of lines you can use in real-life work situations.

"Asteroids do not concern me, Admiral. I want that ship, not excuses."
"Don't fail me again, Admiral"
"I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further. "
"Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly? "
"Apology accepted, Captain Needa. "

Are we sure he died? I though maybe an asteroid hit and just wiped out their communications

Hmm. You see the bidge of the ship get destroyed. And then the guy puts his arms up to protect his face from something and then it's wiped out. So I'm guessing he died.

Yeah, you see that the bridge no longer exists after the astroid hits it. It was cool to see when I first saw ESB in WS back when the SE came out. In the old P&S versions that dude is cut out and I thought they added that into the SE version but it was always there, just hidden in Fool Screen

Well thats my point. I don't think its the same destroyer. The establishing shot is of a Star Destroyer next to the Executor getting wiped out. The next shot is of some guy disappearing.

I guess the question is if there is some kind of delay in these holograms. If there is a delay, then yes it can be the same guy, if there isn't a delay, its not the same guy.

Of course it's the same ship. Why would Lucus put in the two shots one of the bridge getting hit and the next of an officer put his arms up in defence and then the signal fading out? The shots are within a second of eachother. Vader was talking to the captains of the escort ships. Why else would this scene happen if it wasn't the same ship? There was a delay to show you it was the same ship. One hell of a big coincidence if it wasn't.

Big coincidence? There are tons of ships in there, heck they call it the "fleet" later in the movie, so is there more than than just those 3 ships in the asteroid field. Lots of ships were getting hammered. Who knows?

If you wanna go by Lucas's commentary as canon: "I always liked the moment in this scene where an asteroid hits one of the Star Destroyers, and then when we go to the briefing with Darth Vader, one of the guys gets killed. The image flickers off."

it's parallel editing. Goes all the way back to 1902's A Trip to the Moon. Remember the shot of the moon getting shot in the eye by the "space capsule"? The next shot is on the surface, showing the capsule landing again.

It's definitely supposed to be the same guy.

Piett rocks!

Whenever I see him in Firefox, I call him the Russian Piett.

The best part is that he basically plays the same character in both Empire and Firefox.

Just look at the parallels:

And in both movies, his bosses deal with him diplomatically, because while he screwed up, he is obviously very respected by his bosses.

Put me down as a member of the Piett fanclub.
