Flashes in the lightsaber battle in a New Hope
So, at the end of A New Hope, when Kenobi and Vader are dueling, every time the ligthsabers touch, there's this bright, almost yellow, flash. I didn't remember that from the originals, or even the special editions. Did anyone else think this was distracting? Were the flashes always in there and now they're just "enhanced?"

Yes, the flashes were always there. They are more noticeable now because of the newly remaster anamorphic transfers. You have to remember, we've never seen Star Wars with such stunning, anamorphic widescreen transfers before. So things we didn't notice before, stand out even more in these new DVDs. But the flashes were there.

I never noticed them on the LD's but my son tells me they're there and he always assumed it was an error. But because we have been assured these are error free, you can be sure it was intentional.

"The thinner atmosphere near the Death Star's hangar area causes the crystal projections of the lightsabers to release green/yellow friction charges. In earlier versions, you can witness the hangar doors closing cause the glow of Vader's saber cool to a whiter saturation."
But seriously, the boosted colors of the new DVD transfer make the flashes more noticeable, as if they were added.

There are also red/pink flashes in the opening gun battle on the rebel ship. These were also"always there" - but they are terribly distracting. It looks like the editor just slapped in a whole frame of color for a half a second or so.
