Retro Game Challenge #9 (9/27-10/3)
Week 9 is over!
The Rules:
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 11:59 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
The game should be at least 10 years old and hopefully easy enough for everyone to get running.
Please don't use continues, savestates or 5 year old Polaroids for any scores you submit.
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.
The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)
Dig Dug (Atari, rev 2) - Winning Score: D300 227400
Joust (White/Green label) - Winning Score: D300 263600
Ninja Spirit - Winning Score: keyed 212500
The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your nameengraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!
This Week's Winners:

I'm tempted to play a quick game of Dig Dug just so I can have the high score for a few minutes, until someone who is actually good at it plays.
Can you just submit a screenshot of the current high score in the game, even if it's a score that you got a year ago? Obviously, nobody will know, but is that against the spirit of the challenge? I would think so, but in that case I might be saying "use the current score on there, the high score is old"...

Dvdsky: Yeah, you could've always just said ignore the high score on the screen. I've posted scores where I hadn't beaten the default high score

Anybody get past level one of Ninja Spirit yet? I tried playing it a few times on the weekend and haven't had that much trouble getting past the end of the first level since Kung Fu Master, which started this whole thing.

It's interesting... if you watch the bottom of the screen while playing, one of your weapons will start blinking. My guess is the game is telling you which weapon will work best in which situation. I usually ignore that though, and just stick with the sword. It works best for me.
it is a pretty cool game. I had this way back in the day on my (don't laugh) TG-16. Don't you think this guy walks kind of slow for a ninja, though?

Maybe he's trying to be sneaky. You're not a ninja, so you wouldn't know Why would anyone laugh at a TurboGrafx-16? I had a Sega Master System

Boss 2 is tough!
*EDIT*
check that... he's not that tough after all! And level three actually takes place out of the forest! Woo hoo! What's with these lame ass ninjas shooting at your feet? Isn't that against some kind of ninja code or something?

Not even Dig Dug? I've used MAME since some time in 1997 and I can't remember having speed problems for any early 80s games
Maybe that's because they used scanlines by default back then. Maybe you should turn that on so it only has to draw every other line.

If you don't know where to start, here is the FAQ
Once you have MAME installed you need the game ROMS from my webpage (click on the cabinets) and put them in the roms folder of your MAME installation.
The whole rom thing is sort of a grey area as far as piracy is concerned so they can be hard to find. It's covered well in the FAQ. I provide the 3 games we play each week so people don't have to track them down.
I just added a link to MameWorld on my site. There are lots of useful links and info there. Just look along the left and right columns.
