Empire Strikes Back is the best!

out of protest, I'm not watching ANH until last (Han Shoots First), but Empire looks great! I'm not a Star Wars nut, but watching this compared to the VHS copy of a copy I've had for years, this is beautiful. And I think this is the movie Lucas screwed with the least. (I feared that some character would utter the word, "midiclorians" which would make me scream.) For a sequel, I like this more than Godfather II (yes, I am not kidding--I never liked the Michael storyline in that movie).

IMO it's better to keep all Star Wars threads (prequel trilogy ones aside) here for the time being just to keep the clutter down in DVD talk and Movie talk, as well as to hopefully limit thread crapping by people that don't like the movies.

isn't that one of the big questions? since this dvd edition has never been released in theaters, is it a movie release? or is it just a dvd release?

You won't ever watch ANH again.

Call me a contrarian but I always thought Return of the Jedi was better. I realize revisionist history over the decades has elevated Empire above the other two original Star Wars movies but Empire only works as the middle part of a story. If released on its own, it wouldn't be so nearly revered.

That's a good point but if accepting it as a part of a whole, it's mood and atmosphere are easily the best of the entire saga. And not because it's "dark", but because it raises the stakes and it takes that seriously.

I struggle whether I like Empire over Jedi. Hands down, I enjoy Empire all the way through while Jedi has a boring middle, but the Jabba palace sequence and Luke's final confrontation with Vader are by far my favorite moments of the entire trilogy.

Re: Empire Strikes Back is the best!

I actually totally disagree that Empire only works as part of a larger story. I wholly believe it can work as a stand-alone. Although good luck finding someone who's watched it that way.

Re: Empire Strikes Back is the best!

For ~15 years I'd seen Empire solely as a Stand-alone. I was pumped when it came out and saw it during opening week. When it ended with no resolution and no movie to complete it in sight I was rather pissed that I'd wasted my time/money on the viewing. I refused to see Jedi until 15 or so years later when it was on TV and I finally caved. I liked the first half of that one but hated, and still do, the Ewoks and the lame, overly drawn out, ending.

To this day, my favorite remains "Episode 4" or, as we called it then, Star Wars.
