There are about 10-12 active threads on this it seems at all times. I've seen about 3 new ones today.
I think a good preemptive move would be to create a sub-forum now. When its released, there'll be threads started daily on A New Hope, then on Empire Strikes Back, then on Return of the Jedi, then on the bonus disk. There will be sub threads for all of these movies. Some threads will discuss the changes, some the movie, etc. All will be threadcrapped to hell (I'll be guilty of it myself).
To prevent general threadcrappers and complainers from whining about the amount of Star Wars thread, I think this would be a good idea.
It is one of the most anticipated (if not THE most) DVDs of all time; yet it's 3 DVDs at once so naturally there is 3 times the excitement and information to discuss.
If there is a more "formal" way for me to propose this, please let me know.

a subform with threads all locked.....that's what it will look like. I would say close to 90% of all Star Wars threads end up closed.
Toad
09-13-04, 03:12 PM
Hopefully this would prevent that. In my opinion, threads should be locked when there are personal attacks and/or threadcrapping (which I have been guilty of in the past).
The point of a sub-forum is to discourage bashers and crappers from entering, thereby making locking unnecessary.
100% of all Star Wars threads have been in either Movie Talk or DVD Talk, where lots of anti-Star Wars people hang out. We have yet to see what percentage would be locked if the DVDs are given their own, albeit temporary, space.

c'mon you don't like threads such as "how will you watch star wars on DVD?" ;)
What I think should happen is that a thread needs to be open for the people who love star wars blindly and star wars haters threads for those who feel "raped". This would split up the groups so each can talk about star wars in there own fashion.
I created a favorite actor/actress bashing thread which was structured in in a way where you and pin point where the hate started and vent about it. I thought it was a succuss, wasn't closed...and looking back, it was really funny.
Having these threads could reduce the clash with the fanboys with the "Lucas raped boys"

I think the "How will you watch star wars on dvd" is one of the dumbest threads around. Do we really need to know or even care about what the actions of each other will be around the event of watching a god damn dvd? ugh.

They're probably discussing it over with Geoff. It's different with locking threads and suspending. This isn't really something that's time-critical. We still have a week. When they learn about a problematic thread or member, it's probably almost always past the point of "redemption" so they have to act quickly.

And can I further restate that your reason is not the sole reason for creating a sub-forum (not a thread). The chief reason for doing so is that I believe the DVD Talk forum will be overrun with Star Wars threads in the coming days. A secondary reason is to deter threadcrappers.
I'm not familiar with the distinction of a thread as a circle jerk - but I do know that many times when people think they are having a "discussion" is leads to a locked thread. Which then inevitably leads to a re-opening of that thread.
Will a sub-forum stop this? No - but as I said, it may deter it. Again, that's not the chief reason. The main reason is benefit all the people who don't care about Star Wars but aren't bored enough to click on the threads. They won't be overwhelmed by the number of hypothetical threads if they're invisible.

Exactly.
Threadcrappers need to be immediately suspended if they thread crap in that subforum, the mods should post a thread stating so as soon as the forum goes up.
There can be debate threads in there, where haters can say what they don't like about the movies, and others can defend them, etc.
Just suspend anyone that takes bashing outside of these threads into more general threads not actively debating the quality of the movie (which is the very definition of a thread crap).

Thread crapping needs to be enforced more harshly. People are free to bash SW and other movies till their hearts content--they just have to do it in the appropriate threads. That paraphrases how the thread crapping thread rule is explained in the thread in DVD talk. Too often it just goes ignored, even when posts are reported.
Review threads, threads asking whether people like the changes, etc. are the place for negative comments. Not general threads announcing what's going to be on the dvd, threads asking what people would like to see in a future re-release or any other examples you can think of where the point is not to discuss the merits of the film.

I do totally. But threads still get pulled off topic. This is the net, the only place where a lot of people can be all macho and stand up for themselves. Thus you get people being rude and obnoxious (on both sides) and every thread gets pulled off topic, and ruined even for those of us that just ignore the losers (on both sides) as it becomes impossible to carry out an intelligent discusion in the midst of the inevitable flame wars.
That's why the mods need to step in and take care of the problem causers (on both sides) and thus allow normal discussion to flow.

No that would be fine, as long as they didn't lace it with "luca$ sucks" comments.
Sue me, it wasn't the best example in the world, but you get the drift. Keep bashing comments in threads asking for opinions, and out of threads not discussing the quality of the movie.

GMC, I think the point that you're not getting is that there SHOULDN'T be anything to ignore in the first place if everyone posted where they should. Do you see the same problem in other threads? Threads are closed for many reasons. One being that discussion of the same material is already happening in another thread like it was in that one.
If you can throw your comments in an already existing thread, it saves a lot of room and is a better choice then starting up a whole new thread and clutter up the forum anymore then it already is.

Just because I didn't enunciate my reasons in the thread doesn't mean I didn't have a reason to close the thread. The thread in question was some guy posting about how he got his Star Wars DVDs. Woo hoo. Kind of a dead-end thread with not a lot of possibility for real discussion, in my opinion. I'd rather wait until the release date when people can discuss the discs together, instead of essentially posting "cool" or "you suck for getting them early."
I would rather close dead-end or repeat threads, which a lot of Star Wars threads have been, than make a subform when it's not necessary. Right now, there are only two or three Star Wars threads on page 1 in the Main Forum. The subforum might be necessary next Tuesday, but it's a little early to have one if we're going to have one (again, in my opinion... not speaking for Geoff or the other mods).

Thanks for posting Static Cling. I disagree that it's too early, and I disagree with the closing of that thread -- I stupidly tried to reply to it without realizing it was locked, wanting to ask if people had gotten the DVD at a B&M. So I think it was serving a purpose, but my opinion doesn't count and I'm cool with that.
You are right though - 2 or 3 threads on page one is certainly not a lot. But yesterday, there were 6-7. I bet in each of them someone made a comment like "oh great, another Star Wars thread" or something to that affect.
It's not a big deal one way or the other to me, but I can't see that actually making the sub-forum would be detrimental.
Anyway, thanks again for responding - I am happy that a moderator/administrator finally looked at the thread.

The thing that's funny to me is the number of non-fans who come into a thread just to rag on the fans.
Or the people who try to pretend they're not fans by referring to others as "fan boys" - a term I still don't understand. I guess I just don't use terms/words for the sole reason that other people use them. Sort of like "Joe Six Pack."
You can't win here with Star Wars; I think some of these poor people think it's actually cool or fun to be a giant pain the ass, and post nothing but smartass or negative posts. Hey - that's their problem in the end, not mine; they have to live with themselves (I'm sure they're VERY happy people) ;).
I think it's funny that so many moderators have commented in the other posts under this Forum, yet only one has here. This is supposed to be a DVD Forum; yet "name change" threads get more moderator feedback than arguably the biggest DVD release (or most important DVD release) yet. Oh well.

Sure is.

For another, read the "Audio Changes" thread.
For another, go to Movies and read the attacks and jabs at fans there.
