Why can't any video game character in a FPS...
... climb a fucking ladder?
My super secret agent (XIII) is skilled in hand to hand combat, the use of military weapons, and the fine art of stealth. But trembles in fear when it comes to ... ladders! If he's not falling down the things, he's getting himself glued to the top or bottom rung.
Is there a FPS around that can handle these babies? I just sent my secret agent to the big tutorial level in the sky because he can't handle the rungs on a fire escape...
Perhaps eliminate them through level design - replacing them with escalators and elevators. Or, use the totally kick ass (and game redeemer) the grappling hook! Oh yeah!

I understand what you're staying. I hate it when you're at the top of a ladder and think your holding onto it. You try to move down and instead of descending safely and slowly, you plunge to a violent death.

Climbing up ladders seems to always work, but a few games give you trouble on your way down. I've managed to not have much trouble with ladders in FPS games, and I've played most all of them.

I've found the ladders in Battlefield 1942 to be sufficiently "sticky", in that I can always go up and down them how I want, and never fall off of them when I don't want to.
Unfortunately, the tradeoff is that stairs can be lethal at times....

Maybe it's just me... but I have a problem with the "approach" to going down a ladder.
In the games I've played; you're expected to go down a ladder face first... with your gun/knife/rocket launcher bobbing merrily in front of you. In real life, I timidly back up to a ladder, and shakily climb down... Christmas lights dangling behind me.
I guess your typical FPS action hero is a little braver than I am...
BTW - I just completed XIII - having to redo the last boss battle due to a nasty spy/ladder interface during my final escape...

They should make it that when you walk up to a ladder and go off the side that your dude just automatically grabs the ladder. That would solve most problems.

If a ladder is the only option, it should be automatic that you character grab on to it when going down. Why would you ever jump off a roof if there is a friendly ladder near by.
Going up a ladder shouldn't be automatic.

So I guess it can be done!
