I read Jeffrey Robinson's DVD review of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates - The Complete First Season at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=12153 and must strongly if amicably disagree. It's a terrific adaptation of a British "cosy" - a whole sub-genre of mysteries that has no real U.S. equivalent, but is in part based on just those things he seems to complain about: slow pacing, domestic subjects, etc. Not understanding the British dialogue is laziness on his part, however, since it's pretty clear even for a non-traveller like myself. There's a melancholy sub-text as well, which if I remember rightly, doesn't clarify itself completely in the first series but does add a textural richness...that continues to grow as the series goes alone. And if you only know Routledge as Hyacinth Bouquet you're in for a serious reappraisal of her acting chops. Definitely and highly recommended for fans of British myseteries.
BTW the "boy" became one of the hobbits in that other series.
