View Full Version : Star Trek Generations SE RECALLED!

It's official, folks. After saying they were and then saying they weren't, Paramount is again saying that they ARE recalling the Star Trek: Generations - Special Collector's Edition so that the inaccurate spec listing on packaging can be corrected. The title will NOT be released on 9/7 as originally scheduled. Naturally, since the discs have already shipped out to retailers, many copies will still find their way into consumers' hands on 9/7. Whatever you do, DON'T pay a huge price for the disc on eBay. Paramount expects to announce the revised street date soon, so don't get ripped off by unscrupulous types on the secondary market. The title is still coming, and sooner rather than later. We'll give you the new date as soon as Paramount sends it over.

I'm happy to say my DDD order shipped yesterday. :D

Yeah we wouldn't want Paramount to give out the wrong idea that they actually put trailers on their DVD releases.

Rammsteinfan
09-02-04, 11:00 AM
Hehe, it really is silly. OKAY, if your going to put TRAILERS on it, great, if your going to change the cover, forget it. It wouldnt be the first time a cover is wrong.

Okay, can we get an insert to make up for it now? ;)

What if a newly commissioned insert to make up for the delay then mistakenly mentions the trailers?

Hmm, if they put the new DVDs into a starship and go around the sun really fast at warp speed, they can deliver the new DVDs before the recall is even announced! Brilliant!

The real reason for the recall is that they're pulling the cross-dressing featurette. ;)

So, what exactly is the issue with the trailer. What is in it that could possibly need "clearance"?

Music. I believe the Generations trailer had some music licensed for it that Paramount now does not have the rights to distribute. It is not at all uncommon for movie trailers to contain music from other movies or sources. Think of it as "temp music" or something. Anyways, it was probably going to cost Paramount a lot of money to license the music for the DVD release.

ZackR
09-02-04, 12:41 PM
And according to the Trailers listing at Filmmusic.com (http://www.filmmusic.com/trailers/?cid=S&id=587), the Generations trailer used the following music:

"The Planets: Neptune" - Gustav Holst
&
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) - Jerry Goldsmith

So, yes, I would be willing to bet it was music clearance issues.

bboisvert
09-02-04, 01:55 PM
Hmmmm... I suppose I don't understand how these things work, exactly.

I would think that Paramount already has rights to use the ST:TNG theme in pretty much anything they want. And Holst's stuff is in the public domain.

Maybe it was the specific performance that was licensed? If that's the case, I don't see why they couldn't just replace it. Oh well, no biggie either way. Stupid reason for a recall, though -- a simple printing error?

If you have a BestBuy available to you: there's a fairly good chance this will be on the shelf Saturday.

I picked up Duel the Saturday before it's release and that wasn't the first "minor" title on which it happened.

They should have let it go as is and for the people that cared about the cover they could have set up a customer service number where people could call and request an official cover with the changes on it. They are recalling a DVD for what? The 2% that give a shit?

Read above /\ music rights.

At the HTF there's some discussion that the transfer is of a lower quality than the 16x9 one released in region 2 a few years ago, I'm hoping the recall is to fix that problem. This is one of my personal favorites and I got rid of my old 1 disc a long time ago and I've really been itching to watch this. I hope Paramount makes good.

From Digital Bits:

Howdy, kids. We've just received an official statement from Paramount about the Generations delay...

"There is a typographical error on the Star Trek Generations Special Collector's Edition DVD. It inadvertently notes a teaser and theatrical trailer that are not on the DVD. As a result, this product is being recalled and street date (originally September 7) is being delayed. We will provide further information on a new street date shortly

these were shipped to all Best Buys and unless we receive an official notice to not put them out, they will be on the shelves.

At this point, it is cheaper for Paramount to pay whatever $$$ it costs to license the music than to reprint the movie. Paramount knows this, the music holder knows this, so I would expect Paramount to pay out of its ass for the rights to Gustav Fuck Face or whatever his name is,

That's not the point. At another forum, the people that have already gotten theirs are saying that this new 16x9 transfer is of lower quality than the 16x9 transfer released in Region 2 a few years back.

Any guesses on how long the delay could be? I hope this isn't like Ed Wood or something.

Long, long ago, Halloween H20's packaging listed a commentary track that wasn't on the disc. Eventually, the package was updated in future printings, but I doubt that anyone really noticed. I wonder why Paramount couldn't do something like this, rather than recall the whole damn thing.

At least I can still buy Dawn of the Dead on Tuesday.

I found paid shipping was the difference for me getting a copy of the recalled Duel release last year from Amazon. Reason I know is because I had placed two different orders after I found out Amazon had copies available. First order I used free shipping but it was cancelled. Second order I opted to pay for shipping was received.

I went to BB today and talked with a girl there, she went into the back and said that they were recalled and not with the other movies to be put out Tuesday. Poop. Its silly, who cares if its a slight misprint... if they are GOING to put the trailer on there, great! if not, just let it be. its not like it was gonna sell millions and millions of copies anyways.

Defiant1
09-05-04, 06:54 PM
I'm really surprised Paramount recalled it over such a small thing. Why didn't they recall ST:VI for having the much bigger error of upside-down disc art? One of the later DS9 series sets also has a large fleet of ships flying backwards throughout the seven discs as well.

Got mine at a Borders on Friday. I went in and didn't see it on the shelf, so I asked a clerk for it. He looks it up in the computer, it says there are two on hand and he makes a comment it's probably on a display up front. After searching all the displays in the store, he says, "Maybe it's still in back because they didn't think it came out yet." (He's saying this while I am eyeing the 9/14 release of Rocky and Bullwinkle Season Two sitting on their shelf.) He goes in back and brings out two copies. I snag one and a friend I am with snags the other one. They were selling for an unbelievable low price of 14.99. At Borders, I was expecting to pay at least 24.99-29.99 for the thing.

I just wanted it to own. My friend isn't even opening his. I ripped mine open right after I got home and put in the bonus disc and watched the movie Saturday. I was disappointed that it wasn't an extended cut, but after viewing the less than disappointing deleted scenes, I wasn't too upset. I am just glad to have it on DVD.

Apparently, Wal-Mart didn't get the recall memo (or ignored it). The one I went to had about 8 copies for sale. I decided to pick one up. I don't need the sticker on the outside package telling me that there are actually no trailers on the discs (which is what Paramount is apparently going to do). If they were actually going to put the trailers on the discs or tweak/improve the transfer, I would have waited for the new release date. Unfortunately, there is no indication this is going to happen.

This is what dvdreview.com writes about ST: Generations: (http://www.dvdreview.com/fullreviews/star_trek__generations.shtml)

"The presentation is free of defects or blemishes, rendering a very clean picture throughout. Color reproduction is very good, bringing out the best of the colorful costumes and settings, truly giving the film an otherworldly feel at times. Black levels are rock solid and create deep shadows that never lose detail. However, the transfer also exhibits some shimmering problems. Especially the close-ups of Data’s face and the desert scenes reveal these problems. The shimmering seems to be a problem of edge-enhancement applied too liberally to the transfer and is becoming very distracting at times. Many shots also reveal halos around contours as a result of the edge-enhancement. The compression has been handled well without out notable compression artifacts."

I found two copies at Border's near me today, the only people in town to have actually put them out anyway. Everyone else had pulled them. I went ahead and got it because I have no hope whatsoever that they will actually put the trailers on the disk. It's much cheaper to reprint new inserts than it is to press their entire inventory of discs, so I'm sure they'll just print new inserts that don't say the disc has trailers on them.

Finally found it at Wal-Mart here in Phx, and they even pricematched to CC's 12.99 ad!

In my searching, a Best Buy employee said they pulled them and actually knew about the recall. CompUSA, Circuit City and Target employees said they never even saw them come into the store.

Paramount is 99.9999% likely just going to change the packaging of the disc. It's not worth their time or money to re-author the disc for two trailers, that they do not have the music rights secured for.

This whole mess inevitably comes down to some dupe of a customer, and thier money grubbing lawyer, seeing visions of some type of lawsuit involving false advertising.

K-Mart was the magic spot for me. They had about a half dozen copies. I brought it home and played it, and the disc skipped and wouldn't work. I got ticked, thinking it must have been a defect that caused the recall rather than the trailers, but when I took out the disc and turned it over, it was completely covered in greasy fingerprints. I've heard people on here talk about pulling items mint out of a case and finding fingerprints all over them, but this is the first time I've seen it. I gave it a careful cleaning and now it works fine.

Package change only:

From Digital Bits

Paramount has informed us that the revised street date for their delayed Star Trek: Generations - Special Collector's Edition is 9/28. But judging by the e-mails we've been getting, plenty of copies are now available on store shelves despite the recall. Keep in mind that the only difference between these two releases will be the wording of the spec list on the back of the packaging- the actual discs are the same. Consider yourself warned. We don't want you getting ripped off on eBay or anything

Got a copy at Best Buy. Don't give a rat's ass about the packaging mistake, but I didn't want to wait 3 weeks to watch it either :p.

If anyone is interested it's the BB on Dale Mabry in Tampa, FL. They had about 5-6 copies left after I got mine.

I found it at Best Buy in Fullerton. I picked up a copy and saw another copy on the shelf.

Interestingly enough, I couldn't find Clerks X! Best Buy didn't have any, and Target didn't have any. Target also didn't have any widescreen copies of The Ladykillers, though they had plenty of shelf space for it.

I went to my local Wal-Mart on Tuesday and they had none. (They also had no copies of Clerks X.)

In fact, the dude there was so clueless, when I asked about Star Trek: Generations, he pointed towards the Original Series Season 1 DVD set. I told him, “no; Star Trek: Generations. It’s a Star Trek movie that was to be released today.” He said he would check his “list,” but after supposedly doing so, he claimed he could find nothing about it (or Clerks). Ah, the joys of shopping at Wally World….

I also checked Target, CD Warehouse (just because it was convenient; didn’t really expect them to have it), and Tower Records. No one had it. Tower Records was indeed aware of the recall and had complied by sending their stock back.

Because of my work schedule, I have simply not had a chance to look at other retailers. I am planning to go check at Best Buy and another Wal-Mart today (I’ll hit Circuit City too if I have the time), but I’m not holding my breath at this point.

I wouldn't bother with Circuit City. The computer won't let you buy it and even the store manager can't do anything about it.

Borders was cool. They had no clue.

And I haven't watched the whole movie yet but no problems so far on my JVC XV-523GD.

i bought mine tonight after work at walmart and got home an the 1st disc was loose but nothingdamaged to bad. But there was no insert.
This is the 1st star trek SE i have bought so far, and was wondering if the other star trek SE's also do not have any inserts. This ticks me off that there is no insert even for a SE dvd.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture through Star Trek V had inserts. By the time VI came out, Paramount had stopped putting inserts in their releases.

I finally watched this disc yesterday and was pretty iimpressed by the DTS track . . . WAY better than the SE Star Trek discs. :)

I watched about two hours of the special features and again, was impressed by the content. Although I'm not sure why: the alternate ending they showed was from an unfinished print.
They said that they screened the film for a test audience then felt by their reaction, (or lack of), that they needed to change it. Wouldn't it seem that they should have included a finished print?

As it was, the ending was pretty bad and rightly changed, but I guess that just puzzled me a bit.
I've picked up all the Trek SE movies so far and although I don't want to pick a favorite, this disc certain made an impression. ;)

Oh yeah . . . (back on topic) . . . K-Mart $14.99

Got it at Circuit City in Fort Lauderdale (US 1, near Sunrise Blvd). Customer service had to ring it up, and they could only ring it up as a "service charge," not the actual DVD. Still some left in the sci-fi section (not in "new releases"). It's in the sale flyer this week, so make sure you have that with you during check-out because this totally confused the customer service wenches.

...raises hand....

Looked in two cities worth of stores - Circuit City, Best Buy, & Walmart - not a copy to be found. Circuits & BBs both cited memos they got telling them to not put them out. Walmarts said they never had them.

But if they'll be out in 3 weeks, I can wait.

Me. I saw it at my local Future Shop on Tuesday but didn't buy it as I was waiting for an unadvertised sale at Best Buy today. Lo an behold, BB didn't have it and FS had pulled it from the shelves when I went back. To top it all off, amazon.ca jacked the price up another $1.50 (although they say they ship within 3-4 days). I guess I'll have to wait until the 28th.

Found some at my local Media Play

I just wanted the commentary for this and at times it seems like the writters hated this movie and something they didn't even get.
They didn't seem to know for sure if Kirk was in the Nexas(sp?) for 80 years or just got there. They say in the movie he just got there, that there is no time in the Nexas (SP?)

Well, Whoopi does a voice over that says from Kirk's perspective it was as if he just got there...but that voice over seems like something they had her add in post production rather than part of the script. Probably added after screening audiences couldn't figure it out either!

when Rick Berman introduces the alternate ending, he tries to cover up the fact by saying at first that the decision to change the ending wasn't due to a test audience, but then immediately backtracked and said there was the test audience. by now, he could've gotten his excuse straight before the camera rolled. ha ha.

If only Berman would have realized that he would have had a better film if he hadn't killed Kirk at all! But that's what the series turned into - either kill off a character or blow up the ship (or in the case of Generations - do both!). Leonard Nimoy and Harve Bennett should have copyrighted Spock's death scene and when they blew up the Enterprise. :)

It is interesting that in 3 of the 4 Next Generation films, the Enterprise is either actually destroyed (Generations) or Captain Picard activates (First Contact) or attempts to activate (Nemesis) the self-destruct system.

In contrast, the only one of the six Original Cast movies where the Enterprise is destroyed is Search For Spock. That's also the only one where the self-destruct system is used. Though granted, they crash their commandeered Klingon Bird of Prey in San Francisco Bay at the end of Voyage Home.

Well, I finally got it today. It's now selling for $5 more than when I saw it (briefly) on the shelves back on Sept. 7th which kind of pissed me off.

I didn't know what edge enhancement was but I sure do now! Data's face in particular is a shimmery mess and all sorts of backround stuff is very "edgy" looking (the computer graphics on the Enterprise monitors, various rails and fences, the orbital paths of the planets in the Stellar Cartography room, etc.). I only have a 34" widescreen TV so I can't imagine what it's like on a giant projector.

Other than that though, the picture quality is very nice (the colours are great) and the DTS track is terrific. Great audio commentary too.

Question - which audio track is better? Generations' DTS or Nemesis Dolby 5.1?

All of them up to Star Trek V had inserts, but after that they don't. It's a trend by the studios to move away from having inserts.
