View Full Version : Why is everyone so excited about football season?

The quality of play is so mediocre and there are no outstanding teams.

All the QBs playing today (except Favre but I hate Green Bay) are average and not superstars like Steve Young, John Elway, and Dan Marino.

Does anyone remember anything from 2003 regular season?

If fantasy football and gambling did not exist, the NFL would be in the toilet.

Football in the 90's was much better.

Football in the 90's was much better.

Wow, where to begin.

Peyton Manning, Steve McNair, Tom Brady, Brett Favre and others are far from average.

I remember a lot from last season, as I am sure others do.

Needless to say I disagree with everything you posted.

i can't agree with anything you said either. I think football is just as good as it was in the 90s

I have to disagree here. Quality of play I feel is very good. The plays are complicated, defense schemes are just as complicated, so yeah you don't see that 60 yard TD run of yesteryear. I guess you really have to appreciate technique to like todays NFL. I guess most do since it's the highest rated major sport right now.

As far as outstanding teams. Thats why I personally like it. You just never know who's gonna win. It would suck if you started every year knowing who was basically gonna win. Sure the Pats are the favorite but it's anybodys game.

All the QBs playing today (except Favre but I hate Green Bay) are average and not superstars like Steve Young, John Elway, and Dan Marino.

Uh hello Peyton Manning, Steve McNair, and as much as I hate to say it because he technically hasn't done anything, Michael Vick. This is a new generation of QBs now. Things are changing.

Does anyone remember anything from 2003 regular season?

Yea my skins were 5-11. Gibbs is back. The Pats won the superbowl. McNair and Manning were co-MVPs. I could go on and on....

If fantasy football and gambling did not exist, the NFL would be in the toilet.

May not be as popular but hardly in the toilet. Since every major sport, including bass fishing, has a fantasy game you'd have to say the same for all sports.

Football in the 90's was much better.

I'm still in the air over that.

i think its the same way that music from your generation is always the best

you have a certain age range.. that the stuff that happens during that range, is the greatest ever

its not the game that has changed, its you

Football is WAY more popular today than it has been. It is the mecca of all sports business wise and is definitely "America's Favorite Pastime".

On a personal level, there was much that this season brought to the table. Peyton Manning's crazy year. Jamal Lewis chasing Dickerson's record. The resurgence of the Panthers. DID YOU WATCH THE PLAYOFFS? Panthers v. Rams double OT. Packers Eagles 4th and 26. Seahawks Packers OT. Patriots dominating Peyton Manning. Titans Pats classic game. Im sure Im forgetting many more moments (esp. in the AFC since Im an NFC guy) This was best playoff year Ive seen in years. The SB was very great too. Really boring til just before halftime then things picked up.

Plus the emergence of great runningbacks is astonishing. There has never been a better crop of RBs. LT2, Holmes, McCalister, Alexander,Green, Portis,Lewis.

Yeah, I think that has happened to me with baseball, although I think it is coupled with significant changes to MLB since Budinski took over.

With football, as a Redskins fan, it would be very easy for me to say that football was at its best in the late 80s and early 90s since the Redskins were great, the NFC East rivalries were unmatched, and there were other dominant teams. However, I realize that the game itself is just as good as it has always been.

I have to agree with the original post in part. I enjoyed football much better when there were only a few dominant teams each year. I knew most of the players and I either liked or hated the teams they were on. There was no middle ground. When the best teams matched up against each other it was an epic event. While there was a surprise team or two every year there was plenty of time to get to know the newcomers.

Now-a-days with so many good teams the good has become average. With so many teams in the hunt I have no time or desire to get to know them all. The match-ups each week are as boring to me as watching a game between, say, Des Moines and Oklahoma City. The teams mean nothing to me.

I don't start to get interested until the playoffs begin.

If you were a fan of a "dynasty" team of the 80s/90s, then you think the salary cap sucks and the play is mediocre now. Wake up and realize that the NFL is more popular than ever because more teams have a chance.

FantasticVSDoom
08-31-04, 01:32 PM
And of course if you are not excited about the NFL, then you should at least be excited about college football. Ill admit I like the dynasty era teams, and watch NFL just to watch players I rooted for when they were in college, but I think the game is just as good. I just favor College ball alot more now.

Tandem
08-31-04, 02:42 PM
Absolutely! College football has the passion that the NFL lacks. Every week of the season you can find critical match-ups that are worth watching.

I don't see that in the NFL until after Thanksgiving at the earliest. If teams can get into the playoffs with 6 or 7 losses then the early season games don't have as much importance.

The way the polls (sliding up/down based on most recent performance) and bowls (everyone goes) work, one could say the same about college football. Why do think the ACC scheduled Miami/FSU for Sept 6? ;)

How does the NFL lack "passion"? How do you measure it?

The early games in the NFL have more importance than early games in any other sport.

Good question. I judge it by the level of excitement it brings to me. By that definition the level of passion in the NFL would be different for everyone. I suppose if you are a fan of a particular team then the NFL would be much more exciting.

For me the NFL has become a been there, done that, why am I wasting my time on it kind of thing. I find it difficult to watch a game between two random teams just for the sake of watching a football game.

- As far as the early season games in the NFL being more important than any other sport, I agree, but I was comparing it to the college game. I've already given up watching regular season games of most other sports.

I don't want to come across as a total NFL hater. I'll still pick up the occasional game here and there, most likely if it is broadcast in high-definition.

Don't forget about Jerry Rice, Marshall Faulk, and Brett Favre in the twililght of their careers, (?) Ray Lewis (one of the 3 best defensive players ever) in his prime, Michael Vick's comeback, Dante Hall (possibly the best returner ever), Randy Moss and the new contact rules, and the Patriots win streak.

But forget all that - the NFL right now is the only sport where any team can win it any season. I would have bet my nuts that the Rams when they won it all and the Patriots when they won it all the 1st time were not Super Bowl teams. Can anyone way with certainty that the Raiders, the 2nd worst team in the league last year, for example, will not win the Super Bowl? You can write off at least half the teams in any other sport before the season. This is truly the golden era of the NFL!

Personally, the only time I WOULD watch 2 random teams play is in the NFL. The games all mean so much more, there could always be an exciting play that could completely turn the game around, etc. Man, I just love NFL football. :)

Funny, that's my same argument for watching college football. :)

I've never forgiven the NFL for the time they quit playing halfway through the season. That's the year it all became big business in my eyes, out to make a buck off of the star-struck fans.

I watched preseason football over the Olympics and I would watch any matchup you could name in the NFL over Baseball, Basketball and Hockey combined.

OK, now I'm excited. I watched my first TiVo'd game, Utah vs Texas A&M, on my HD TiVo this morning in just an hour and a half. The thirty-second skip button is perfect for going from the end of one play to the start of the next. Woohoo! All the action in less than half the time. This is going to be a good season.

And before you say it - Yes, I know, I could have saved even more time by skipping the second half entirely. :)
