Week 5 is over!

The Rules:
So far we have only been using MAME (http://www.mame.net/downports.html) to play the games, but that can change.
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 11:59 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
Please don't use continues or savestates for any scores you submit.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here (http://home.comcast.net/~dvdtalk).

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Congo Bongo - Winner: devilshalo 84440 (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7384)
http://img55.exs.cx/img55/89/congo1.png<img src="http://img77.exs.cx/img77/2476/congobongo.jpg" height=334/>

Gyruss - Winner: Mordred 203050 (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8060)
http://img16.exs.cx/img16/284/gyruss.png<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v379/Mordred2003/gyru0004.png" height=275/>

Gokujyou Parodius! - Winner: joeblow69 403300 (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7962)
http://img5.exs.cx/img5/8223/goku0000.png<img src="http://webpages.charter.net/joeblow69/goku0005.png" height=224/>

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. The game should be over 10 years old and hopefully easy enough for everyone to get running. You also get your name engraved with a genuine Sharpie on this eye catching trophy!

This Week's Winners:
<img src="http://home.comcast.net/~dvdtalk/trophy.jpg" align="top"/><img src="http://home.comcast.net/~dvdtalk/engraving5.jpg" height="320"/>

This looks like the best batch of games we've had so far. I'm no big Congo Bongo fan, but even that one seems like it might be fun.

I had to feed it about $1 to get this score. I think the levels start over after this one. I just didn't quite make the last jump to see. I'll let someone else get Gyruss started.

Oh, some tips:
Congo Bongo is definitely a keyboard game, imo.
Gyruss works great on a gamepad with an analog thumbstick
Parodius works best with hallucinogens.

devilshalo
08-30-04, 01:34 AM
Man, Gyruss is a pain! You have to hit either left or right twice depending on which way you want to go so you can circle around to the top of the screen.

Roto

Gyruss worked with an 8 way joystick, up and down work too. Click the games in the first post. There is actually good info there.

Gyrus?!? Damn - it's ON now. I *RULE* at this game.

joeblow69
08-30-04, 09:59 AM
Parodius sure is strange. The levels don't seem to always show up in the same order, either. The first time I got to level 3, it was the easter island guys who spit neon cheerios at you. The second time I got to level 3, it was some party world, with balloons, fruit, and I think kittens with chainsaws.

Best advice I can give to get a high score: Go for the gold bells. If you see a bunch of bells together, shoot them until they all turn gold, then grab them all at once. You'll get all sorts of big bonuses. If you pick up the bells when they are other colors, weird things may happen.

Anyone know why Parodius won't show up as playable in Mame32p 0.84u5? It says the file is failing the audit, but I assume the rest of you are using the same .zip.

It works fine in regular MAME32. I gave up on Plus as my primary version of MAME. I had the same problem with Parodius.

It has <s>child</s> chicken molesting corn! I've never played the arcade version of Sexy Parodius but I had a copy of the game for the Playstation one. There was no child molesting corn (or even cut scenes that I remember) and the "sexy" was kinda overrated. If a giant belly dancer trying to stomp on your ship is sexy then I obviously don't know what sexy is.

My highest score on that game is 70k. I have no idea how you rack up the points like that. I try and get the bells all at once, but when I do that I usually end up dying from some weird direction. And the shields suck cause they only stop bullets or stuff from the front.

That said, the game is ridiculously fun. I'll probably beat it at some point when I have more time.

By that he means Sunday night at 11:30 when nobody has any time left to beat him ;)

Also the shields arent just on the front of all the different ships, or whatever you want to call them. At least one of them has sort of a forcefield all around. I think it's the bird, but I don't remember.

Well this last game was kind of a fluke. I don't really understand what happened. Usually, the gold bell bonus goes 250->500->1000->2500->10000 and then 10000 for every bell after that.

BUT, something happens that resets the bell bonus back to 250. I thought you had to keep getting the bells quickly to keep getting the 10000 bonus. But when I played this time, once I got up to the 10000 bell, every gold bell for the rest of the level gave me 10000.

It was really sad, though. I got almost all the way to the third boss (lip guy) without dying, and then bit the dust by a lone stray bullet in the behind. I wish my little blue guy had a full body condom. :(

Anyway, the first level is really easy, and you should have no problems racking up at least 100000 points after killing the boss. I'm usually around 150000 at that point.

Oh yeah, one last hint: don't die! playing anything after the first level with just the pee-shooter is an excercise in frustration.

Do you use Auto, Semi-manual or Manual? On Gradius I normally go Semi-manual but the stuff just goes by way to fast on Parodius for me to pay attention to the powerups as well.

There are usually so many powerups to pick up i dont see much point in manual.

I don't know how the hell you are picking up all those bells. I can't keep from shooting them and if I stop shooting they either start flying past me or something kills me.

Lampei
09-01-04, 02:39 PM
Damnit, I didn't know you could actual collect those bells...that'll probably make things easier :) I use manual...the pig is awesome :) Just gotta make sure I time selecting things correctly. Oh! sucks.

joeblow69
09-01-04, 06:02 PM
This might help... here's what I can figure out the different color bells do:

Red: Lets you shoot a vertical laser barrier that destroys most things that come in contact with it.

Silver: Your weapon turns into a long phrase in Japanese. Very powerful, but limited direction. Only shoots forward.

Blue: Massive explosion

Green: Invincibility and large ship size. Feel free to go kamakazi, but be careful, sometimes it's tough to tell when this is wearing off

Purple: ?? Doesn't seem to do anything

Gold: Points. 250->500->1000->2500->5000->10000. Sometimes you can keep getting bells for 10000, and sometimes the bell bonus will start over at 250. Not sure what causes this.

Lampei
09-01-04, 06:15 PM
I think I figured out what causes the 10000 bells...

You collect bells up to 10000, but once you miss a bell (let one go off the screen) it resets to 250, but if you keep getting them, it keeps giving you 10000 points per bell.

I tried the screen size settings and it did not work. I am not sure what version of MAME I am using. I will check tonight. I was actually going to try to get into the fray this time since I felt I had a chace with Gyruss. Oh well, I just want to play it now.

I was using Mame32p and Gyruss didn't work.

As for the other games. You can take Congo Bongo feed it bananas for all I care. I can barely finish the first level. Let alone get away from the snakes on level 2.

I been trying to play Gokujyou Parodius! but I normally go into shock within 30 seconds and die. I've never seen a game with so much crap/stuff going on. The designers of this game had a brainstorming meeting about the design and instead of taking out what didn't work, they kept in everything. :johnwoo:  :consume:

I still wish we would've played Parodius Da first. It would just seem lame in comparison now.

So much for me suggesting Crazy Kong or Super Mario Bros. as our next round game. :p

Just so happened I was in the arcade everyday after school when these games were out. That was my drug. These were an upgrade from games like Defender, Robotron, Galaxian. More cartoony and visually more fun.

Plus it's the really old games is kinda why I chose Star Castle. I never was good at Asteroids, but Star Castle was similar and I saw no one really mastering it either so I was on even ground with everyone.

If I had a joystick, I'd be choosing other games like Real Ghostbusters, Sinistar, Food Fight or Smash TV.

These are the ones listed in the mame history.dat

1. Parodius - Tako wa Chikyuu o Sukuu (1988, MSX)
2. Parodius Da! - Shinwa kara Owarai e (1990)
3. Gokujyou Parodius! - Kako no Eikou wo Motomete (1994)
4. Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius (1995, Nintendo Super Famicom)
5. Sexy Parodius (1996)

You must be talking about the 4th one listed there. I'll have to go download an MSX emulator. That system was ahead of its time

And I though Night Driver for the Atari 2600 was cool.

It's not! But strangely, I think Datsun 280ZZZap is.

Hehe.. yeah.

But I checked on Google to confirm.. Parodius 3 nets results on Oshaberi, Parodius 4 hits (very few) on Sexy Parodius.

Tako wa Chikyuu o Sukuu? wha?

Tako is octopus, Chikyuu is Earth (I think). No clue on Sukuu, but it's "Octopus (does something) to the Earth!"

According to that link it's ~ Octopus will save the world ~
That's actually a really cool site if you want to know every possible detail about Gradius

By the way, if anyone is going to beat that Gyruss score they're going to have to do it before level 20. The game gets insane there. For some reason the bad guys intro speed doubles. I died instantly on board 20... can't imagine passing it.

Quit interrupting our conversation of obscure Japanese drugged out video games with your stupid high scores

20 is the first level of Mars. You gotta get past Mars to get to Earth, which is the objective of the game. So you gotta get through 3 levels of that crap to "win", but I think the game starts over from there.

~M~ Don't give up. I'm officially retiring from playing Gyruss. If you can beat that score, the strip of ducttape is yours.

ok, you people with high scores start thinking up new games for next week. I imagine one or more of you could be away for the weekend. I'll be here and will make a new thread at the usual time.

Assuming ~M~ doesn't usurp my score, I choose Elevator Action.

I'm available to suggestions. I can let you decide Roto because I'm not sure how popular my choices would be for anyone other than me. :p

Satan's Hollow
1943
Gaplus
Xevious
Bomberman
Mr. Do
Bump n Jump
Real Ghostbusters

Or I can stick with the monkey theme. It is the year of the Monkey y'know. ;)

I don't really care about popular. Elevator Action will probably be enough if we play that. I'm the one that picked Journey! That's why I decided to do 3 games.

Is it really the year of the monkey? None of those really jump out at me. At least not like when Pixy screamed for me to choose Flicky :)

I loved 1943 (though was never very good at it); the others I don't think I've ever really played. If one of them is good though, I'm all for it.

Gaplus is the sequel to Galaga. All of those games are pretty good save for Satan's Hollow.

I'll pick an easy one this time, and go with my second choice from the last round: Nibbler!

Roto

I like that choice  The only score I think is in any danger of being beaten is Gyruss. The 3rd level of Congo Bongo pisses me off! Anyone figure out a good way to consistently handle that one? It's the one with the potholes and charging rhinos. Those stupid rhinos come at you from all different angles

Thanks for the helpful tips everybody

if devilshalo refuses to make up his mind, I'm just going to pick whichever one on his list gets the most votes. So far 1943 (1943 Kai is much much cooler :p ) is in the lead with 1 and Satan's Hollow is trailing with -1

joeblow69

Well, out of that list, I'd pick Mr. Do!

Roto
09-05-04, 02:14 PM
Satan's Hollow: -1
1943: +1
Gaplus: 0
Xevious: 0
Bomberman
Mr. Do: +1
Bump n Jump: 0
Real Ghostbusters: 0

time to try my hand at Congo Bongo again :p

Oh cmon it's not that hard
http://img21.exs.cx/img21/9557/congo.png
You just go up the left side, no coconuts can get to you
Go over the bridge and jump the waterfall
When the monkeys climb on you, jump 3 times and they fall off
Go back to the very left side and wait go to the top when the gorilla is over on the right

The Rhino level.. trick is to lure one rhino all the way to the left. Get over to the left as fast as you can. Once he's over half way there and on the upper half of the field, haul ass back to the right and lure the other rhino out to the right, 1 hop back to the left and you can pretty much walk up to the steps. Couple of things to understand about the rhino level. Make sure you keep your space around you, the tighter it gets, the harder to get out of the situation. And watch when the rhinos go diagonally, sometimes they stop short, sometimes they keep going. Treat them like the barrels in Donkey Kong.

I've been trying all weekend to get to level 5.

I can't get any timing off the Frogger level.

Edit: Frogger level trick.. Level 1 & 2 only.. you can use the hippo on the bottom right. He'll take you to a long jump's distance away from the other side. I think it only works the first time he crosses and comes back.

Level 3 you need to use the island and the fish.

Roto
09-05-04, 05:35 PM
I got the basics down for the other 3 levels, just not those stupid potholes. The best I've been able to do for that is to run right up along the water's edge and jump onto the stairs. If I climb up a rhino always charges me in the ass :grunt:

Oh well, time for football

devilshalo
09-05-04, 05:56 PM
The best is to split the to red horned rhinos. If you can get one lured to the left, you can run back to the right since he can only go up and down. The right side rhino needs to take two charges at you, once as you pass him to the right then one back up... when he charges back up. Just walk on over and up to the stairs.. just remember your spacing. The other rhino is busy trying to make his way back. If you take too much time he'll charge you up the ass.

Also, if you can avoid them for about half the time, there's a lull when it's just the 2 red horned rhinos. That opens up the playing field.

OK, if nobody else is gonna vote, I vote for Mr. Do! Unless someone beats a score in the next 90 minutes it will be:
Mr Do! (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8767)
Nibbler (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8864)
Elevator Action (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7700)

I think this would be the first time that everyone got the high score of the game they picked. Booooooooooooooo! C'mon someone beat one in the last hour!
