That's a tough one but despite the medals won, I'd put El Guerrouj before Phelps because I believe what he accomplished to be harder than what Phelps did. I'd have to think about the other ones but Kelly Holmes is a good choice.

Add to that gramma Birgit Fischer (1 gold, 1 silver) who at 42, won her 8th gold medal in rowing in her 6th Olympic games.

I respect the hell out of what El Guerrouj did, but to say it's harder than what Phelps did is debatable at best. What Phelps did is like El G winning medals at 100, 200, 400, 1500 & 5000.

 Ridiculous comparison. Phelps is a sprinter so what he did is the equivalent on winning the 100 and 200 m on track except that he excels in all (except the breast stroke) styles which is still an amazing achievement. However, there is a world of difference between a 1,500 m. race and a 5,000 m. race and the last time this "double" was achieved was by Pavo Nurmi in 1924. So whether what Phelps did is a greater achievement than what El Guerrouj did is certainly debatable and I have no problem with people picking one over the other. And since it can't be proven either way, I still pick El Guerrouj. :)

Swimming is HEAP difference to athletics in terms of the distances

If you are a great swimmer at one distance, you will be a good swimmer at all distances

Ian Thorpe during his career could be near at the top for the freestyle at every event from 100m to 1500m

In athletics, try getting the 200m guys to run 1500m !

Phelps brilliance at 3 strokes is impressive though

Yes Michael and Hicham are very close, it is entirely debateable

What to me gives the nod to Hicham, is the way he won both races. In the 1500m, he took off on the last lap and held off the kenyan. In the 5000m, he went after someone who took off and he outkicked them. He was the bunny in one race, the hare in the other, but he won both :)

I had a long response typed up and my browser crashed. Suffice to say I disagree.

Bronze Men's 200m Freestyle
Bronze Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay
Gold Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay
Gold Men's 200m Individual Medley
Gold Men's 200m Butterfly
Gold Men's 400m Individual Medley
Gold Men's 100m Butterfly

This is like a track athlete winning bronze in the 400, bronze in the 4x100 relay, and gold in the 4x400 relay, 200, 100, and two hurdles events. Hard to compare the two sports, but it's pretty fair IMO.

I'm not going to name 5, but how can you not put LIU Xiang on top of every list.

Who would have EVER guessed a chinese man would win the 110 meter hurdles? I'd like to see the vegas odds on that.

Well he was third at the 2003 World championships, and one of the men that beat him, Allen Johnson, fell and wasn't in the final. The other hurdler that beat him at Worlds was silver medalist Terrence Trammell (he beat Liu by .03). I'm guessing the odds were actually quite good of him winning

My top 5 athletes:

1. Michael Phelps, USA - no explanation needed
2. Hicham El Guerrouj, Morocco - the 1500/5000 combo was impressive and against top competition
3. Nicolas Massu, Chile - winning men's tennis singles and doubles. Although maybe even more impressive was his teammate Fernando Gonzalez, who won the doubles gold and singles bronze in the same day playing over 7 hours of tennis.
4. Veronica Campbell, Jamacia - winner of women's 200 and 4 x100 relay, as wellas bronze in 100.
5. Carlos Tevez, Argentina. Despite the absence of many of the world's best soccer teams, this guy just dominated the Olympics

Good choices Jericho but I'd pick Kelly Holmes over Veronica Campbell. :)

Carlos Tevez isn't wearing #10 for nothing. Talk about dominating!

1) US Women's Soccer Team
A long time fan, I'm glad the veterans could go out on top.
2) Michael Phelps
He gained my respect initially by his impressive skill, but ultimately my admiration through his humility & selfless actions.
3) US Softball Team
They crushed the competion. 51 runs in 9 games. Allowing the other countries a mere 1 run. Oh my.
4) Misty May & Kerrie Walsh
Just a dominant v-ball powerhouse.
5) *A tie*
Iraqi Men's Soccer Team
Underdogs are always inspiring. Giving hope & pride to their country.
Lauren Williams
Silver metalist in the Women's 50m. Her enthusiasim and positive energy was a breath of fresh air. She was just happy to be in Athens. You may remember her in the relay, she and Marion Jones could not complete the batton pass. Her father was also brought over to Athens by fundraising in her community. He is suffering from a disease, whose name evades me at the moment, in which he received dialosist during the games.
* * * * *
Two of the personalities I most Disliked during the games are: Maurice Greene and all his talk about being the best and fastest man in the world & Svetlana khorkina. Oh my god stop whinning already.

Yeah, Holmes was damn good too, but I'd figure I'd throw one sprinter in there as well as a distance runner (El Guerrouj) just to mix things up. :)

Alexei Tichtchenko (RUS) - Boxing Featherweight
http://us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/rids/20040816/i/r545495546.jpg
Won by a TKO over Shahin Imranov. He was behind in points when an inadvertant headbutt caused a gash over Imranov's right eye. Ref stopped the fight. He knew he got very lucky and advanced, next beating the World Champion Galib Jafarov and eventually going on to win gold.

Taufik Hidayat (IND) - Badminton
http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20040821/capt.olybad20908211505.greece_olympic_badminton__olybad209.jpg
Top seeded 4 years ago, came to the Olympics 11th in the world. Was actually banned from the sport for 3 years, but he cleaned up his act. His win reminded me of Agassi's first Wimbeldon win.

Chinese Women's Team (CHN) - Indoor volleyball
http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20040828/capt.olyvbl11908282035.greece_olympics_volleyball_olyvbl119.jpg
Unbelievable. Going unbeaten in their pool only to find themselves down 2 - 0 in the gold medal match. Kun Feng was masterful running the Chinese attack. Her sets were incredible and it kept the Chinese in the matches.

Jeremey Wariner (USA) - 400M
http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20040821/capt.olyrun15808211903.greece_olympics_athletics_olyrun158.jpg
This guy just made it look too easy. His form is even better than his idol, Michael Johnson. What a mind game to see him cruise thru the qualifiers. This guy has ice in his veins. Amazing and he's only 20.

US Men's Eight Boat (USA) - Rowing

40 years without a gold medal. Starting out strong they never gave up the lead.

#1) Allen Iverson, for the leadership and passion he showed, despite most people cheering against the U.S. He said all the right things, and was gracious in defeat. U.S. A. Basketball (the association) didnt do a great job of adding the final pieces necessary (ie shooters), and he did what he had to do. He was the best and most consistent player on the team. Timmy D woulda been if he wasn't targetted by the bad refs.

#2) That one guy on the men's gymnastic high bar, i think from Russia, ALeksei?, who went and did THE MOST EXCITING high bar routine I've ever seen and then got a ridiculously low score. The crowd in the stadium booed for 15 minutes straight!!! The judges were then forced to change the score, which didnt do much in the end. Then Paul Hamm's turn was up and the crowd still didnt die down with the boos so the russian guy got up and blew kisses to the crowd while motioning for them to settle down. Unprecidented stuff.

#3) Brazilian guy Lima in the men's marathon. Got jumped, pushed to the side, and then pulled to the ground by a lunatic "priest", and finished the race BLOWING KISSES to the crowd. Gangsta.

#4) Ai-chan for Japan's women's single table tennis team. She eventually lost to the south korean, but I've followed her game and seen the docs on her while i was in Japan starting when she was 3. She just lays it out there on the floor and wants to win. She's just a kid too so its great to see.

#5) Shawn Crawford, men's sprint. I just like him cause he goes all out and because his goal in his career is to outrun a zebra.
