Given as how a VT defense (which lost people) gave up 30+ pts in 4 of their last 5 of 2003 and how a USC offense scored 40+ in 7 of their last 8, I don't think USC will have a problem hanging 35 on these guys (even without Williams). I really think the game will be closer than what everyone thinks..Although I think they will do fine without Williams, the whole controversy may lead to a let down, and Leinart (sp) still has a sore elbow...Of course I thought Auburn would beat SC last year, and that didnt go as I thought..

the thing that irks me about the begining of the college football season is those damn preseason polls. Why do they even have them? I think it unfairly puts teams behind each other before games are even played. Like, say a low ranked or unranked team plays great they have to do so much to overtake higher teams. Why not start the AP and ESPN polls later in the season kind of like the BCS rankings are?

I'm not sure it would make much of a difference, quite frankly. I'd expect most, if not all, voters to do their own rankings pre-season, and then just manipulate those as things went around until the first official "poll" came out.

I know its not going to be perfect but I think delaying the poll will be somewhat more accurate. Take USC for example obviously before the poll comes out, say in the 6th week, people are still going to consider them number 1, but I think overall delaying the polls is a good idea especially since they have a bigger impact on the BCS this year

although its early, and you dont know how freshman will progress, but it seems like USC is going to be tripped up along the way. They have an easy Pac 10 schedule and avoid Oregon, but I think playing against Cal and going to Oregon State might be hard games

For my purposes, VT's defense was better than I thought it would be. I had the VT offense pegged - around 14 pts. I didn't expect such a young defensive group to hold USC to 24 pts.

Ah, the thread revisit.
I got to the stadium parking lot around 2pm. We tailed-gated until game time and thoroughly enjoyed the game.
Overall, I think VT played well. They held USC from doing any major offensive damage until mid 4th quarter. When a team can prevent one of the top offenses in the nation from scoring, you know you are doing something right.
Our offense just didn't get in gear. It was a combination of good plays, followed by bad plays. Nothing really clicked, but they kept driving. I do find it funny how someone said "I hope this don't turn the game around" after that offensive pass interference call. That is exactly what happened.
I am usually not happy with a loss, but VT showed a whole lot when they weren't even supposed to make it a game. If we can hold a good team down with sloppy play, we should be able to smoke them when we finally get going. What a great start to the college football season.
Next stop: Back to Blacksburg next weekend for the home opener.
