It's been released today, and there are some highly anticipated films being shown this year:

I've got a pair of tickets. These are a few of the films that interest me:

L' Intrus (Claire Denis)
Undertow (David Gordon Green)

I would avoid Bad Education, Sideways, Silver City, and I (Heart) Huckabees because they will soon get a normal theatrical release.

Also avoid HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS like the plague. It is just bad. And STEAMBOY was quite disappointing as well.

You should go for L'INTRUS (Denis) and NOTRE MUSIQUE (Godard), as these two films may be hard to find in distribution later. EROS is also very, very highly recommended, though distribution of it is likely.

And how hard is it for a normal person to get tickets to some of those 6 or 8 big deal movies?

just ordered the film festival programme online, they are the only North American film festival that truly publish and sell a programme worthy of adding (and easily obtainable) to any film connoisuers library.

I'm too lazy to type out the procedure again, but here's basically how it works (quoting myself from an earlier thread):


"You buy a book of ticket "coupons" and when you choose what films you want to see, there is a lottery, if demand exceeds supply (so no guarantee to see a particular film). Or you can go to the box office the day of the film showing and if there are any tickets still available, you can buy them (in the case of high profile films like DAGGERS, it would be unlikely). For the sold out films, there is also a standby line you can wait in, for a chance to buy a ticket if someone doesn't show up (worth a shot, I guess). This year for the first time, you are able to buy individual tickets online for a specific film, but this doesn't take place until the day before the festival opens, so people who bought the books of tickets earlier have already had first shot.

It's too bad that tickets for individual films aren't just initially made available on a first come, first serve basis (the Tokyo International Film Festival works this way, and I had no problem getting tickets to individual films there last year. It worked out great). I guess the TIFF feels it can make more money doing things this way. I'm going to take a shot and try to order individual tickets the day before the festival."

Most single tickets are $16.75 CDN. Prices of books of tickets vary .

There is A LOT of films that look interesting to me this year, but narrowing it down, I'm going to try to get tickets for:

Hope I can actually get to see some of these.

Quite a nice lineup of films - some from some of the biggest names in international cinema and quite a few directors that probably never had a film come out in any format in the US. Just the right mix for a good film festival.

BTW, as a little unofficial prelude to the festival, this upcoming Sunday, Alexandro Jodorowsky will be showing two of his films, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN and SANTA SANGRE at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto, complete with talks before and after the films. (it's a part of the Rue Morgue horror convention this weekend).
