Interesting Pirates news...

Pittsburgh starter John Van Benschoten hit a two-run homer for his first big league hit, but the Pirates lost their fifth straight.

....

Van Benschoten, recalled from Triple-A Nashville earlier in the day to make his second career start, allowed four runs -- one earned -- and six hits over the first three innings. He settled down to retire 13 straight before Danny Bautista's seventh-inning single and finished with four strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

The Dodgers will probably re-sign him. It would be a lot cheaper if he did not win the MVP (Gone Yeah not winning the Cy Young this year lowers his value slightly also). Bell Tray shares the same agent as Gone Yeah, Dry Fart, and Bell Tron and the Dodgers will probably want a package deal for them all (not Dry Fart of course, since he will still be under contract). It may not mean anything when it comes to contract negotiations, but Bell Tray loves being on the Dodgers.

So I saw this on prosportsdaily.com today:

Burnitz has gone into his worst slump of the season, and the club and the player have been unable to find compromise on a contract, leaving the lingering possibility that he could be involved in a waiver-wire deal over the next week.

And I think, yeah, he hasn't done shit for my fantasy team lately. So I benched him today. -rolleyes-

The Cubs are up 12-4 in the middle of the seventh, and they are in a rain delay. Why don't they just call the dam game, it's not like the potent brewer offense is going to score 9 runs in 2 innings.

But thumbs up to the Marlins winning, once they are done with the Giants they can't start losing though.

Padres get Brian Giles

Pirates get Jason Bay and Oliver Perez

Fair enough...I thought you were purposely comparing Sammy because of that. ;) Personally Sammy should have received much more than he did because I never once thought he picked the wrong bat.

The only reason, for me at least, it that its' hard to comparesince he is a reliever. I think he is used for about an inning or so every other day or maybe just a little more - tough to really tell. I would also think Brett thinks the suspension is unfair.

http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/gamecenter/recap/MLB_20040819_PIT@STL

Oliver Perez had 10 strikeouts and allowed only an unearned run in seven innings for the Pirates...

Perez struck out Larry Walker all three times. He reached double figures in strikeouts for the eighth time this season and 13th time in his career, and walked only two.

The Pirates played the game under protest after Perez was cited for an illegal pitch in the second. Plate umpire Joe West said Perez altered his motion on a 3-2 pitch to Sanders that appeared to be over the middle of the plate.

"The umpire told me I stopped my delivery," Perez said. "I didn't know what I did. I was able to put it out of my mind."

Crazy stuff.

Where do I find out his contract status? How many years does he have left in Pittsburgh?
