When your team is out of the playoffs, what do you do?
When the Cubbies took the Division last year, and the Division series, not much was said....there was even grudging respect for the 2003 Cubs.
In the NLCS though, people down here pulled a Jekyll and Hyde. They started eating only fish, in order to help the Marlins....buying Florida memorabilia, replaying every good play the Marlins made on their Laptops at school and a host of other annoying behavior, cheering on Florida in every bar that I went into, and chanting Go Fish! Go Fish, ect.
To me, you root FOR your team, and if they're toast, they're toast, and you watch baseball with somewhat detached indifference...after all, your boys are out and can have no further impact....so why not relax a little and just enjoy baseball with a lack of nerve-wracking hopes for your team who is already out of it.
So....why do people take up the standard of another team, just to see them defeat a rival when their team is already out of it?
Of course, sit at home and smile with pleasure as your hated rivals get beaten, but to adopt another team and pretend like you're their fan seems a little over the top and foolish to me....and last year especially, even more silly to root against the Cubs if you're a White Sox fan, considering the deplorable baseball in Chicago for the last...say....98 years! Hell, if the Cubbies were out of it this year, I'd like to see the White Sox win it...it'd be good for the city....and if the Cards don't make it out of the DS, I'll chuckle at home about it, but I'm not about to go out and buy a Braves/Dodgers jersey, and walk into a Cardinals bar down here and shout and scream for Atlanta or LA SF or SD. It just won't matter too much to me....just as I don't root against the Cards now...they've got the Division pretty much locked up, and watching them win games causes me to shake my head, but that's about it.
So...are you an "Opponent Hater" or do you just love your own team?
B.A.

I try not to be an opponent hater, but more often that not I end up cheering for whoever is playing against: the Dallas Cowboys; St. Louis Rams; New York Yankees; North Carolina TarHeels; Indiana Hoosiers; Kansas Jayhawks; Detroit RedWings; Kobe's Lakers.
Last year, I was going to root for the Cubs if they made it to the series as long as they weren't playing the Twins or the BoSox.

6 of the 7 on my list are top rivals of my favorite teams (Terps, Skins, O's), so it is only natural to hate those teams. The 7th? Well, let's just say I have nothing against classy organizations. Now unnecessarily overexposed classy organizations that are full of themselves, well that's another matter. :)

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I bet on Kansas vs Syracuse 2 years ago. Morons couldn't hit foul shots for the life of them. Of course, I should have known better given the number of the titles the Big 12 has won in hoops since 1988.
On the flip side I bet on OU vs FSU in the National Title game in 2000.
I don't root one way or the other on the Big 12. It is easy to ignore, well unless someone claims that it is the best conference in football or basketball. ;)

I love my teams. I actively dislike some teams, primarily based upon a division rivalry, and some other factors in some cases. My dislike for the Rams, for instance, diminished considerably when they left the Saints' division. During last year's WS, I was too pooped to care, but I certainly wanted to see the Yankees lose. The Marlins winning wasn't something I was interested in beyond it being a nice baseball story.
No offense to present company, but the dislike among some for the Cubs last season, and this one, to a certain extent, has to be based at least partially on Cubs fans that we may know. Overall, I don't find them to be an easy lot to live with. At least with Red Sox fans, there is an underlying sense of defeatism that trumps any arrogance or overreaching confidence. I've found that watching a game with Cubs fans is an exercise in patience. In fact, any dislike for the Cubs that I have has come far less from the fact that they share a division with one of my teams than it should. On the other hand, I find that I like the Cardinals more than I should based upon their fans, although certain folks are certainly doing their best to change this.
As far as the Yankees, they just have the worst of all worlds. Unfortunately, I like most of the Yanks fans around here. :( It doesn't shake my dislike for the team though.

NBA: Lakers, Knicks, Heat
MLB: Yankees, Mets, Cardinals
NFL: Broncos, Chiefs
College Football: Pitt, Syracuse, VT, Notre Dame, Penn St., Miami, FSU, Texas, Nebraska, Maryland
College B-ball: Duke, NC, Georgetown
Most are rivals of my teams (Magic, Braves, Raidres, WVU) the others are just teams I hate because my dad hated them when I was growing up.

I have to admit, I have my teams I hate. Mainly they are The Yankees and The Lakers, because well Im a Red Sox and Celtic fan. I would also put the Hurricanes and Gators in there as well (for different reasons). The Hurricanes because they are FSU's biggest rival and have spoiled more seasons than I care to count, and the Gators, because they whine more than any other college football team out there.

Call it "sports masochism" but I tend to like underdog teams more. I don't hate succesful teams, I just don't care for them much.
For example, in the 80's I was a Jets fan, but all my friends idolized the Niners. Can't blame them but for me it was too easy for them to jump on the Niner bandwagon "just because" they were winning. Now if you liked the Niners for awhile and remained faithful, that's different.
Anyway, it's a weird logic...
I remember one episode where HATE was the main factor. At 10 years old, me and my friends used to play street hockey. All of us (being from Montreal, and that was in the 70's) wore Montreal Canadiens jerseys.
Here comes this new kid with a Toronto Maple Leafs (why Leafs... It should be Leaves  ) jersey and we beat the crap out of him -ohbfrank-
Its less hardcore now but then hockey was bigger than religion and sliced bread. I feel bad now when I think of that poor kid who was probably a good guy but got beaten up because his mom bought the wrong jersey

I believe in the flipside of the rooting interest. Why must I only root for my team and not root against another? I prefer to root my team on to victory, but that does not occur very often. My town is a sports shitcan (second only to Cleveland), so what's wrong with me hoping that someone in that more successful town feels a little worse than me that day?
Teams I used to hate (because they were/are successful or caused me some sort of personal anguish) but now like or feel indifferent toward:
New York Yankees - My hatred was mostly about jealousy. I got over that and now root for them because I never want the Red Sox to win anything. Ever.
Dallas Cowboys - For some reason, I really got steamed that Madden and Summerall became their personal announcing crew for a few years there. The team fell on hard times and no longer garner so much attention, so I don't really mind them anymore.
Utah Jazz - My hate was completely connected to Stockon, Malone and Hornacek. Now that they're gone, I don't give a hoot about the Jazz.
Duke Blue Devils Basketball - I think the only reason why I hated them was because I liked UNLV back in the early '90s and Duke stood in the way. That, and Christian Laettner was a total wank. Now I root for them to do well because I respect the school and most of the players.
Teams I currently hate:
Boston Red Sox - I wanted this team to get to the World Series last year. Recently, I started to finally notice how whiny and oblivious their fans are (sorry guys :)). I just can't feel sorry for them anymore.
Oakland Raiders - This is some sort of innate blood feud kind of hate without any real reasoning behind it. I root for them to be 8-8 every year.
There are other teams that I hate, but I don't hate them enough to mention them. Although, since I have been watching the Olympics lately, I can't help but start to hate Team Russia. They can't seem to lose anything now without protesting the results. This, in additon to their "I'll take my ball and go home" attitude at the 2002 Winter Games makes me feel like they're a good team to hate.

I wasn't going to post, but seeing as there's two too many Giants fans on this page, I had to balance things out.
As a Dodgers fan I will always hate the Giants. The fact that the Giants lost to "the other L.A. team" a few years back was classic. I loved every single minute of it, rally monkey and all. To this day, anytime I get into it with a Giants fan I know that at any point in time I can always fall back on the old "well at least I was alive to witness my Dodgers win a championship" line. Works every time too! :D
I also hate the Braves with a passion. First of all, how the hell the Braves remained in the WESTERN DIVISION of the National League is beyond me. I mean, com'on now, pick the one that doesn't fit: Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Braves? Tough one.
Every year I would watch the Braves beat out my Dodgers for the Division Crown for a division they had no right to be in. Then they'd beat every other NL team only to lose in the World Series. Being a NL fan, this only fueled my hatred for them. The way I saw it, if they were going to lose every year, they could at least let another NL team make it to the World Series and lose.

I don't really hate TEAMS, but I can certainly hate individual players on teams.

Ok...here's another one for you:
I HATE what the Yankees REPRESENT. IMO, they trot out everything that's bad about baseball today- a mercenary system with an owner who is allowed to just flat out-buy you. I do glean some pleasure however, by seeing their high powered offense get mowed down by National League pitching time and time again...just like it's going to happen this year :D
But I don't hate the Yankees as a franchise.
BTW-
Why so much hatred for Notre Dame?
(Especially the way they've played in the 90s and 00s...)
