The Stand
Also way back when the movies were new I got the book adaptions of Aliens and the Terminator.
I'm not much of a book reader anymore. I read enough on the net :p

Both Forrest Gump and Princess Bride inspired me to read the books they were based off of. In both examples, it is one of the few times I've enjoyed the film 100% more than it's print source.

Same reason here. I trust the rule that says the book is probably better than the movie is going to be.

I usually read the book before the films are released but a couple got passed me:
Lord of the Rings trilogy + The Hobbit
Jurassic Park
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
I plan to find the story Secret Window was based on just to see if it was a poor adaptation or the source material was bad to begin with.

These inspired me to read the books:
LOTR and The Hobbit
The Princess Bride
These I saw before the movie, but I don't recall if one perticular movie inspired me to check out the author:
Several Crichton - Jurassic Park, Andrameda Strain, maybe Congo. I read several before they were movies.
The Frim. Maybe some other Grisham- A Time To Kill, The Client. I can't recall If I saw them before or after the movie.
The Hunt for Red October, Clear and Present Danger. I didn't see Patriot Games until after I read the book.
Cujo, Carrie, Christine, The Shining, The Running Man, Stand By Me/The Body. I have read almost all of King's significant publications before 1992. Though I didn't start reading him until 1989 so I saw many as movies first.

surprisingly, Battlefield Earth, that movie was so bad, that I thought that the book must have been good, if people were willing to throw that much money at it. and i wasn't wrong. it was a great book! too bad the movie was that bad.

It was a novelization in which Orson Scott Card was given the treatment notes and allowed to embellish upon Cameron's ideas.

The only movie to ever make me go read the book afterwards was "Jurassic Park".
I saw "The Time Machine" (the orginal movie) years before actually reading the book....But I read the book more because i wanted to read another book by H.G. Wells than because of the movie.

Read book after seeing movie:
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Eyes Wide Shut (Traumnovelle)
a part of Naked Lunch (besides being difficult to get through I also realized that the movie is more of an adaptation of Burroughs than his book)
Wanted to see movie, knew there was a book, and then read book before seeing the adaptation:
Lolita
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
In Cold Blood

Jurassic Park. I loved Dinosaurs, so, since the film wouldn't be out for a while, I read the book.
I was disappointed with the changes and omissions, but I enjoy both. I fondly remember telling other kids (the loudmouth ones who bragged about seeing it before ANYONE else, or the most times) all the best bits from the book.
"Yes, TWO Tyrranosaurs! And John Hammond meets one!"
