DVD Recorder w/hard drive vs. TiVO

I do not really know or have ever used either a DVD recorder or TiVO before, but if I have a DVD recorder with a 160gb hard drive, is it like having TiVO? Are the advantages of TiVO a lot greater than simply recording something into a drive? Or should I have both the TiVO and DVD recorder to record off TiVO's drive onto DVD? Thanks for the help!

Yes.

I have both though not in the same theater setup. Think of the dvd recorder as a glorified vcr. The TIVO even for the $4.99 I pay each month looks for things to record, finds shows I want (more importantly that my wife wants) and then lets me record them off to a vcr if I wish.

TIVO is awesome.

That's the DirecTV monthly charge for TiVo.
