Elmer Bernstein, 1922-2004

Elmer Bernstein, the amazingly prolific composer who wrote the memorable theme for The Magnificent Seven among other scores, died Wednesday in his sleep at his home in Ojai, California; he was 82.

We've really been losing the giants of film music in the past year - Michael Kamen, Jerry Goldsmith, David Raksin, Elmer Bernstein... very sad.

My favorite Bernstein score is definitely To Kill a Mockingbird.

They are going to have a lot of tributes for these legends that have died so far at next year's Oscars.

His score for To Kill a Mockingbird makes me a bit watery-eyed, and his 70's/80's comedy scores (Animal House, An American Werewolf in London, Heavy Metal) are just awesome.

I always associate Elmer Bernstein with the early John Landis/John Belushi/Dan Aykroyd films.
