Can anything kill Napoleon Dynamite? For a film that hasn't even been on 600 screens (yet), it's still doing pretty damn good. Especially for a film with a $400,000 budget and little publicity.
It's a disgrace that AVP is number one at the box office, but then again, the box office has no account for taste.
I'm shocked that both Princess Diaries 2 and Yu-gi-oh made what they did. I haven't seen any publicity for either film, but I guess familes want something they could take their kids to this weekend.
I thought Collateral wouldn't drop as much as it did as I thought it would have some legs. I was expecting a 35-40% drop, not a 50% drop.
At the rate it's dropping, The Village will barely slide plass the $100 million mark.
And Harold and Kumar is officially dead and will probably be out of all theaters by next week.

I'm thrilled that AvP made so much. I know most people hate the movie, but I for one enjoyed it. I could care less what people think of me after saying that.
I really had a great time watching it. Go Paul Anderson! (Okay, I added that last sentence in just to piss people off!).
I don't hate Anderson. In fact, I really enjoyed Resident Evil, and slightly enjoyed Event Horizon. Visually, all his movies look great. They may not be the strongest on script (which is VERY important to me, but for some reason it doesn't bother me in his movies!), but I still enjoy them. I'll be getting AvP on dvd when it comes out.

"little publicity"??? Searchlight bent over backwards to get the college crowd into those early screenings. Plus the whole MTV angle... They didn't just cross their fingers and put this out, trust me.
But if you think they only pumped 400K into the film, I have oceanside property in Arizona to sell you. A profitable film, for sure, but there was much more money spent in the end than what Box Office Mojo is reporting.

no kidding, the marketing on it has been wild. I wouldn't say it is as much as AVP but fox has indeed been pumping a lot of cash into the marketing of it with radio and tv spots.

Did anybody notice that AvP dropped 25% Saturday and another 28% Sunday? When a movie drops 25% "after" its opening Friday, you know word of mouth is rotten. I see a 60% + drop next weekend.

For an R rated Tom Cruise thriller that takes place half the time in a single cab, the 100 million dollar gross is not only excellent, but another sign of how strong a pull Cruise is. Not only that, but it's on its way to becoming Michael Mann's top grossing pic ever.

Considering cruise's films don't have strong openings of 50+ (besides M:I status) it is playing well with a nice low % drop from last week. It's going to stick around. that and it's great word of mouht makes this a success. Remember, it wasn't much to make since it was shot on Digital.

As for Yu-Gi-Oh, if you don't watch afternoon cartoons or Saturday morning cartoons (especially on WB) you wouldn't have seen much publicity. If you had watched them you would see it being publicized pretty well. However, Yu-Gi-Oh is the highest rated kids show on network television (there are some on Nickelodeon that rate higher) so there is a built-in audience that want to see the movie.
