Fanny & Alexander - Criterion Collection Info!

this is not from Criterion, but from the Swedish Film Institute which certainly is a better source than most. the article was originally in Swedish, but i've translated it as best as i could.

Criterion to release Fanny & Alexander

The respected distributor Criterion will release a lavish Fanny & Alexander-DVD this fall with newly produced bonus material.

Criterion is the American distributor of a large number of Bergman films and their DVD releases are known all over the world for their bonus materials and high technical quality. In Sweden some critics have compared the American DVD releases to the locally released ones, which sadly hasn't been favorable for the Swedish editions.

a year ago, Criterion acquired the American rights to Fanny & Alexander, which after twenty years had a re-release at the Film Forum theater in New York this past May. Criterion are now preparing a DVD release of the film which will include the theatrical version as well as the tv-version and Dokument Fanny & Alexander (documentary), in addition to new bonus materials in the form of interviews. Johanna Schiller, DVD producer for Criterion, visited Sweden last fall and interview amongst others Erland Josephson and Jörn Donner. This July she returned to interview Anna Asp, Katinka Faragó, Ewa Fröling and Pernilla August.

The Swedish Film Institute's archive has on Criterion's request delivered a total of 64 rolls of masters and rougly 40 rolls of final mixes of the theatrical and television versions, a teaser and a documentary. A technician with Criterion followed the transfer to HD-material all week at Frithiof Film to Video. On Friday, July 2nd, Johanna Schiller visited the Film Institute's technic and costumes storage in Bro where she along with a photographer shot Anna Asp's scenography models for Fanny & Alexander (see picture above) and a selection of Marik Vo's costumes for the film.

Criterion's Fanny & Alexander is preliminarily scheduled for a November release. More information on Criterion can be found at www.criterionco.com.

Interesting. Too bad I didn't guess that movie in the 'Guess the November Releases' thread at the Criterion forum.

Absolutely great - thanks for the news! I've been tempted to import this, but a Criterion edition is worth waiting for!

I'm glad I got the region2 a few months ago, but I'll double up for a loaded Criterion.

Terrific! I've only seen the film version but that blew me away. It's amazingly warm yet genuine, heartfelt yet honest. For those who are on the fence about this one... trust me.

you knew that Criterion would have to at some point release this, since alot of Bergman has only been released on DVD through Criterion. And since they wonderfully included the miniseries cut of 'Scenes from a Marriage' to not do this for "Fanny and Alexander" would be inexcusible. The retrospective of Bergman's films at the Film Forum in NYC and Washington DC (AFI, Women in the Arts museum, National Gallery of Art) this year has been extensive and exhausting, many films of his which I have just seen for the first time. Now I just need a second job to fiance purchasing all the Criteion editions.

From www.criterionco.com :

Two Releases of Fanny and Alexander Coming This Fall

The Criterion Collection is currently working on two separate editions of the Ingmar Bergman masterpiece Fanny and Alexander. The theatrical edition ($29.95) presents the Academy Award-winning 188-minute version of the film in a two-disc set with audio commentary by film scholar Peter Cowie, a collection of introductions by Bergman to eleven of his films, and an assortment of trailers. The special-edition five-disc boxed set ($59.95) includes the complete contents of the theatrical edition as well as the five-hour director’s cut of the film, Bergman’s own feature-length documentary The Making of Fanny and Alexander, a new 40-minute video of exclusive interviews with cast and crew, and Ingmar Bergman Bids Farewell to Film—a one-hour filmed interview with the famed director. Look for both editions of Fanny and Alexander in November!
Great news for all Criterion and Bergman fans.
