Pat Roach: "Indiana Jones" star dies

SHOWBIZ stars packed a parish church yesterday to say Auf Wiedersehen Pat to TV's best-loved big guy.

All the stars of the hit comedy, in which 6ft 4ins Pat Roach starred as Bomber, flew back from filming in Thailand to bid him their final farewell.

Too ill to join them abroad, the former champion wrestler lost his final brave bout against throat cancer two weeks ago at the age of 61.

A close friend said: "They never got a proper chance to say goodbye and were devastated.

"Pat was such a popular man and real gentleman and that shows from the people here today.

"The cast from Auf Wiedersehen Pet have turned up today to say their goodbyes". In an emotional tribute Jimmy Nail, Oz in the show, sang Danny Boy at Pat's grave after the packed private service at St. John the Baptist church, Bromsgrove, Worcester.

The hearse was followed to the church by Pat's friends, his wife Doreen and son Mark, 45, daughter-in-law Dianne, 45, and grandson Patrick, 14.

Pat's coffin was borne inside by his wrestling friends. Pallbearers included world champion bodybuilder Sarah Bridges. In the hour that followed Tim Healy (Dennis) paid a deep personal tribute and Kevin Whateley (Neville) read out Pat's favourite poem, Kipling's If.

Pat was a mainstay of the comedy drama about the lives of the group of grafting builders.

But he was also a film star who counted Steven Spielberg and Arnold Schwarzenegger among his friends. Harrison Ford, who worked with him on the Indiana Jones films, phoned Pat's family to express his sorrow.

Pat first found fame as a wrestler, rising through the ranks to become British and European heavyweight champion.

His acting break came from cult movie director Stanley Kubrick, who cast him alongside Ryan O'Neal and Steven Berkoff in Barry Lyndon.

He gained parts in a string of blockbuster movies but became a household name after he joined the original Auf Wiedersehen line-up for the first series in 1983.
*****************************************

Haven't seen this posted anywhere else but he's the only other person besides Harrison Ford to have been in all 3 Indiana Jones movies.

I think he was the big Nazi that had a fight with Indy while the plane was rotating around and got chopped up by the propellers

He was also the big, bearded Thuggee who got crushed in the stone mill in Indy 2... and i believe he also beat the crap out of Sean Connery in "Never Say Never Again"

He was also in - or at least was going to be - in Last Crusade until the scene he was in was cut. He was also the big tibetan that Indy was fighting with when Tohlt goes "Shoot them, shoot them both."

Damn, that sucks. I was so hoping for him to be in part 4 so Indy could kick his ass yet again.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention this.

This and Anthony Anderson's rape charge hasn't received much attention here.

He actually was in Last Crusade, very briefly. When Vogel (the balder Nazi) is running to the blimp to check out the passengers inside (just before the "no ticket" scene), the man running with him is Roach.

Ah, to land your first speaking movie role, only to end up getting thrashed by Ryan O'Neal . . .

Oh - right. I'd forgotten about that. There was, however, a much larger scene on the blimb. As I understand it, it was suppose to be as Indy and Henry are heading for the plane to escape. Indy and Pat get into a fight in the superstructure of the blimp and Pat gets pushed out.

I dont know if the scene was actually shot tho.

You know - I ALWAYS thought there had to be something missing in that blimp scene. I mean, why go through all the trouble plotwise of getting Indy on a blimp, but then nothing happens?

I never said "THE" star. I said he was a star.

Sorry but that's what he's best known for.

I was hoping that the cut scene would wind up on the boxed set. Well, as we all know sadly this scene didnt.

Perhaps for the 20 anniversery edition.
