"Van Helsing" writer-director Stephen Sommers and his producing partner Bob Ducsay have landed the rights to Flash Gordon, and will adapt a feature film based on the iconic comic book superhero for Universal.
Sommers, creator of such hits as "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," is producing the Flash project with an eye toward scripting; Sommers has yet to helm a project he hasn't scripted.
"Flash Gordon" dates back to 1934, when it was created by famed comic strip artist Alex Raymond, and for decades after appeared in movie serials, animated fare, TV shows and a 1980 feature helmed by Mike Hodges ("Croupier").
Property is controlled by the Hearst Corp.'s King Features Syndicate, and its liaison to Hollywood, Rick Karo, will produce along with Sommers and Ducsay.
Deal also packs good news for classic comics fans, as the legendary intergalactic adventurer, his female companion Dale Arden and scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov will again appear in comic books. This time, the series will be distribbed by the nation's third largest comic book company, Top Cow, whose film topper Spike Selden will exec produce with former Davis Entertainment exec Adam Coplan. Sommers is expected to serve as a creative consultant on the new series of comic books, according to insiders.
The 1980 "Flash Gordon" pic, produced by Dino De Laurentiis and starring Max von Sydow as Flash Gordon nemesis Ming the Merciless, was also released by U.
The Sommers Co., which has a first-look term deal with U, recently optioned the rights to Sarah Dunn's romantic adventure novel "The Big Love." However, that pic is something Sommers is interested in producing only, at least as of now.
Since opening last May, U's $200 million-budgeted Sommers tentpole "Van Helsing" has grossed $269 million worldwide and is expected to narrowly break even for the studio.
"Flash's" progress to production will be overseen by U vice chairman Scott Stuber and VP of production Dylan Clark.

I may regret admitting this, but Deep Rising is one of my favorite B-movies, and I liked The Mummy quite a bit. Although his latest efforts have been pretty bad I still have hope.
They have to at least work the Queen theme song in somewhere.

I'm sure we'll hear a lot of Sommers bashing, but it sounds good to me. Was dissapointed by Van Helsing but it was still entertaining, as was both Mummy movies.

This just might be the type of movie that Stephen Sommers could excel with. Give him a decent script and a sizable budget and I have faith he could turn out a really good Flash Gordon movie. Then again, so could most directors...

I never understood the need to remake movies that were perfect in the first place.

Oh well - that could have been a good movie too (or at least a fun movie - the 1980 version was no great work of art, but it was camp fun).
And no - this isnt unfounded bashing. One good movie and a TON of shit ones is not unfounded bashing. It's an educated guess.

Though it's true Sommers will PROBABLY direct, he hasn't committed to directing... he's writing and producing, but he hasn't said wether he'd direct it or not at this point.

Van Helsing cost $200 million? I thought it was more in the neighborhood of $150 million. Oh well.
If Sommers keeps himself in the mold of the two mummy movies and the first half of Van Helsing, it could be very decent. I just can't picture a Flash Gordon movie without the Queen music blaring though. IMO, the 1980 version is one in which the music MADE the movie. Without it, the film would have truly been lackluster (not that it wasn't already, the music raised it about 75%).

Why not remake "Flash Gordon"?
I was just watching this and while not a good movie in many respects, it has a good, almost epic story line that I think with today's technology and special effects could be made into something spectacular.
I mean a space adventure with a human saving the earth from a variety of alien races and one supreme dictator. A story like that screams to be retold in grand form.
So why hasn't someone jumped?
