Any chance of a new Ghost in the Shell DVD?

Since the sequel is being released in the U.S. soon, any possibility of a new edition of Ghost in the Shell? I'm hesitant to pick up the current release because of the lack of a 5.1 Japanese track, so that would be great if a new edition was released that included one.

Haven't heard anything of a new edition, but I'm hoping they do.

Manga is known for not doing a good job their releases, so a rerelease is unlikely...

Manga had been talking about doing a remastered GITS DVD for a while now. It got put on hold because of the Anchor Bay buyout.

Interestingly Amazon.com has this product listing.

Apparently, Dreamworks has licensed Ghost In The Shell: Innocence, a sequel of Ghost In The Shell movie.

MANGA is pretty low budget when it comes to all things. So I doubt it.

I have noticed that the original DVD has become somewhat hard to find. I don't remember reading anything about it going out of print. But I do know that DDD did not have a listing for it at the time of the recent sale and I haven't seen a copy at any of the Best Buys I frequent (when all of them used to have multiple copies for the last few months).

Are there any releases of this movie in any region with a Japanese 5.1 track and English subtitles?

The CDJapan site says Dolby Digital Surround, but YesAsia say that the Japanese language track is 2.0 DD. It's also listed as 2.0 at DVDAsian.

Amazon has the Ghost in the Shell Sonic Edition up for pre-order. This might be a new edition? It doesn't look like a TV release.

No it isn't the TV series. What is interesting is that it is listed at 120 min. run time. The original Ghost in the Shell was listed as 115 min. run time.

I have a Japanese Dolby Digital Experience laserdisc test disc with a DD5.1 trailer for this movie. It sounds great. I couldn't believe it when I bought the DVD and it didn't have a Japanese 5.1 track. Very disappointing.

Their listing says the studio is Anchor Bay. This leads me to suspect that it is some kind of compilation of episodes from the Stand Alone Complex TV series. Anchor Bay has the rights to the TV show, but the movie is licensed to Manga Entertainment.

Since Anchor Bay now owns Manga (and Amazon would still list the movie as Manga for the studio for the original release), I don't think that is an accurate guess.

It wouldn't be called just "Ghost in the Shell", the series is entitled "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex". By the release date they have set their will only be 2 discs worth of GitS:SAC released, highly unlikely for a comp of episodes then.

I am betting it is a remastered edition of the movie. It makes sense that it would be that.

I agree. And now that Anchor Bay owns Manga, and GITS was Manga's biggest title, we can probably expect a zillion different DVD releases of the film. It might be their anime equivelent to ARMY OF DARKNESS.

Wasn't there a hentai derivative/knock-off of GiTS? Never actually saw it, just seem to remember seeing a listing for it somewhere and looking up the details on some review site.

I'm pretty sure a new GITS1 DVD will be put out about the same time GITS2 is released...

You're right. I'd forgotten about that merger. Hmmm...

I hope so too. But GITS1 is Manga/Anchor Bay's and GITS2 has apparently been licensed by Dreamworks.

Is the current one at least 16x9? There was a used one at the local shop a few weeks ago. I've been wanting to grab this type.

Yes, the current one is anamorphic, or at least the back of the box says so. I watched it myself about a month ago to prep for the SAC release and although I can't remember putting my display in anamorphic mode (have to do it manually), I do remember thinking that the transfer was really crappy. If you can get the used one for around $7 or less, it is probably worth it, otherwise I'd wait it out.
