I am going to buy a DVR and I need to know what is the best one to buy at $500-$600?
Thanks.

ReplayTV 50xx or 55xx (if you can't find a 50xx). Others will certainly say Tivo. If you happen to have DirecTV, DirecTivo is probably your best option (but it ONLY works with DirecTV, nothing else). I could go on and on about why ReplayTV is superior to Tivo, and I am sure Tivo users could do likewise vis a vis ReplayTV (though they're wrong ;) ).
Seriously though, the differences between the two are significant in a number of key areas that simply make ReplayTV a better choice for users with certain needs such as being able to easily transfer shows to PC, being able to stream shows between multiple units in a house, and being able to send/receive recordings via the Internet. Admittedly, not everyone has such needs. For those who do, however, Tivo really can't compete with ReplayTV.
For more opinions, you might read this (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=375306) recent thread.

Thanks, I am seriously thinking of getting Tivo.
Another question, if I wanted to get a DVD recorder, what are the top models?

Check out the Pioneer DVR-810H (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-auJJkLQ3Ige/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=6&g=69800&I=130DVR810H&o=p&a=0&cc=01&avf=N&search=pioneer). It has Tivo, HD and the Faroudja de-interlacing chip. Saw it yesterday at Best Buy for $600 before a $50 mail-in rebate.

Any one have a comparison between the Pioneer DVR810H and the Pioneer Elite DVR-57H ???
Trying to decide if I can go with the 810 for now ... or if the 57H is really worth the upgrade.

My understanding is that units with Tivo such as the Pioneer 810H don't allow the recorded content to be edited.
