The JVC phone rep says this is their newest 2004 model. I own the cheap Philips DivX player (Walmart, $69.99) and am considering returning it for this player considering JVC's high quality.
I called my local Best Buy and was told the $122.99 price will only last until Saturday. Afterwards, it'll return to $129.99. Some folks have received 10% off BB coupons which would lower the price to $110.69+sales tax.
I'm crossing my fingers that this player's back and forward speeds are faster than Philip's 8x considering JVC's speeds are 60x standard for nearly all models. I also wonder if the JVC is capable of resuming divx and mpg files; the Philips model doesn't support resume.
Two things concern me:
1) The JVC product page makes no mention of firmware downloads/upgrades. Maybe this is a non-issue considering how new the model is.
2) It doesn't mention support for xvid files. The Philip's box doesn't mention it either, so maybe it's safe to assume xvid is supported by default?
For anyone who owns this player, please share your opinions. If you also own[ed] the Philips, please compare and contrast.
