Official DVDTalk ESPN Football 2k5 League thread

There has been a lot of interest in creating a DVDTalk League for this game so i Figured I'd start the main thread for it. We can figure out when to start it (do we want to wait a few weeks to let everyone get acclimated with the game?) how we choose teams and so forth. When you start a league your league gets it own website, and it has its own league forum on it. So after I start the league we can use that forum to discuss. Team choosing wise my suggestion is for everyone to submit 3 choices ranked in importance. And we can randomly chose a sort or seniority ofder to clear up any people who have the same matches. Any other ideas or comments? We have room for only 32 teams!!

1. No Bad Sportsmanship
2. No quitting
3. No using the hurry up offense on every down.
4. On 4th down Punt or Kick FG unless down by at least 14 in first half.
5. No using a software glitch to give you an advantage. example: calling multiple audibles to get the other team to go off sides. (note: There are currently no know glitches)

Guys, I stopped using xbox live awhile back but I am about to get my account going again this week. I'll be picking this title up as soon as i can also and would like to join the league. I really only have one preference for teams, broncos, but I will play whichever team I get. Can't we setup some kind of draft?

I agree with all of those; however, I think you might want to consider being able to go for it if the scenario is something along the lines of 4th and inches and you are somewhere between your opponents 30-40 yard line.

What's the total time we want to take per game for the dvdtalk league?

From last years football games:
3 minute quarters take approx. 30 minutes to play
5 minute quarters take approx. 45 minsutes to play
8 minute quarters take approx. 1 hour to ply.

ya five min works for me just like NCAA. and obviously its not like you can never go for it on 4th down (especially when its inches to go) in fact 9 out of ten time if its inches i go for, something i think they should do in real life.

as far as doing a draft, i think the method i have going right now (if every goes right) might not necessitate a draft. if when i see everyone's list it looks like a huge mess we can do a draft but if a few people have to get their second choice i think that will we the fair and quickest way to do it. but than again i always play along league majority rule.

I would love to get in on this, I should have the game in about a week. The only team I really want would be the Bills, and I don't really see anyone getting upset about not getting them =o) Also, I think a fantasy draft for the rosters, or just an automatic draft of the rosters wouldn't be a bad idea. It evens out the teams so that whoever is stuck with bengals can still have a shot =o)

I don't know how everyone else feels, but that would kind of take away the whole point of wanting to play with a particular team, not to mention the time it would involve.

ya i was assuming that there would be no fantasy draft, you take what team you get. (heck my first choice is the Bears) But if an overwhelming majority wants one.........

Also i was thinking that maybe on Sunday July 31st starting the league. Will this allow enough time for everyone to get the game and play it enough? I will be more than willing to extend it though. Just a thought.

Let's decide when we are playing. Is there going to be a set night we are playing, or can you just set up a time with your opponent? Basically, I play softball Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Sunday is for WATCHING NFL games not playing video games.

The wife and I have our teams, but we are NFL fans, we start watching the ESPN pregame at 11 am and we don't stop watching until the Sunday night game goes off. We have thought about getting Titan season tickets, but we enjoy watching the games on TV too much.

I did see a video on the website that showed them setting up a league. it looked like you can pick the time frame in which you can play your game. I will set this to 7 days giving us a week to play. i imagine you just get in contact with whoever you play and agree on a time to play. my schedule is 2nd shift so i would need to play at nights the days i work or anytime on my days off. we can always set up a test league before the real one to see whats up.

I think having this a DVDTalk league should stymie play like that. But at any time if something like that should occur definately air the complaint on the website forum and collectively we can remedy it. I am sure it won't be a problem though.

I do see a point there. There is room for only three more teams. I will sort everything out tonight when I get off work. I was thinking of just having a straight draft, instead of the three choices thing. It will be easier to do. I found a website with a random number generator. Whatever numer is next to your name on list in the first post of this thread, is your number. I will generate 32 numbers and whatever order the website puts them in that will be the draft order and i will than post the results. Hopefully we can all pick our teams quickly. as soon as we fill the three remaining spots i will do this.

Do a lottery for those who want the same teams. Most of us were the only people who put a team number 1.

OK I set up the league. Log on and go to leagues. go to join season. when the list of seasons pops up push the black button to do a search type in dvdtalk. when the league comes up join it the clever password to join is: dvdtalk. But only join when you have secured a team because it asks you what team you want to be when you join. If you don't have a team yet don't join.

Some unsolicited advice from someone who has been heading leagues since NFL 2k1 -smile- ...

* Don't be in a rush to get this process started. Allow some time to pass. Some people are guaranteed to have just got the game and be in the "A league? Awesome!! I'm in" frame of mind at the moment.

Five days from now, some of the people may not like the game and wish to drop out. Or it will sink in that, with a real NFL pace, they've made a 17 week commitment that they'll have second thoughts about.

* Get an accurate assessment of the interest you have to determine the number of teams you end up with. Too few teams has never killed a league, but starting with too many has... many times. Remember, you're going to need replacement owners to fill in for the inevitable dropouts, and recruiting is a gigantic pain, even when successful. And if you're not successful, it can be a mortal wound.

* For drafts, I suggest what has become my league's tried and true method... when you've got all your coaching spots taken, the commissioner assigns each a number and visit www.random.org to do a random number sequence. Each person then emails a list with that number of teams, in order of desirability (#1 through whatever) to the commish.

[This serves as another check to find out who is really committed; many don't take the time to say "I'm out", and this is one point in the process where they can be screened out. Doubly important, they are being screened out before they given a team, which otherwise could have screwed up the plans of the people behind them.]

Then, the commish at some point does the draft, opening each email, according to the draft order, and assigning each coach the first team on his list which is unclaimed. [We always do the draft in a live AIM Chat so people have the ability to change their mind at the last moment, plus it's just more fun that way. -smile- ]

We are playing with normal rosters. I don't even think there is an option for a fantasy draft. I think that we will have to play with whatever roster ESPN makes up load up when you log on to Live. But for something big like Eddie George we can trade or something if both parties agree. God, a fantasy draft would take up a year judging by how long it takes us to just choose our teams.

I just got the game. What teams are still available just want to make sure before I pick. THere are alot that are not taken when you enter the league, don't want to take one that is spoken for.

Is it possible to change teams once somebody's picked a team? I'd hate for everybody to have to rechoose their team in a new league. If that happens, I think the password should be sent to someone only when it's his turn to choose a team.

HAHAHAHA so get this. I logged on to our league to sort some stuff out and i find that i have a message from the recently banned policy. He was asking me to keep in the league and was asking what teams are left. I hate to tell him he was easily replaced already!
