I got back from Canton last night and it was incredible. I could only stay there a little over an hour because I didn't get there until after 7, but every football fan has got to visit the mecca. There's this mini-Imax theater where the seating bowl rotates to a larger screen as the NFL films presentation goes from training camp to regular season. My internal monologue has been in John Vicenda's voice for the last 14 hours.

Too bad you couldn't stay longer. I was there in 93 for the induction ceremony.... was a personal guest of Larry Little. Got to meet the whole class: Dan Fouts, Chuck Noll, Walter Payton, Bill Walsh, and of course, LL. What a class! As cool as it was then, I'm certain it's even cooler 11 years later.

Trivia question: Though the NFL was founded in an auto showroom in Canton, the first game between NFL members was played elsewhere in Ohio. Where was that game, when was it played, and what was the score?

From profootballhof.com
On September 26, 1920 the first game featuring an APFA team was played at Rock Island's Douglas Park. A crowd of 800 watched the Independents defeat the St. Paul Ideals 48-0.

I was there in 1996 or 1997 -- good museum, but I think I can only spend about 4 hours in there tops.

Close, but incorrect. Yes, the Rock Island Independents played a game on 9/26/20, but it was against a non-APFA team. The question was what was the first game between member teams, and thus is considered the first NFL game?

A week later, October 3, the first game matching two APFA teams was held. At Triangle Park, Dayton defeated Columbus 14-0, with Lou Partlow of Dayton scoring the first touchdown in a game between Association teams. The same day, Rock Island defeated Muncie 45-0.

Correct. The first NFL game ever played was on the hallowed ground of Triangle Park in Dayton, Ohio on 3 October 1920. The Triangles beat the visiting Columbus Panhandles 14-0.

Of the original teams that met at the first organizational meeting on 8/20/20 in Canton, the Triangles lasted the longest, playing ten seasons from 1920-29.

For those interested, the Triangles' franchise was sold following the 1929 season and became the Brooklyn Dodgers (1930-43), and the Brooklyn Tigers (1944) before merging with the Boston Yanks (1944-48). The Yanks became the New York Bulldogs (1949), New York Yanks (1950-51), Dallas Texans (1952), and finally, the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts (1953-present).

There were a total of 14 teams in the APFA in 1920. They were:

*+Akron Pros (1920-25) > Indians (1926)
Buffalo All-Americans (1920-23) > Bisons (1924-25) > Rangers (1926)
*+Canton Bulldogs (1920-26)
Chicago Tigers (1920 only)
*+Cleveland Tigers (1920) > Indians (1921)
Columbus (OH) Panhandles (1920-22) > Tigers (1923-27)
*+Dayton Triangles (1920-29) (see above)
+Decatur Staleys (1920) > Chicago Staleys (1921) > Bears (1922-present)
Detroit Heralds (1920-21)
+Hammond (IN) Pros (1920-26)
+Muncie (IN) Flyers (1920-21)
+Racine Cardinals (1920) > Chicago Cardinals (1921-59) > St Louis Cardinals (1960-87) > Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals (1988-present)
+Rochester (NY) Jeffersons (1920-25)
+Rock Island (IL) Independents (1920-25)

* = One of the original four franchises from Aug 20, 1920
+ = One of the ten franchises present at 2nd meeting on Sep 17, 1920

Two of the teams (Bears and Cardinals) are still in the league today. A third team (Triangles) are represented in part by todays's Indianapolis Colts.
