A post dedicated to Caslevania:Symphony of the Night, one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, side scroller of all time.

Picked this up years ago and still puts some modern games to shame, beautiful graphics, haunting soudtrack and great fun.

Thoughts welcome.

Agreed, wonderful game. I need to play through it again when I can find the time....
*awaits the inevitable "best Super Metroid remake" comment*

Both are classics, but SOTN stands alone. I enjoyed all the recent GBA castlevanias, but none could touch the masterpiece that was SOTN. I wish Konami would release it again on the GBA or better yet do a Castelvania collection disc like the current Sonic and Mega Man ones.

SOTN may be my second favorite game of all time next to Snatcher on the Sega CD.

SOTN is by far the funnest Castlevania. AOS coming in a very close second for me. Dont know about HOD, havent played it yet. Since Metroid came up, how does Metroid Fusion compare to Super Metroid? I'm playing Fusion right now, and I have to say I'm dissapointed, only reason I played was because I heard it was Castlevaniaish.

While I liked SOTN, I never understood the following it had. I never even heard any hype for it really, my friend just said borrow and play this.

Oh well, to each his own.

Agreed. SOTN still stands as the pinnacle of sidescrollers. Graphics, control, music, sound effects and the sheer number of hours to play it make this a title every PS or PS2 owner should keep in their library.

Both are great games, but I still prefer Super Metroid. It just seems to have better replay value for whatever reason.

Probably the best video game soundtrack ever too.

I also wanted to add when you complete the first "phase" of the castle,
the whole damn thing turns upside down and you have to beat it again. AWESOME! I was definitely not ready for that.

I beat this game in a single sitting. A Single 23 hour sitting. It was glorious.

You know when they release a CD of just the music for a video game (EXCLUDING Dance Dance Revolution) you know its a kick ass soundtrack.

I've played almost every single major video game since about 1981, and SOTN is my favorite game of all time.

Just thinking about it makes me want to play it.

It could quite possibly be The Perfect Video Game.

I love SOTN, but it's way too easy.

Especially that damn "underground" part of the castle like the tombs or the catacombs area, that ish sucks.

The assortment of weapons and items that are avaiable are awesome.\ too!

I picked Metal Slug 3 last week, and that mediocre title made me appreciate SOTN all the more. Absolutely the pinnacle of side scrollers. Maybe I'll give it a spin tonight. However,

GTA: VC is easily the greatest soundtrack of all-time. I mean, come on, the equivalent of 7 CDs, I Wear my Sunglasses at Night, Automatic, Africa, it's a beast!

I'm not sure if they released it here, but just about every game ever made has a CD soundtrack released in Japan :).

$16.99 shipped? Awesome! You won't be sorry, this game is too much fun, hopefully you got a nice home theater/surround sound system to enjoy the soundtrack. Let us know how you like it when you get it :)

10 years from now.. when all the Mafias, True Crimes, Military Spec Ops, Bloodranyes, all the NFL EXXXTREME THUGANOMICS, and Enter the Matrixes are forgotten (or remembered embarrassingly), love will still flow heavy for Symphony of the Night.

I agree, and as impressive a technological achievment GTA is, I'd have to include it in those bunch of games, because when it comes down to it, I'm not a huge fan of the gameplay as it is very repetitive and tiresome. I always end up playing those games and just losing intrest, and vice city was the exact same game as the first one.

Gotta love Symphony of the Night, one of the last great old school games to come out on a "next gen" console. I think dreamcast was the home of old school gaming and ultimately that was it's demise (I still play mine though).

Hopefully we will get to see one more non-gba Castlevania side scroller, I'd love to see what kind of effects and how large of a game they could make on ps2.

Just my $0.02

That is until they remake it for a new school crowd of kids who "dont like reading in their games." I keep hearing rumors (yeah i know rumors) that SoTn may get remade for the PSP. Honestly this masterpiece should not be remade, or even re touched the only thing I'd want to happen is it to get re-released with the original japanese voice track.

But just the same, this game is beautiful and holds a very special place in my gaming collection.

Great game, but I do like Dracula X (PCEngine Super CD) more.

Can you explain a little more about this? I know there was a Japanese version (I think it was Dracula X, but I might be mistaken on the title) anyways it was basically the same as SOTN I thought???

Dracula X- Nocturne in Moonlight is the japanese version of SoTn. It appeared on both Saturn and PSX. There is another Dracula X-Rondo of Blood that appeared on the Turbo Duo, that was later watered down for the SNES (but still pretty solid).

I think he means that he wishes you could listen to the voices in their original language. If there's one flaw with Castlevania: SotN, it's the English voice acting. It's not HORRIBLE, but the voices are mixed pretty loud and pretty much sound like people just reading lines in a studio. When you think back to the time and place (1997), voice acting in videogames usually wasn't very good. It wasn't until the following year when Metal Gear Solid raised the bar to the more cinematic, professional level that we've come accustomed to. Well, for the most part... there's still plenty of bad examples out there, as well as a few good ones pre-MGS.

I'm not 100% sure if Japanese voice actors took their job more seriously, or if the bad voices are just less noticeable when you can't understand the language.
