Absolutely. One of the most influential bands of the early 90's.

They'll be eligible in 2016. I could see them being inducted. Who else in the class of 1991 would be worthy of a nomination?

As DJLinus said, they aren't eligible and can't be for quite some time. There are some wonderful artists out there that can't be nominated for many years to come because of the Hall Of Fame's criteria...I guess it's 25 years after releasing a recording?

I don't see why not. Pearl Jam's really the only "grunge" band that has stuck around to be successful, prolific, and engaging. Rock 'n Roll at it's finest.

That is because they changed. Some people bitched about it, but face it, if they kept releasing 'Ten' every two years they would have gone the way of all the other alternative acts. They have grown as artists and musicians.

I disagree. Even though I'm not a huge fan, I think that they will definitely get in. Just look at the way that the music press rides Cobain's jock. They've practically given him sainthood.

Usually you have to have popularity over a long period of time, and I just don't think Pearl Jam has held that level of popularity at this point. At some point in their career, I think they will need some time of revival or watershed comeback album to get in. Other than the first 2 or 3 albums, most people have no clue about Pearl Jam's work or what they have been up to.
I'm not bagging on them and I like PJ, but based on history, I just don't think they would get in if their career just continues to go as it has.

I think they will... and they definitely should. Every album of theirs is great.
I thought about what Cdollaz said about how they haven't sustained popularity, and I don't think that matters. They always nominate those 50s bands that I have never heard of or who had one or two hits. Even though Pearl Jam isn't as big now, from their first two or three albums they probably had 10 bonafide hits.

They still sell out every show... They lost some public view when they were fighting Ticketmaster and stopped putting out videos.. but they have been very innovative... one thing that comes to mind is releasing all the 2003 shows on CD and giving people the ability to listen to them right after the show occured. big use of technology to spread their music

Well if you want to look at it as 'hits', I believe Jeremy was their biggest hit and that only went to around No.75 on billboard that year. But I could be wrong.

Daughter

Betterman

all get played on the radio all the time. The only reason the singles from VS. weren't on the Billboard charts is because they were not released as singles (in the US)

Well, they may not be popular to the drone's, the pop music masses, but they sell out every place in the world, packing the loyal fans night after night...and these are not small, claustrophic leaking roof clubs either.
Those who stopped listening after Ten and Vs. will always say such things...
Pearl Jam continues to create ambitiously artistic music on their own terms.
Will they be inducted, yes when their times comes.

I just remember reading in Blender, in their monthy "greatest songs of all time.." article. They covered Jeremy last year. They mentioned how high it charted(around 75) and that it was their highest hit. Maybe they meant highest original song?
You gotta think that when alternative acts like PJ & STP were popular, they still weren't as popular as acts like Boyz II Men, TLC, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, and many others. It was still a niche genre. It was big, but not that big. I don't think it really exploded until after Cobain took his life.

"Tremor Christ" No. 40
"Better Man" No. 40
"I Got ID" No. 28

No, not joking. I think Nirvana is one of the most over-rated bands ever. I know quite a few others would agree. They also only made a handfull of records. I'm sure there will be those who will lobby to get them in, but do they really deserve it? Its debatable.
Pearl Jam on the other hand has been making albums/touring for well over ten years. They still have a huge following.

Like Nirvana or not, they helped usher in a new genre of music to the mainstream and a style- grunge. It isn't often that happens. Listen to the radio today, everything is still hanging on to that thread that these bands started in the early 90's. It is easier to do that to make money than try and do something comepletely different and original.

I think people forget how groundbreaking Nirvana and Pearl Jam were when they came out. Prior to Nevermind, Michael Jackson's Thriller was #1. I don't know about you guys, but for my friends and I, we could relate to Nirvana a lot more than we could Michael Jackson.
Yes, grunge was short-lived, and somewhat vapid, and near they end became ridiculous. But it really helped out a lot of people who couldn't stand the "plastic-fantastic" world of the 80s.
We will see, the RNR Hall of Fame Inductions should get interesting as we approach the 25th Anniversary to "Hair Metal". I will say this though, if Poison get inducted Nirvana should be instantly let in.

There is no way Poison will ever get in the HoF. The only hair band that I can think of that will get in is Bon Jovi.
As for PJ...not a big fan, there are some okay albums, but I can understand if they do make it. Definitely a lot more bands/artists that are deserving who have not been inducted yet.

That is what I was thinking. Last I checked that and Eagles: GHv.1 were flopping back and forth for biggest album sales of all time. But I haven't heard much about it lately.
Actually PJ's Vitalogy was in the top 5 first week album sales of all time list. But alas that was before N*Sync, Britney Spears and Eminem brainwashed the public I'm betting it still may be skirting the top 10. lol. I read shit like this and it just hangs around in my head. Kinda useless stuff.

How dare you compare Pearl Jam to Creed? Creed has got to be one of the most no-talent ex-bands ever formed. Anyways how can PJ sound like Creed. Ten came out 13 years ago and Creed formed maybe 5-6 years ago.

GnR I do not consider a hair band and may make it. All the others? I can't see it. No way no how...if they did make it I would be speechless. Only way Coverdale gets in is through Deep Purple and that's if they even consider him a major part of DP.

They didn't have SoundScan until the early 90s when Nevermind came out. Because of that, Billboard went by the number of units shipped to retailers.
Once SoundScan was created, a more real-time Billboard chart could be created.

Yes...I do know that...in fact Coverdale (imho) is a very good singer. There was definitely a make over due to the times but early Coverdale/Whitenake is still a great spin every now and then. Even though there are a couple of songs I like during the MTV time (some were actually old songs rehashed) it's a shame that he is only known as 'the dude with the chick on the Jaguars.'
