New Spike Lee movie SHE HATES ME. What the crap?

I reccently got linked to a page at the imdb about Spike Lee's next movie
www.imdb.com/title/tt0384533/

I had trouble believing this was really his next film. But I put the title into the search engine and came up with dozen's of articles about the cast, mentioning them in this movie.

I am ye of little faith. There's no way I can picture this being a watchable movie. I'm a big fan of Spike Lee's work. I really think that since the late 90's he's crawled outta a slump and made some of his best films (He Got Game, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour). So what the hell is this mess? Does he wanna head back to his Girl 6 days?

Maybe I'll be proven wrong. But Oi, does that sound terrible.

From IMDB . . .
Plot Outline: Fired from his job for exposing corrupt business practices, a former biotech executive turns to impregnating wealthy lesbians for profit.
Possibly the greatest plot outline I've ever read.

Is major XFL Football star "He Hate Me" going to sue due to the title?

Also, please, for the love of all things holy, it's "to", not "too", QuiGonJosh.

A bald student, a basketball coach, and a pathetic eskimo start a homeless shelter.

Yes! Finally, I have the script idea that will propell me to stardom!

"She Hate Me" New Spike Lee movie

This movie is opening up on July 30th. Looks interesting for a romatic comedy by Lee and plus the lovely Ms. Monica Bellucci appears in the movie.

Here is the link for the trailer:

Interesting is an understatement.

That was quite mind-blowing!!! Makes me wish I was in the guy's shoes.

By the way, having to see Q-Tip after all these years since Do The Right Thing was great.

girl 6 gotta hate me, she's got game.

the plot sounds awful on paper, but the film might be interesting. Spike lee's last film, 25th hour, was his strongest in a long time.

I remember reading about this when it was in production, and thinking that it had to be a joke.

Dosen't look any better to me in the previews. Although I do like the Lee is constantly shifting gears in the movies he makes.

after Entertainment Weekly gave it a savage review and brandishing with it a F. I would love to hear what others have thought of this film.

help! I'm being stalked!

So you know I hold it in some high esteem. Fans of Lee's Bamboozled should like this because it features the "expressionistic and I don't give a damn about the story" Spike Lee. I think Bamboozled is the better picture and one of the best of this decade, but She Hate Me is vastly entertaining for similar reasons.

And circumstances preceding and following my seeing the movie helped me to verbalize my opinion:

In the furor over Demme's The Manchurian Candidate remake I began revisiting the original, part of this included rereading a sharp and insightful review by Johnathon Rosenbaum (done for the 1988 rerelease). The relating point being that Rosenbaum lays out the way Frankenheimer portrays stereotyped characters and situations. The reviewer equates the director with a jazz musician, taking the familiar and subverting it, not by outright opposition but by taking the stereotypes to certain extremes. Extremes that clash and gel with one another to create a whole new creature, one that surpasses simple narrative. That the end product (the 1962 film) appears so gonzo and different helps the parallel.

So while this review helped foster my dislike of the Demme remake I couldn't shake off the points Rosenbaum made when I saw the Spike Lee picture. Imagine my surprise when afterwards I read Ebert's review and found myself actually agreeing with the Chicago Suntimes film critic (a feat not matched since the last century!)

Anyway, Ebert echoed my impressions of the film: that taken as a normal narrative the film fails, but by playing with obvious stereotypes and impossible situations Lee pulls a much more instinctual response from the audience. A response and impression much more intriguing than a "normal" narrative can hope to achieve. So kudos to Ebert for a fine review, though I wish he'd be as open-minded to other films that attempt the same. Also, he was a bit arrogant in calling out his peers when he has been the same way (Kiarostami anyone?)

So I enjoyed She Hate Me for being all over the place, for having clichéd characters, for its syrupy score, for its trite situations, but mostly for how Spike Lee assembled it all. And the whole "birth" thing.

stalked - yeah right, you listed it in your film list at number 34... (I anit no dummy I read your film list).

I can't tell if you review made me more receptive to see this or less.. guess I should rent 'Bamboozled' before subjecting myself to his latest film.
