I hope it comes in a cool DVD case like Battlestar Galactica - Oooh, maybe a circular case that looks like Doctor Theo!

I loved this show when I was a kid. Until they started showing it on Sci-Fi I would've picked this up in a second. But seeing it now, it just doesn't have the same magic to me it had when it first aired.

The entire series? I thought it was on for at least 3-4 seasons, but that was a LONG time ago ;)

Nope, one full season and then a half-season the second year where they changed most of the plot/cast. 37 episodes total:

http://epguides.com/BuckRogers/

The second season was really pretty terrible, but I'm glad they're including it just for completion sake. Doesn't make much sense to leave it off.

Agreed...I don't think this show holds up very well. Personally, I'll only consider a purchase if the bonus features are extensive.

So, how does the show age in comparison to, say Battlestar Galactica? Untill the release, I hadnt seen Galactica in ages but had fond childhood memories - and I thought the show was pretty fun.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with Buck. I havent seen it in 20 years, but I loved it as a kid. So if it holds up as well as Galactica, I'll be happy.

Buck Rogers is a goofier show than Galactica (intentionally so...)

The 2-hour pilot still holds up very well, I think. I give that one a spin every now and then, and always enjoy it.

The show afterwards for the first season was very uneven. It has a fun quality to it and I still love watching them, but lacks the consistency and attempts at "epic" stories that Galactica has. It's basically Buck going around, solving mysteries/problems, and romancing the chicks. Sort of a low-budget, sci-fi James Bond.

For the brief season, they threw all of that out and had them exploring space. It didn't work.

But that's a lot of $$$, I'll Netflix it first.

Galactica holds up much better. Although Buck has more eye candy going for it...if you know what I mean. :)

Nothing special. They went in pretty much unsure whether they'd make it past the initial 13-episode order or not, so no "finale" was planned (or filmed), as they were hoping for the ratings to justify a "full" season order.

Of course, we all know what happened.

Was the pilot episode originally shown in the theaters or on tv like Battlestar Galactica?

I'm pretty sure it was in the theaters. Was it edited and/or changed like the Galactica movie was (IE: Baltar dieing and so on) - this I do not know.

One of the most memorable vision I have from the movie is the very 70's dressed girl who lays and rolls around on the "Buck Rogers" logo during the title sequence with one of the most cheesiest songs ever. When the show went into syndication in the 80's I would get up at 7am on Saturdays and watch it. Now its hard to find. Looking forward to the set

There was a theatrical release in 1979, before the show premiered that fall. I don't usually buy shows for nostalgia value, but I'll make an exception here.

Yes, the pilot was shown theatrically, but they learned from the Galactica mistake and actually put it in U.S. theaters *before* it aired on TV. ;)

I thought the theatrical release was initially suppose to be just that until it became so popular that they decided to make a TV series out of it.

Considering the high price for it I think I'll pass on it for now until the price drops.

"In the year 1987, NASA launched the last of America's deep space probes..."

I hope the movie is released separately. Watched it dozens of times as a kid, so I'm sure I'll still get a kick out of it. But the entire series may be a bit too much. (And even as a 10-year-old, I never cared for Admiral Asimov and Chricton and Hawk. Christ, I still remember their names. Help me...)

And am I the only one who still remembers the lyrics to that cheesy song?

Nope, it was always the 2-hour TV pilot for the TV series... they just sent it to theaters first for a quick buck, since they saw how much Battlestar was making when it was re-released on the big screen.

When Buck was released in theaters, it was already on the TV schedule for the coming fall.

Another lie told to me as a kid. I'm still pissed that I didnt get my flying car in 2001, so this just adds fuel to the fire.

Considering it is 37 episodes, I don't think the price is all that high.

I remember watching this avidly as a kid. I was 10-11 when it first ran. I watched it a few weeks ago on Sci-Fi and boy, was it bad. At least the 2nd season. In an episode I watched they played a video on a hi-tech computer, one of the original Commodore Pets!

Perhaps the first season was better?

Might be worth a rental. I would at least like to see the pilot.

You all do realize that a $90 SRP translates to about $63 actual price, don't you? 30% off?

Not too bad for 37 episodes.

As for the show holding up over time, it doesn't. Period. I saw the Hawk introduction episode on Sci-Fi some time ago and the show looked terrible. Probably on the scale of Star Trek TOS visual and tech wise.

Im 34 now and watched this show when i was a kid and really liked it but the one thing im learning from all these releases is that they arent as good as you remember them. That being said i think i had one of my 1st sexual experiences while watching Erin Gray in those tight spandex space suits so atleast theres that ;)

It's probably not as great as I remember it, but I'll still spring for it. It's got something fun that makes the show still enjoyable.

Buck Rogers is just fun. A nice break from the more serious shows. Not sure why anyone would compare it to 1999. Very different shows.

Neither Erin Gray nor Gil Gerard are participating in extras. They had a deal together at the beginning of the year to do commentary tracks and interviews, but Univeral dropped those plans in the spring. A fan-based campaign has not yet changed their mind. There's still a short amount of time to make it happen, though, if we hurry.

Read more about all of this here (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=1875).

Will they also be releasing the theatrical movie?
Will it be part of this set?

By the way, there are a number of guest stars to look for in the show. The orginal Buck Rogers was in it as well as a almost unregonizable Marki Post.

Yes, there were several differences in the theatrical version and the TV version. Unfortunately, both versions contain unique footage, so neither one is the "complete" version.

Hopefully, we'll get at least the TV version of the pilot (as it's being marketed as a 'complete TV series') and if we don't get a seperate "movie" release, then at least include the scenes cut out of the theatrical movie as delted scenes.

Some of the differences:

The theatrical version contained:
* some slightly racier dialogue between Buck and Wilma.
* King Draco makes a brief appearance at the end of the film (the rest of his scenes do not appear in EITHER version)
* Tigerman's death scene

The TV version:
* has different opening credits
* had an extra scene added to the end showing us Buck's new apartment, along with the set-up for the first season, with Huer offering Buck a "job" working for the Directorate.
* Tigerman's death was removed to allow the character to come back
* Twiki's slightly dirty line "I'm freezing my ball bearings off" is re-dubbed to "my memory tapes are turning blue."
* Bizarrely, in a scene battle where a female pilot was killed in the theatrical version, the TV version shows a male pilot being killed instead (I guess the network found that more palatable).
* in scenes involving the Draconia, William Conrad's voice is substituted with Vic Perrin's.

I really hope that the DVD set at least contains cut scenes (ala Battlestar Galactica), including Draco's apperance at the celebration/dance on Earth (a still from this scene appeared in a Famous Monsters at the time) and anything else that was left out of both versions.
