Well, we can still hope. I mean Arroyo won, so anything is possible right? (even a 5th game in a row?) Hopefully he can get some of the same run support like in the last 4 games.

before the season had started? I would have easily expected at least this or better.

after having everyone go down with injury and only having the full starting lineup together for a week of the season? no way I would have expected to still be close.. good thing the the east is pretty much just beating each other up and noone is running away.

No way, not with all the offense that went away during the offseason. And with Maddux leaving. And I knew Ortiz wasn't going to win 21 games again.

I suppose I expected .500 ball to be reasonable. I guess it's more of a weakened division this year that they're still near the top more than anything.

i wasnt looking at what they were losing
i was looking at the team they were fielding

sure.. losing sheff was huge... and not something you could just replace.. but the remaining cast (with drew coming in at right) still was a pretty good lineup.

chipper, andruw, and jd came into the season looking to be a pretty damn solid outfield
furcal is great leadoff when not injured, and a hell of a ss (again, when not injured)
it was safe to assume estrada was going to step up in place of lopez.. but i never thought he would do as well has he has
having giles in the infield was also solid.. and he is generally consistent with the bat..
besides that.. coming into the season, i had hopes of derosa picking up and playing to his potential at one of the other infield spots.. and then plugging in one of the remaining players at the other spot..

with that lineup.. there was no reason to be all that concerned.. if it hadnt been for the injuries..

and with a rotation of ortiz, byrd, thompson, hampton, and wright..
and alfonseca, ramirez, and the rest of the crew at middle relief
and of course, smoltz closing it out..

its hard to say that coming into the season.. and expecting everyone to play to at least their normal past averages.. it was easy to project the team to do pretty well..

but it took less than a week for the wheels to start falling off, as the injuries came in.. there have been way too many to overcome, and as I mentioned, it really helps that the division is so evenly matched that they just beat up on each other, rather than anyone pulling away.

not to mention.. you cant ever overlook the affect Mazzone, Cox, and Schuerholz can have.

the other day, someone asked if steinbrenner should get into the mlb hof.. if your in the camp that non players should be able to get voted in.. It would be hard as hell to say that all 3 of these guys dont deserve it!

MILWAUKEE -- Ken Griffey Jr. left the Cincinnati Reds' game at Milwaukee on Saturday night after he strained his right hamstring while running down a fly ball in the fourth inning.

The Reds said the All-Star outfielder will return to Cincinnati to have an MRI on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury.

Griffey, 20th on the career home runs list with 501, chased down a fly ball hit into the right-center field gap by Brady Clark. As Griffey neared the warning track in a full sprint, the ball bounced off his glove and ended up as a triple.

Griffey appeared to hurt his leg as he landed on it, but continued to track down the ball and walked off the field immediately after the play with no apparent limp.

He has been hampered by a series of well-documented injuries during the past few years.

Griffey missed more than a month with a torn hamstring that bothered him throughout the 2001 season. He spent two long stints on the 15-day disabled list with a torn patella tendon and a torn right hamstring in 2002, then went to the DL twice again last year for a dislocated right shoulder and torn ankle tendon.

Last week, Griffey was voted an All-Star starter for the 12th time. He's hitting .251 with 20 homers and 60 RBI, but has just one home run since hitting his 500th on June 20.
