No More PSOne LCDs

Snap-on LCD monitor and speakers to make last shipment in August

The official LCD monitor and speakers for Sony's PSone console, which made it possible to play the diminutive system without a TV attached, is set to be discontinued by the company later this summer.

Sony Computer Entertainment announced this week that it has halted production of the peripheral, which was originally released two years ago - coming somewhat late to market, as a number of third party peripheral vendors had already launched their own versions of the device when the official one arrived.

One last shipment of Sony's PSone & LCD Monitor bundle will be issued in Japan this August, according to reports. The bundle has waned in popularity recently, not least because it is now expensive compared to the more powerful current generation systems, priced as it is at 18,000 Yen (134 Euro).

I just picked up a PSOne/LCD Combo on eBay for a good price. I always wanted to get my hands on the combo, but was going to do so when I got rid of my PS2 (before picking up a PS3). This sort of pushed the purchase up, but no big deal. I'm just glad I have one in the mail.

I'd pick one up for $4.99.

We've had one for a while, used to take it on trips all the time. Can even play it in the car with an AC adaptor.

Plenty of 3rd-party units out there, so no biggie.

These were the best screens I've ever seen. Most of the third party ones are junk with buzzing speakers and bad color.

I was lucky enough to get one clearanced at Target and still use it. It even works good when you hook a DVD player up to it. Kind of wish Sony tries this again by releasing a small PS2 with screen. Then you would have a portable DVD player and game system.
