How are the players selected to be in the HR Derby? Do they just select the HR leaders that were already selected to be in the All Star game?

They are invited by MLB, whatever that means.

MLB invites the top home run hitters of the year that made the All-Star game. They move down the list as players decline the invitation and eventually get to players that are not on the All-Star roster, such as Raffy Palmeiro (who has 500 plus career homers).

Using Kevin Kline's voice from A Fish Called Wanda.

Dis-a-ppointed!

We have the All-Star game taken place in a ballpark built with the short porch in left with home runs being able to be hit completely out of the stadium as a feature yet only righty will be appearing in the HR Derby.

I really wish Manny would have accepted since Vlad and ARod wouldn't either. Hopefully Sammy will be on that night and put on a little show.

Isn't Bonds playing? He should put on a show.....

Yes, agreed. But I would imagine that although a few HR's will go out to left for the lefties that it would be nothing compared to what a righty would do thus not being as dramatic given the features of the park.

Enjoy it this year while you can. Next year it will be the "Deep Outfield FlyBall" Derby here at the grand canyon known as Comerica Park.

I was just going to pose that question. I guess the word is Bonds is getting some money from MLB to participate. Anyone have any links on it?

I wish Raffy would bail in favor of Manny so we actually could get someone in addition to Sammy that could put a few completely out of the stadium and possibly across the street to the buildings.

They invited Manny and he didn't want to do it.

I know. That's how Ortiz got the spot cause he suggested him.
