I doubt this will get as much responce as the Euro 2004 thread, but is anyone else watching?

Result from eariler:

Columbia 1 - Venezuela 0

Match in progress

Bolivia 2 - Peru 0

Though Peru has has some great chances they can't seem to capitalize on them.

update:

Pizarro converts the PK, Boliva 2 - Peru 1

Peru scores again late to tie it up and the game ends in a tie. I'll never understand the fall back defense that so many teams play after going up two goals..it seems to burn them more often than not

I was rooting for Peru, but they looked pathetic. Terrible passes and they hardly ever marked the ball. They had so many chances to score goals, but they didnt capitalize. Hopefully theyll do better in the next game.

They pulled out last summer or early fall IIRC.

Today's action from Group B:

Mexico vs Uruguay
Argentina vs Ecuador

Copenhagen

Mexico and Uruguay tied at 1 at the half after Mexico scored in extra time

Game end in a 2-2 tie

Copenhagen
07-07-04, 10:39 PM
After tying the game and really not playing that badly, Ecuador gives up 5 unaswered goals to Argentina, including a hat trick to Saviola

Games for Group C:

Costa Rica V Paraguay

Brasil v Chile

Copenhagen
07-08-04, 10:36 PM
Costa Rica played a great first half, a subpar second half and got called for a suspect penalty in the box late which resulted in their loss to Paraguay 1-0.

Brasil looked off most of the night probably due to fielding a B team for Copa America. Chile was given an early penalty which was converted then overturned from what appeared to be people in the area before the shot. The subsequent PK was Beckham'd. Brasil scored in extra time in the second on a nice play from Luis Fabiano in the box to get the win 1-0

Even though Brazil is playin with a "B" team its still a very impressive team, just needed this match with Chile to get together... Pareira should also make the startin line up with Diego who came in on the 2nd half, that way its more offensive...

Group B results:

Columbia earns their way into the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Boliva. Peru earns the win over Venezuela 3-1, but will be with Pizzaro for their match against Columbia after picking up two yellow cards and the latter probably would have been a red if wasn't carring a card already.

I totally agree. Dudu really hasn't shown me anything that would make him a logical choice over Diego. For that matter Edu also didn't show me much. I was pleasantly suprised in the play of Gustavo Nery, who should be more than an adequate replacement for Roberto Carlos once his national team days are through.

Well I missed the games today due to work :grunt: but Uruguay beat Ecuador 2-1 and Argentina fell to Mexico 1-0. The loss puts Argentina to third in their group with a match remaining against Uruguay.

Today's action from group C:

Paraguay vs Chile
Brasil vs Costa Rica

I'm curious to see if Parreira changes the lineup at all by inserting Diego into the starting lineup and possible Felipe as well.

Snowflakes
07-11-04, 01:24 PM
Parreira will probably not change the starting line-up... At least thats what he said in his press conference...
Brasil x Costa Rica will be an interesting match. Brasil beat them 5 x 2 in the World Cup, but that was a different story. Costa Rica comes from a loss and needs a win.

Snowflakes

End of first half of the Brasil x Costa Rica match... Brasil playin like crap the entire half and one perfect play at the end...

Adriano scores 3 to tie Saviola for the tourney lead helping Brazil to a 4-1 win against Costa Rica. Dudu didn't start in favor of Kleberson and Vanger Love received his first cap coming on as a second half sub for Luis Fabiano.

Snowflakes did you get a chance to watch any of the Sao Paulo / Santos game?

Snowflakes
07-11-04, 07:09 PM
No didnt see it... But i know that Santos beat Sao Paulo at the last minutes of the game...

It was a great second half start for Brasil today... At least the first 25 min... Then it kinda got slow paced...

Copenhagen
07-11-04, 07:16 PM
They held back, no need to keep scoring. The free kick goal to end the game was a thing of beauty for Santos, placed perfectly in the upper 90.

Snowflakes
07-11-04, 08:18 PM
Well I just hope that now that Brasil has qualified, Pareira will put some new faces such as Felipe to play against Paraguay

Copenhagen
07-11-04, 08:19 PM
Felipe in the starting lineup would be an excellent addition as he has had a great club season so far.

Copenhagen
07-11-04, 11:09 PM
Chile lost a great chance to pick up 3 points on Cristaldo's long range tying goal about 10 minutes from full time. Paraguay is now sitting comfortably with 4 points and a game looming with Brasil on Wednesday.

Final Group A matches for tomorrow:

Venezuela vs Bolivia
Peru vs Colombia

Us soccer note. The States played to a 1-1 tie against Poland today after largley outplaying them for the entire game. McBride missed a penalty shot and Beasley had more than a few opportunities to score that came up short. Bruce Arena will have to wait until their next match against Jamacia the CONCACAF semifinal round. Eddie Gaven made his national team debut as the fourth youngest ever to take the field for the US national team.

That was tough to watch, especially the PK. I'm just glad they stayed strong through the full 90 and got the tie as they were clearly the better team. Another brilliant dive by Wolff. We grew up together, and he was always pulling that shit to the dismay of opposing coaches. It's so much fun to watch him do it for America now. Gaven looked solid out there, and with those sunken eyes, he looks a lot older than he really is. Good to see him take a beating and keep hopping back up.

Pretty damn_exciting Peru and Columbia game not counting the 8 or so yellow cards (I think I lost count). Peru ralllied from a 2-0 deficit to gain the point and take second place in group B behind Columbia. In the early game Venezuela drawed with Boliva ending thier tournament. Boliva has a shot at advancing providing Chile and Costa Rica help them out with a couple of draws.

In other news Parreira hinted at making a few lineup changes for their match against Paraguay. Diego may get his first start and Maicon should get the start ahead of Mancini.

Mexico striker Jared Borgetti left the club to return home after the death of his sister. It is not known when or if he will return for any future Copa America matches.

Copenhagen
07-14-04, 11:26 AM
Scores from 7/13:

Mexico 2 Ecuador 1
Argentina 4 Uruguay 2

I missed the better part of the early game but as for the Argentina / Uruguay match is was a pretty one sided. Uruguay had no sense of team, even less when they went down a man. Argentina probably should have scored more goals, but they too had a less than normal performance imo.

Today final Group C matches:

Costa Rica vs Chile
Brasil vs Paraguay

Copenhagen
07-16-04, 12:04 PM
Costa Rica beat Chile 2-1 to advance to the round of 8 and Paraguay down Brasil 2-1 to win group C.

Parreria lost that game the minute he decided to pull Felipe out of the lineup. He was distributing the ball better than any central midfielder I have seen in recent memory and had the ability to dribble any defender at will. I'm still not sure why he has so much faith in Dudu or even Kelberson over the him. Eventhough he brought in Diego in his place, Diego just doesn't bring the same type of play to the pitch that Felipe does. The loss gives Brasil a match against Mexico in the round of eight instead of what probably would have been an easier match against Uruguay. Hopefully the return to sea-level will be a welcome change to the squad as they have never been really effective in the altitude.

Quarterfinal action tomorrow:

Peru vs Argentina
Columbia vs Costa Rica

Snowflakes

Yup... Pareira made stupid moves and ended up in a defeat... However Felipe tends to get very tired in the second half of matches so who knows how well he would have played...
Brazil was playin with two different teams the defense just sucked... Cris didnt know what the hell he was doing, while the offensive side looked good, up until the substitutions... That game just sucked, waste of my time... Luis Fabiano did make a fabulous goal though...

My Guesses for the semi-finals:
Peru x Argentina--> Argentina
Colombia x Costa Rica--> Well Costa Rica is playin with a lot of will, but I think Colombia will come out...

Brazil x Mexico--> Tough match, however Brazil's team is now playin at sea level what they are used to, so they are supposed to run more... Brazil

Uruguay x Paraguay--> Didn't see any Uruguay matches, but Im going with Paraguay...

Semifinals then would be:
Argentina x Colombia

Brazil x Paraguay

Who Knows really??

Snowflakes

Colombia x Costa Rica

Copenhagen
07-17-04, 10:14 PM
Growing up with a father from Rio, it pains me to watch Argentina win but they were the better team and Peru just squandered far too many opportunities (suprise!) to win the game. And for the love of god can they please junk the chuck and pray approach that they use to advance the ball, use a midfielder. Just not Soto he tends to hold the ball too damn_long. One other thing that irked me. When you are trailing it is never a good idea to play the ball backward you cannot score a tying goal when you play in reverse.

Costa Rica so far has look pretty lackluster. I didn't expect them to win this game but really they are my only viable team to root for from CONCACAF.

Today's quarter final action:

Paraguay v Uruguay

Uruguay went down a man and still managed to score two unanswered goals to win the macth 3-1. Pretty fair amount of opportunities for both sides throughtout the game and actually overall a pretty entertaining match.

Later today:

Mexico vs Brasil

JasonF

OK -- at about 6 minutes into the second half of the Brazil-Mexico match, Brazil knocked the ball into Mexico's goal, but it didn't count. I'm watching on Univision and don't speak a word of Spanish. Anyone know what happened?

Copenhagen

They called a phantom foul on Brasil claming a push from behind.

JasonF
07-18-04, 11:09 PM
Thanks, Copenhagen.

Copenhagen
07-18-04, 11:24 PM
Well that was a dominant performace by Brasil, easily winning the game 4-0 over Mexico. Adriano added two more goals to his total giving him the tourney lead. Oliviera came in for Fabiano in the second and got his first goal of the tourney from really pretty pass from Adriano. Next up Uruguay on Wednesday in the semifinals. In the other semifinal match Argentina will face Columbia.

He is one of the few players on the Argentina national team that I don't feel bad about rooting for.

Copenhagen
07-20-04, 10:41 PM
Tevez scoring in the 33rd

Columbia looking like a 3rd division club team

And Chrstian Gonzalez shoudl have gotten at the very least a yellow and probably deserved a red when he made a first like he was about to hit Murillo early in the first.

I'm sorry but Brazil played that first game with less heart than I have ever seen a national side play. Had it not been for that missed goal by uruguay they would have lost that game. And what the hell is with the announcers saying that Kleberson was the best player of the last game for Brasil and the best for the first half today. I seriously need to get ahold on whatever they are smoking.

I feel bad for both Columbia and Uruguay having to travel up to Cusco for the third place match. Parriera was right is saying how little importance a match like that is, expecially when they have it take place some place that high. I think Columbia will prevail there as Uruguay has historically placed less than stellar in altitude.

As for the final Argentina goes for their 15th Copa America title, while Brasil will be playing for thier 7th. I give the slight edge to Argentina with their talent at midfield and backline, but hope Brasil pulls it out.

Snowflakes
07-22-04, 10:29 AM
yeah i agree brazil did not play there game...
im back in brazil so im not hearing those guys from univision...
imo adriano was by far the best in the field... he just goes everywhere fighting for the ball...
it was a veryyy touch match....
uruguay kept pounding brazil... they could have ended the match in several moments... they never did and ended up losing...
too bad....
but i guess that if u dont score u cant win...

I guess everybody got the final matchup that they were hoping for: Argentina vs Brazil.

Should be a good game.

Copenhagen
07-24-04, 10:49 PM
Uruguay downs Columbia in Cusco 2-1. Columbia came out flat and Urugay countered effectively to score the first goal inside the 5 minute mark. After Columbia tied it on the PK, Uruguay just came right back down and re-took the lead. I had orginally thought that the altitude would affect Uruguay more, but obviously the opposite was true tonight. Perea did have a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 44th minute but it sailed just left of the goal.

Just about 16 hrs until La Gran Final :)

Snowflakes

I wanted to see the penalty shots at the end of the match between Colombia and Uruguay.... didnt happen but oh well...

Yup its today the final match.
Argentina up with their "A" team Brazil with their "B".
Argentina most likely to win but....

...u never know...

lets see if adriano can keep scoring and julio cesar can keep the goal safe!

Snowflakes
07-25-04, 04:53 PM
Argentina is dominating the match. However Brazil was able to make a goal with Luisao, heh the one responsible for the pk, at the last minute of the first half....

This is gonna lead into a very interesting second half...

Edit: Cris and Luisao mix-up!

Copenhagen
07-25-04, 06:16 PM
What a comeback score by Adriano to send the match to penalties. And then to see Julio Cesar block the first PK and then see them sky the second I knew it was over. Congrats to the team for securing the 8th Copa America trophy.

Hopefully Luisao is okay after taking that knock to the head. It look pretty bad on replay as you could see his body go limp before he hit the ground. Speaking if Luisao, Snowflakes, he was the one who scored the goal and cause the PK in the first. Cris subbed in for him late in the second half.

Pretty nice to know that a B team can run with virtually a full Argentine squad. We'll see if any get recalled for qualifiers.

Snowflakes
07-25-04, 06:28 PM
I guess the game only ends when the ref blows the whistle....
That was just amazing Adriano's goal, the last second of the match.....

Julio Cesar was briliant.
Argentina just kinda lost it when they took that goal at the last minute....

Snowflakes
07-25-04, 06:33 PM
and Adriano... he didnt kick like once to the goal during the whole match.... but if you get him a ball inside the goalie area, heh thats what happens....
