Not sure if this has been posted yet but I found at http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?r=0&s=1&c=4271&n=1&burl= that this great film is finally getting a special edition release with a ton of features including a feature length documentary.

Here is a list of some of the features from hmv.co.au

Nice post, Daz655321... and welcome to the forums!

This set looks great... looks like it's goodbye to my vanilla disc when August comes around, then!

I am going to have to pick this up. Probably wait for some reviews on it, but as marty said, very tempting indeed!

In the UK, Second Sight is set to release a 3-disc set of 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' in June with most of the extras from the R4 set, deleted scenes, the director's cut PLUS the original theatrical version.

I'm soooo all over this release.

I've thought about picking up the Criterion at some point, but I'll just wait for this instead!

For some reason when I attempt to link to both of your links I don't see any PIcnic at Hanging Rock references. And the hmv.co.au link just shows some dude on a dirt bike. What's up with this...I want to see the DVD specs???

Not surprised; you're looking at a four year old post. You'll find those specs here (http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=2811), though that comparison obviously doesn't include the upcoming UK R2, for which you'll find a fuller description here (http://filmjournal.net/john/2008/04/17/showing-soon-picnic-at-hanging-rock-the-bill-douglas-trilogy-and-bond-is-back/).

I am intrigued by this because the theatrical release has more material, particularly before the Disappearance event that "explains' more than the cut-back director's cut. In a movie already cryptic, to have the Weir, the director, delete scenes doesn't make sense to me. Yes, I grant his artistic perogative but the movie is so much more interesting in the full theatrical version.

Sorry for the digression off-topic of this thread.

i'll disagree. I think the removed scenes work better, especially in the second half where some momentum is lost in the original version. Also, the lack of explanation works better in this particular film.

Well this will be the third time I buy this movie, but I will definitely be picking this up! One of my favorite movies.

DO NOT BUY the R4 UMBRELA edition-they made a very deluxe edition-and then made it is 4:3 letterbox,(1.66) EVEN thought it says "16x9 enhanced" on box and specs

talk about fumbling and dropping the ball.

As of this moment the German KINOWELT is the best out there according to me.................and DVDBeaver

I dont know what to do re buying the new R2-sounds great
but watch Criterion will somehow out do them, and Ill it regret buying it.
Now if someone would restore WALKABOUT

umbrella re-released the same edition with a 16*9 transfer (that's better than the r2 kinwelt, less edge enhancement). If you get it now, you should get the 16*9 one.

are you SURE? I wrote them and they said 'sorry for the printing error' but
it would cost too much to re-transfer and press all new copies-but that was a couple years ago

Im happy with the KINOWELT but the SECOND SIGHT could trump them all, unless Criterion jumps in (rumored-after 3 million requests) in which ALL bets are off.

I have the anamorphic Umbrella Entertainment disc and can vouch for its existence. It is absolutely the best version I've seen (including Criterion and Kinowelt).

should add the new umbrella also has 5.1 sound rather than the 2.0 on the previous release. Having said that, the best 5.1 mix is still the criterion's for dynamic range. but the umbrella dvd is still quite competent sound wise.
