Interesting article on ESPN about the Yankees and possible tampering.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1833093

(only part of the article, as the rest of goes off on a tangent)

NEW YORK -- George Steinbrenner's interest in Randy Johnson could end up costing him.

The commissioner's office said Thursday it was reviewing remarks the New York Yankees owner made about the Arizona Diamondbacks ace this week to see if there was any tampering that could result in a fine.

"We are looking into it," spokesman Matt Gould said. "It involves talking about someone under contract to another team."

Steinbrenner has long admired Johnson, going back to when the Big Unit helped Seattle beat the Yankees in the 1995 AL playoffs. Johnson then won three games against the Yankees in the 2001 World Series, pitching the Diamondbacks to the championship.

With the July 31 trade deadline approaching and the Yankees possibly looking to add another starting pitcher, Steinbrenner reiterated Wednesday that he liked the Big Unit.

"God, who wouldn't love to have Randy Johnson?" Steinbrenner told Sporting News Radio. "He's a dominator and we'd love to have him. Anybody would love to have him, but I also know that (Diamondbacks owner) Jerry Colangelo is not going to give him away. We'll have to see what happens as the deadline gets closer. We'll see.

"We will try and make a move somewhere along the line here. We are working on it feverishly," he said. "We are not going to mention any names, but we're looking. You can never have enough pitching."

Johnson has veto power over any deal and the Diamondbacks have repeatedly said they would not trade the five-time Cy Young Award winner.

Last month when New York played at Arizona, the 40-year-old lefty said he had not pondered whether he'd accept a trade to the Yankees.

"Right now, I've not been approached by either team," Johnson said at the time. "It's kind of pointless."

Johnson is in the first year of a $33 million, two-year contract extension. After having surgery on his right knee last year, he has been impressive this season

Early-season slump a faded memory, the guy is in myth-making mode again: Sick catch in the 12th? How about that beat-up face?

Yes, his slump is gone. But he's still only hitting .272/13/40! That is NOT myth-making!!!

With all of the media sucking Jeter off again, A-Rod's going to get hella jealous.

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday fired manager Bob Brenley in a move that was anticipated after weeks of poor performances by the team.

The Diamondbacks won the last two games against the San Diego Padres but suffered an 11-game losing streak prior to those wins.

"This is never an easy decision to make, particularly with someone as well-liked and respected as Bob," said Jerry Colangelo, the team's chairman and chief executive.

Everyone knew it was coming. I think they waited to do it a day because they won that game on Thursday.

It's too bad really. I hate this modern era of sports where the coach is blamed. He can't help it that his team gets injured and is not playing up to expectations.

I wonder who is taking over. Robin Yount has expressed his desire not to manage. That leaves Al Pedrique who ran the AAA team the past few season, who was promoted to 3B coach this season.

I wish. There's no way Gracie is going to just jump right into a professional managing career. He'd have to do a few years of minor league managing before they'd even consider that.

Lucky for us AZ D-backs fans, we get to hear him on a nightly basis, since he's the color guy for the TV broadcasts. He's pretty damn funny in the things he says.

The cubs have had all their runs on nothing but terrible plays by the sox.. Gload with another miss, Timo with a whiff in the outifled, and another.. Good god.

:( In honor of this sad occasion, we should sit back and share our favorite Cesar Crespo moments.

Remember that time Ortiz was up in a critical situation and Crespo said "Go get em!!!"? A true inspiration.

Or that time Manny hit a long HR. Crespo was in the dugout clapping. When Manny sat down, there was Cresp. "Nice hit!!", said Crespo. A class act all the way.

Funny stuff on one of the Sox boards:

"RHP Jaret Wright's two-seam fastball is exploding, moving six to eight inches. "
(Updated: 06/21/2004)
CBS Sportline

A Google search of Arroyo and "exploding fastball" returned no hits. Is that significant?

Its certainly ironic, since Arroyo's fastball usually results in tons of hits.

Another great trade scenario from the folks at the red sox board.

Offer Nomar, Lowe and a minor-leaguer to the Diamondbacks for Randy Johnson.

Offer Arroyo, Bellhorn and Gabe Kapler to the Rangers for Alfonso Soriano.

Offer Ramiro Mendoza, Keith Millar and Byung-Hyun Kim to the Mariners for Olerud and Hasegawa.

Obtaining Johnson is obvious. Getting Soriano would add some offensive juice to the Sox’s offensive. Defensive-wise, you get Pokey back at SS plus Soriano at 2nd base.

As for your friend, I wouldnt think any less of you if you decided to smother him with a pillow and bury him in a shallow grave. And if you do it on the South Shore, I might get on the jury! :)

Can anyone confirm that this is in todays NY Daily News?

"I turned back around to go to my seat and everyone was on their cell phones," Silva said. "They were all saying the same thing, 'Jeter just landed on me.'"
The acrobatic shortstop wasn't the only casualty. His spikes clipped Richard Zarza in the head and shoulder. Then someone swiped Jeter's cap.
"People were saying to look for his cap, and I thought they were talking about his tooth," Richard Zarza said. "I can't believe someone would grab his cap."
The guilty party, naturally, is a Red Sox fan: Connecticut electrical contractor David Ash, 33.
"Being a Red Sox fan among Yankee fans, I'm looking down like a sad sack while everyone else is looking up and cheering. That's when I spotted the cap. I could have robbed a bank at that point. It was on the ground."
Ash said he slipped the cap into his shirt and played innocent as Jeter and fans around him looked for it. "I wasn't about to flash it around with 56,000 Yankee fans surrounding me," he said.
His plan? "I'm thinking of bringing it up to Fenway [Park] and getting the curse reversed," he said, laughing.
