''It's a disgrace to baseball if he's not in the All-Star game,'' Phillies manager Larry Bowa said.

Jim Thome is currently 4th in Allstar balloting for first basemen. He is behind #1 Albert Pujols, #2 Jeff Bagwell, and #3 Sean Casey. Lets take a look shall we?

...............PUJOLS.....BAGWELL....CASEY........THOME
Votes.......1.5 M........1.2M.......~700t .......~600t
Avg..........300...........275...........352...........308
HR............20............11..............15.............27
RBI...........52............38............ 54..............57
Slug.........596...........457...........606...........708

Thome:
#1 in MLB in HR
#2 in MLB SLG %
#4 in NL RBI
#15 in BA (Only Casey is above him)

Also:
A .421 on-base percentage (fifth in NL) and 44 extra-base hits (leads NL).

Add to that the total class act that Thome is and I am confused what the morons out there are thinking?

He'll get picked by McKeon. Have no doubt about that. But you are right, the vast majority of fans that vote are morons.

I'm a little embarrassed that I forgot about Thome when I filled out my 25 ballots. :o I voted for Pujols.

Based upon the last ballot update before starters are announced, Thome is clearly not the only guy screwed by a long shot.

AL

Leader
1B - Giambi - Ortiz, Konerko, Harvey, Hatteberg, Hafner
2B - Soriano
3B - A. Rodriguez - Blalock
SS - Jeter - Young, Guillen, Tejada
OF - Guerrero
OF - Ramirez
OF - Matsui - Mora, Lawton, Crawford, Ford, Sheffield, anyone
C - I. Rodriguez

NL

Leader
1B - Pujols - Thome, Casey, Helton, Overbay
2B - Kent
3B - Rolen
SS - Renteria/Everett - Jack Wilson
OF - Bonds
OF - Griffey - see next
OF - Sosa - Bautista, Berkman, Finley, Abreau, Cabrera, Wilson, Drew, Giles, Dunn, Alou
C - Piazza - Estrada, LoDuca, Kendall, a catcher

In fact, with all due respect to Thome, his looks much less criminal than many of these. But I agree that he should be there.

People actually are supposed to vote for the player with the best stats? :hscratch:

Actually, the official rule of thumb since '87 is "whomever has the most expensive baseball card."

I don't think the fans are stupid in this case, it's just that there are a lot of good first basemen in the NL. Lyle Overbay has been the best offensive player on the Brewers and he probably won't make the All-Star team. The same thing goes for Derrek Lee.

Sorry, but the guy who led the league in HR last year and is leading this year should be on the All Star team. And its not even the fact that Pujols is ahead but that he has TWICE as many votes as Thome.

The Phillies have admitted that they don't do some of the things other clubs do like hiring voters. They also don't run a campaign for specific players but lobby for the whole club.

but he will get screwed out of the starting job

I think chrisih8u, as an impartial observer, will agree when I say that Thome's case is the model of justice when you consider that the AL RBI leader, among the top in HRs, and on a pace for nearly 60 doubles, isn't even on the ballot at 1B.

No justice, no peace!

when it comes down to it.. the all star game is nothing more than an exhibition for the fans..
giving the fans a chance to see the players they like watching, compete with each other..

sure, its a popularity contest.. but in the case of the all star game.. that really isnt a bad thing most of the time

if your someone that truely *earned* a spot, and get left out.. it sucks for you..

but the fans want to be entertained

You seem to be making two different points. Of course he is going to be on the All-Star team, that is pretty obvious. He is just not going to be the starter. It's not like all of the voting was done today and the fans knew all along what their stats would be. Voting for the All-Star game is a long process and I imagine Cardinal fans would be more motivated to vote because they probably have the best fans in baseball.

i have no problem at all with pujols being ahead of thome

Actually, Bagwell is the only guy who shouldn't be in that group. Of course, Thome should take the spot, but Sean Casey has plenty of right to be right up there with him.

And Bagwell is getting a boost from increased attendance at Minute Maid and the hometown campaign.

It's nothing more than a popularity contest. The fans vote for who they want to see. Sometimes they get it right and pick the player who deserves it. Sometimes they don't. It doesn't matter to me though, I don't particularly like all-star games. They're usually pretty boring.

The little guy - he makes me laugh.

Thome will make the team as a reserve, as will Casey.

And Jack Wilson will, too - who else are they going to put on the All-Star team from Pittsburgh?

Mesa is a possibility, but J. Wilson doesn't have an equal at SS this year. If the Pirates have one representative, it's him. If McKeon only takes 2 SS, he has to be one.

Nope. My 3, 4, 5, ... , 21, 22, and 23 foot jumper needs a little more work first.

Although I'm pretty sure I can take Oliver Miller on the dribble drive.

The voting has always been radiculos. Someone always gets screwed out of an invite because the fans vote in someone undeserving. It sucks, but what can you do.

Hey, what about Ensberg having more votes than Lowell? :)

Yes, the same Ensberg that now has fewer home runs than Rafael Belliard.

That will never work.

JT Snow won't be around to yank him out of the way when he runs to get the bat in the middle of the play.

What, no love for Jose Mesa? :)

Just had to say that again to make sure I'm not high or something. I mean Jose Mesa good? What is this, 1995?

Hey, did anyone attend a Phillies game when there was All-Star balloting? I really think the Phillies must have done something wrong for Thome not to have any votes. It's not even like their attendance is poor; it's #4 in the league I believe. There have been fans saying the ushers did a poor job of handing out and collecting ballots.

Fan ballots are asinine. Look no further than Nomar's current status on the ballots. It's 99% popularity/name recognition.

As a Phillies fan I'd love to se Thome start, but I'm not worried that he will not be on that team because we all know he will be.

they dont do a poor job of handing out ballots.

they almost dont hand out ballots at all.

there is 1 announcement sometime during the game to
"dont forget to vote for your favorite
phillie for the all star game".
then i see an usher hand out a few ballots to a couple rows or so.

but almost everyone just looks at it and puts it down.

every isle has an usher and every usher
has a handful of these things either on them or at the end of their isle were they stand.

and there are plenty of boxes around the stadium to put your ballots into.

i just dont think phillie fans really have any interest in filling these things out.
it's just not a big deal here as far as i can tell.

as for the comment on st louis being the best fans.
what is the defintion of a good fan?
if it's blind loyalty year after year
no matter if the team wins or loses.
the Stepford Fans if you will.
then ye i guess they are good fans.

the astros fans must be the best because they have a player at every position near the top of the balloting,
including 1 at the top.

...My sentiment exactly..Hell at least Pujolz is deserving, Giambi doesnt even deserve to be an all-star in my opinion. And before the Yankee fans say it, I dont think Nomar does either.

I'm surprised Barry Larkin isn't first in votes in the SS catagory.

Jack and Craig both deserve to make the team from the Pirates.

Most fans who vote are idiots.
