Rotten Tomatoes will be part of IGN

Read it and weep

On the game side this now gives IGN a Gamerankings-like system for pools of reviews from over the net since RT started doing that last year. This basically means IGN now has what Gamespot has with Gamerankings, although not as big (yet).

I thought IGN and Gamespot merged already too. Or am I thinking of something else? IGN is taking over the universe.

IGN (originally stood for Imagine Games Network) was launched as part of Imagine Media, who are still around (although now under the Future brand). Eventually, the site was spun off as Snowball Entertainment and Imagine launched DailyRadar.com under the umbrella of the UGO Network.

So what does IGN stand for, now? I thought they were still owned by Imagine.

Ah the good old days. I remember when IGN was just:

N64.com
PSXpower.com
Saturnworld.com

And before DailyRadar.com, Imagine had the late great:

Next-Generation.com

They haven't been owned by Imagine since '99. They were spun off as an independent brand, and subsequently taken public (they were traded on the NASDAQ for a while). When the dot com bubble burst, they were bought by investors and turned private. As for the name, it doesn't really stand for anything anymore. They ditched the Snowball corporate moniker and went with "IGN Entertainment" a couple years back. When they merged with Gamespy earlier this year, they took the "IGN/Gamespy" mark, but, as the RottenTomatoes press release states, they are now reverting back to IGN Entertainment as their official corporate name.

It's supposed to mean "Intelligent Gamer Network" but they don't focus just on games anymore.

Great, so I suppose this means we can look forward to clicking on a review page at RT and seeing a big ad with the phrase "Continue to Gigli reviews" and whatnot.
