Ode to Rivero I suppose, but I just saw "At Close Range" and was really amazed at what a powerful movie that was. It was more a Christopher Walken performance piece in which he was great, but early Sean Penn was raw as well.
Anyway, many will argue with me, but I didn't think "Mystic River" was his best performance even though he stole the Oscar from Bill...but that is another story.
So which do you think is his best performance?

Of the movies I've seen with him, I think he was incredible in 21 Grams. I just saw Mystic River last night, and although he was great in it too, I thought he had a deeper role in 21 Grams, and he portrayed more emotion in 21 than Mystic River. One thing that might have also made me not like Mystic River as much was that damn score. I wish there was an option where you can shut it off.

At Close Range. The final scene alone is testament to Penn's gift.

He's great in all those films, but I think it's a toss up between:
Dead Man Walking and Sweet and Lowdown.

Hey scott1598, you've got Spyware on your machine. Unless you intentionally attached the link to "gift" in Norm's post.

he gave a pulse pounding powerful performance in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, reflected in his Thomas Jefferson speech:
"So what Jefferson was saying is that, we left England because they were bogus, and if we didn't make rules for ourselves, we would be bogus too."

I went with 21 grams, after seriously considering Carlito's Way and, believe it or not, Bad Boys.

I was going to mention that Bad Boys (1983) and Colors were missing from the poll, but I see several others have referenced the former.
