Why was Pirates of Caribbean a huge blockbuster?

It is funny a movie based on a Disney Land theme park ride could make so much money.

Depp was great but I thought it was a average flick and it was not one of the best movies from 2003.

It easily could have flown under the radar like A League of Extraordinary Gentleman and you might think I am crazy but League was a better movie than Pirates.

Johnny Depp should've won the Oscar.

Because a lot of people paid to go see it Seriously it was a fun movie w/ a good plot and a lot of people enjoyed it. Depp is a great actor in a good role for him. And I do think you're crazy for thinking LEG is a better movie but that's JMO.

It was big blockbuster because it made a load of $$$. And that you think A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, more power to you. But I thought it stunk up the silver screen, except the FX.

Solid story, action scenes that kept you interested, and good acting. And not as much "cheese factor" as a lot of movies out there.

I saw it opening weekend and I didn't think much of it. I too am baffled by how much money it made.

Because it had something for everyone, it was a very good movie, and word of mouth was phenominal.

You know, you could ask that question of any movie ...."Why was/wasn't %^$#$% a hit?".

Because enough people did/didn't want to see it.

How about some specific criticism as to exactly what was wrong with it instead of generic statements like "it was average" and "league was better."

The same one that supplies the voters who gave the Oscar to Sean Penn for screaming "Is that my daughter in there???" for five minutes.

Yeah, if my daughter was murdered I would have only asked once, and quietly walked away with a smile on my face.

Exactly. POTC made $300 mil because word of mouth was great and people went to see it multiple times. If the majority of people thought it sucked it would have tanked after the first weekend. Today's marketing machines can pretty much guarantee big openings regardless, but if people spread the bad word, you have no legs and get performances like Hulk and Riddick. Plain and simple.

I could care less about the oscar...they were both phenomenally played roles. With regards to POTC, it was just very popular. I too thought it to be rather blah, with an absolutely amazing performance by Depp, a really good pirate by Geoffrey Rush, and two horribly boring, uninteresting, would you get off the damn screen and get the pirates back performances by Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. If anything it's a mediocre movie with a fairly blah storyline, but some great visuals and an exceptional lead. While it doesn't get my kicks going cause of those other things, you gotta give credit where credit is due. What it did right, it did VERY right. And as a family adventure flick, I can see why such a large audience liked it.

I liked it a lot, of course. But it was a blockbuster for the same reason that most are - it was accessible without being condescending to its audience, and it had a wide appeal across many different audience demographics.

I feel the same about "Shrek 2", but to each his own. I thought "Pirates" was one of the better summer movies in years. For me, it had everything. I helped spread the word. And I even saw it in the theater three times. Something I never do.

Because it's from the greatest producer of all-time.

Because of Johnny, a great story, Johnny, great action, Johnny, beautiful people, Johnny, great comedy, and Johnny. Johnny has a way of making any movie interesting. I can't imagine how this movie would have turned out if any other actor played Capt. Jack Sparrow. It still probably would have been successfull, but I doubt it would have been as entertaining.
