Is Will Ferrell the biggest selling comedy ticket these days?
I am a pretty big Will Ferrell fan, loving everything from Night at the Roxbury to Old School and his role in The Ladies Man.
His new movie, Anchorman, looks hysterical. Is it too much to say that he is above Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler etc as the biggest selling comedy ticket today? I anticipate Anchorman doing ridiculously well at the box-office, especially since Old School is considered a hilarious comedy in a good number of movie circles.

Personally, I think he's much better than Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler - he's got a natural talent for being funny and he doesn't always have to go over the top to do it.
As far as the biggest comedy ticket goes, I'm just not sure although I would like to think so.

Elf was awesome. I don't think Anchorman will do as well, since Elf was a good family christmas movie, and there is no WAY I'm taking my kids to go see Anchorman.
I'll definitely be there, though. I love Will Ferrell, and I'm still hoping to see Celebrity Jeopardy: The Motion Picture!

No way!
Nothing against Will as I really like him too and the others, but Jim Carrey has and will continue to draw the biggest box offices bar none, now and in the future. "Bruce Almighty" just proved that and handily toppled "Elf" and later down "Lemony Snicket" or whatever that one is. His drama and offbeats continually win him more and more fans and he is as charming as ever and picks the right scripts that suit him.

Ferrell is great, but it's way too early to say he's a bigger star than Carrey, Sandler, Murphy. Carrey is definately king...Bruce Almighty made 240 million pretty much based solely on it being a Jim Carrey movie. And that success he's done many a time through out his career. While Will could be that big, one mega hit like Elf and a moderate but very popular success in Old School is hardly enough to judge hm king. When he can prove he has the durable, repeatable success of an Adam Sandler, who pretty much guarentees a hundred million dollar gross for all of his movies, then yeah he'll be a comedy titan. Let's see how anchorman does, that'll be a good judge. I think he will be in their league...but it's early to say for sure.

I think word of mouth, Morgan Freeman and a religious theme greatly helped the success of Bruce Almighty. I believe you are contributing too much of the success to Jim Carrey.

I'm trying to remember the last Jim Carrey movie that I thought was actually funny. Maybe Liar Liar , and that came out in what 1996?

Don't tell me you didn't laugh at porno password or the basketball game with Carrey vs. Jack Black.

I saw the trailer for Anchorman yesterday and maybe I was in the wrong state of mind for it, I don't know, but it looked terrible to me. Carrey and Sandler have both shown their durability and have movie after funny movie to their credit; I think if anyone is reaching that status I agree that it's Ben Stiller, not Farrell.

Ferrell's about 2/3 hits away from being one of the best. The difference between him and some of the other stars mentioned is that his stock is raising whereas most of the other guys mentioned (except maybe Stiller) have probably already reached there peak and are either declining in stock or staying where they are.
