Ideas and Hosts for the Groucho's Movie Challenge threads

What is Groucho’s Movie Challenge? Its mission is simple: let us all, as a forum, work to seek out films that might otherwise slip our radar. Each week, anybody who wants to participate will see a film within the guidelines, and return back to the forum to report on the film they saw. It’s easy, it’s fun, and everybody can participate. It’s not a trivia contest…it’s not a game…it’s merely a way we can all be exposed to new avenues of film appreciation…or at the very least see a good flick or two.

The films should usually be something you haven't seen before, or haven't seen for a good while, if possible. Films should usually be feature length (over 60 minutes) unless the challenge states otherwise.

--------------------------

I decided to compile the various suggestions for challenges into one thread, and I will try to keep this thread updated with all weeks. If anyone has new suggestions, or wants to talk about the challenge in general instead of individual weeks, this is the place.

Here are some suggestions from previous threads:
from Giles in week 1
A western, a musical, an feature length animated film, an 80's T&A comedy (these were suggested for individual posters, but would work well for all.)

from Scot1458 in week 2
Film Noir (real noir, not The Usual Suspects or Chinatown)
Silent Films (everybody can dig Phantom of the Opera)
Special Historic Films (like The Jazz Singer, Birth of a Nation)
a Horror or Sci-Fi movie without CGI

from Suprmallet in week 2
great pairings (Abbot and Costello, Bogart and Bacall, even something like Herzog and Kinski)

from yours truly in week 3
specific genres, countries, actors or directors
Japanese live-action, Anime, French, etc., or at least go with Asian, European, Indian, etc.
great directors: Kurosawa, Wilder, Hitchcock, Fellini, etc.
standard genres (western, chick-flick, slasher, etc.) or more esoteric ones like film-noir or Asian action films (like Hard Boiled, etc.)
film styles, such as Anime, independent, shorts, etc.
Old comedians: Chaplin, Marx Bros., Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, Mae West, W.C. Fields, etc.
classic actors of old, Oscar-winning films, movies from the Top 100 (or Bottom 250) at IMDB, etc.

from wmansir in week 3
A movie with no star power. The movie cannot have anyone in it that the you recognize (either by name or face), to your knowledge before viewing. Good sources for this would be indie, foreign, old movies, or B-movies. You could also include the director to make it more challenging, or just limit it to actors for an easier challenge.

from sundog in week 3
Debut films, from any facet of the production, be it actor, director, editor, cinematographer, even producer.

from Nick Danger in week 5
the top 100 lists from Roger Ebert, Tim Dirks, AFI, or BFI

from MrN in week 9
A variation on the foreign-language challenge - watch a film from a country (or made in a language) that you've never watched a film from.

--------------------------

This thread would also be a good place to say that you want to guest host for the challenges, if Groucho wants a break.

--------------------------

Missed a previous version of the Movie Challenge? It’s never too late to play:

Call a random person from the phone book and ask them what their favorite movie is... then watch it.

-or-

Any 'Clint Howard' movie.

-or-

A 'G' rated film from 1980-1985 that you've never seen before.

I've had a hard time getting the energy to put these up. A couple times recently I've had some ideas, but I was beaten to the punch by somebody else.

I still think it's a fun idea...even more fun if somebody else is managing the challenge.

Alright then I nominate myself and my idea is "Watch a movie that Pants doesn't hate"

Good luck.

Or perhaps "Rival 11 Week"

Just tell us a lot about a movie you havent seen.

Here's an odd but fruitful idea:

Kevin Bacon One-Degree-of-Separation Movie Week

Select a movie from Kevin Bacon on IMDB.

Select a co-star from that movie

Select one of their movies to watch.

Example: Selecting A Few Good Men will not only yield Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore flicks but, if you select Noah Wylie, you can watch Donnie Darko. Or select JT Walsh and you have Good Morning, Vietnam.

This sounds like a fun challenge.

I am willing to be a guest host again (I did the Cannes week).

some of my ideas for challenges...

Movie weeks for various countries or languages (Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Italian etc)

Movies from decades 30s, 40s, 50s etc. Or even individual years.

More genre weeks (classic horror, cheesey 50s scifi, etc.)

I really like TomOpus' Kevin Bacon idea. He should host next week or someone should host with his idea.

If TomOpus doesn't want to post the challenge I would be willing to do it.
