I'll be the first then to post my theater pics. Not much has changed since the last thread minus a butload of new DVDs and a little eye candy.

To the two guys above with projectors, how is the picture quality? I've never seen a game/movie/show running on a projector but in the next year I'm going to be interested in purchasing an HDTV and if a projector is the way to go, that would be nice to have such a large screen!

Plus, according to the Wall Street Journal (by way of Slashdot), Sony has fixed one of the biggest problems with projectors! (http://online.wsj.com/article_email/0,,SB108742977261939595-IRjg4Nllal3nZyva3qHbqyCm4,00.html)

steebo777

Yes, if you have the ambient light control for a room, and the throw distance for it, a front projector is the only way to go. The image is crystal clear (especially if you want to drop a little more bank and pick up a second-gen DLP projector over an LCD). HDTV signals look stunning on it, and games (especially if you're running a component out from the system) are amazing. Watching a movie or playing Mario Kart on a 9.5 foot screen is like nothing else in your home :)

And for that link to Sony's 'screen fixing problem', there has never been a big issue with it as long as you got a grey screen (like the Stewart FireHawk series). It is an interesting idea to use a black screen though. Forewarning to you, it is easy to spend more on the screen than the actual projector (for instance my screen retails for about $4k, while the projector retails for about $2k). You don't have to spend more on a screen, it's all just personal preference on how good you want that image.

For all projector info, go over to Projector Central (http://www.projectorcentral.com) for all of your needs.

1.)All the work was done myself with help from my father in law and a friend. Except for carpeting which I paid to have installed

2.) I got the room built, painted and ready to watch in like 3 months of work mainly on weekends and some things in the evening after work.

3.) Yep, that's an infocus X1

I moved into a new house recently, and since the handyman was here anyway, I had him construct a custom shelf to hold my DVD's and laserdiscs.

The Definitive Collection LD boxed set includes a bunch of trailers for the films, including an early trailer for RotJ with the "Revenge" title.

It's possible/probable that this trailer will also be on the upcoming DVD set.

OK I have never tried to post a picture because I have no web page. Let's see if this works. I have a Samsung 50" DLP with a Sony STR-DE 545 DTS receiver. The DVD Player is a Momitsu region free player with DVI output. The rest is a Dish Network DVR and a Toshiba VCR which is not used anymore.

Well the picture did not post. Is there a free image hosting web page out there? Or one that is relatively cheap?

We might get some type of curtains for it at some point, but the wife likes a little light most of the time, and usually even at night, we have that lamp in the corner turned on dim.

And that wall with the DVD racks is just BEGGIN' for some movie posters! :)

I'm not really a movie poster kind of guy, and since this is also the living room (we're in an apartment), and I'm married to an interior designer, this isn't really an option. :) She has agreed that when we get a house in a few years, I do get my own dedicated room and she won't complain about how that looks. Personally, I like the minimalist feel our room has.

I'll also be taking a few new pictures in the coming weeks. My surround sound is in shipping now (Onkyo HTS760).

Steebo777Dude... you need to give me that Super Famicom. Damn does that bring back some memories.

Haha No chance that and the Dreamcast have to probably be my two most played systems. So many classics on both of them. Super Metroid, Zelda 3, Starwing (Starfox), Super Turrican 2, Super Mario World 1/2, Super Mario AllStars, Super Pang ect ect ect Some of the best gaming ever.

I have to say I was suprised I didn't see any retro gaming love in other people set-up's, or maybe they just didn't take a piccy of it. ;)

edit - CD cases on the woofer are cases only, I like to keep my music in wallets as I take parts of my collection with me sometimes unlike movies ect. Just wondering though if leaving actual CD's or DVD's next to speakers like that can have any ill effects?

Yeah I actually have sold all of my unused gaming systems in the past to get new ones. I admit I'd like to have kept some of them, but it allowed me to own nearly every US system released. Now I'm just rocking a GameCube, PS2 and GBASP.

Not sure about Photo Bucket but I know Image Shack automatically creates a thumbnail image one can link to in addition to the full size. That might decrease load times for this thread and allow viewers to pick and choose which images they wish to click on to view full size.

The double-box is teh Japanese Mononoke Hime/Princess Mononoke.
Most of the Ghibli/Miyazaki-stuff came with one dvd or another, except for the Totoro diorama calendar, the alarm clock and the plushies.

Because my digital camera is on the fritz, I've been rendering my HT room. If you look at the very last photo, that was how it actually looked last year before I bought the IKEA shelves. The first four images are the renders - notice the Now Showing display! I created that using 3ds max.

Artman
07-12-04, 07:18 PM
Wow Rocky those look great! Are you doing 3D for a living?

I am needing to learn Maya in a bad way (to get a job)... any tips?

I hope to post some pics soon, need a camera first...

RockyMtnBri
07-12-04, 08:00 PM
Artman...

I'm just doing it as a hobby now, but trying to get better and better! I'm using 3ds max 4 to create special objects (like the lamp and the Now Showing) instead of using "canned" ones, but the main renders are done using 3D Home Architect 6! It can accept .3ds files. so I create them in 3ds max, then import them into the library of 3D HA!

Someone I used to work with used Bryce ($79 at Fry's) and she created wonderful fantasy effects. I'm working on real world stuff first to create a base, then I may play around with other concepts.

Njål, I like the limited edition wooden Studio Ghibli DVD player you have. IIRC it was packaged with the R-2 release of "Spirited Away." Do you recall what you paid for that release and do you know how many were released?

Njål

Yes, it came with Spirited Away.
I can't really remember the how much I paid anymore (but the list rrp was Y19800), and while I'm quite sure it was stated how many were made at the time, I can't remember that, either.

Arcade, do all movies look that sharp on your tv?

Arcade
07-23-04, 01:12 AM
Yes. Most all movies look that sharp on my tv. The Momitsu DVD player upconverts all my DVD's to 720P which is the native resolution of the Samsung DLP. Since I run it through the DVI cable the picture stays digital all the way with no analog conversion.
Of course some older DVD's with bad transfers will show their age but 99% of the new stuff looks fantastic. I really like to show movies like Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill, and the new Star Wars on it.

I recently added a HD over the air tuner. My city only has CBS in HD but the picture is nothing short of amazing.

Bear in mind that I'm only home for 2.5 months (summer break) but there was no way in hell I was putting my DVDs in storage. The shelves are in storage, but the DVDs have found homes in DVD boxes from BBV:

I've got the Meijer shelves, too and I cannot reccommend them any more highly. I saw it in the store and thought it looked great and the price tag was nice, too (around $40-$50). Putting it together, it seemed like it was going to be a bust, as it was extremely flimsy. Once everything was set, though, it was very sturdy and looks great against the wall.

I think it's around 300, actually. I've currently got a little over 200 titles and still have three (half) rows that don't have anything on them. And I've got a lot of box sets, too, so it could probably even be a bit over 300. For the price, appearance and quality of the shelves, I don't think you can go wrong here.

The whole thing:

http://www.photodump.com/direct/Maximus/Middle2bigshelves.jpg

This small shelf system sits next to the big case.
http://www.photodump.com/direct/Maximus/Top2mini-shelves.jpg

http://www.photodump.com/direct/Maximus/Bottom3mini-shelves.jpg

And here's my Trek shelf:
http://www.photodump.com/direct/Maximus/Trekshelf.jpg

And then finally my HT setup:
32" Sony WEGA Flatscreen
Pioneer DV-434
Sharp DD4500 mini-shelf DD 5.1 and DTS out system (DTS decoder not included).
http://www.photodump.com/direct/Maximus/TVandstereo.jpg

One of these days, when they become affordable, I'd like to get a ~50" or so flatpanel LCD or plasma screen. Problem is that I only have 43.5" width clearance between the studs there in my enclosure. A 42" plasma would only fit if it didn't have speakers on the sides. So I'm feeling that I'll need to fill back in the wall there and just hang it on the wall.

Surround system was cheap. $250. 40W twin subs, 30W center, left, right, surrounds. Like to get something better in the future.

Custom cover from dvdcoverart.com. I had Ric Easton's montage covers for them, but without dvdcoverart.com up and running, there'd be no way to get the TNG movie covers with SE/CE details, so I just reverted back to the originals.

I may run by Meijer's this week and get the DVD shelf.

For those with the Meijer dvd shelves.....

Do the dvds stick out much? The reason I ask is because from the pictures it looks like the dvds stick out a little from the shelf and I was wondering if the dvds collect much dust.

Also, you wouldn't happen to have the height and length? It looks like the depth is approximately the size of a dvd case.

Thanks!!!

The towers, center and rears are Klipsch Synergy Series - Model #s KSF 8.5 (fronts), KSC 1 (center), and KSB 2.1 (rears). I've had those for about five years. The sub is a two year old Definitive PF15TL+, and it sounds absolutely incredible. Unfortunately they're all powered by a cheap old Sony STR-DE935 receiver. :(

The TV is a Sony KV-36FS320, and the DVD player is an outdated Sony 7700.

They're almost square. 48 1/2" high, 47 1/2" long, 6" deep (actual shelf depth 4 3/4").
The DVD's do stick out a little, but it's negligible. IMO, it makes it easier to pull them out. Take a disc from Meijer's DVD section and try it out on the shelf before you buy it! :)

I recently made myself a new shelf and thought I'd post it. I had made a shelf close to two years ago that was overflowing with DVDs (my games weren't even on it anymore), so I needed to upgrade. While I am not sure I am a fan of out-in-the-open approach, living in a duplex, I have little choice. This is only meant to last until my wife and I get a house as well.

It goes floor to ceiling and has ten shelves total. At capacity it can hold 600 DVDs. I mounted it to the wall (screwed into studs) to insure no tippage or moving (baby in the house). I may have to find some way to block off lower shelves though as once our son is crawling, he may prove to be a disaster to organization. ;)

Sorry for the crappy picture, I took it at night and sized it down considerably.

I have figures and the like that I keep in the package but would never sell. I like how they look in the case...don't know why, just do. So us case-keeper-inners aren't automatically out to flip our wares for a bit of change down the road.

Plus for some reason I have the worst luck with standing figures. They always want to fall down on me. The little bastards. Plus the figures I buy (the DC Animated Uni stuff: Batman: TAS, Justice League, etc) isn't really poseable like the McFarlane stuff. Ok done defending myself now  .

Fairly cheap actually. I'd say altogether, $40. Since I knew this would be temporary, I used cheap wood. However, some putty, some sanding, a little sealant, and it looks very nice. Only close inspection will reveal minor flaws.

I used a stud finder to locate the wall studs. The shelf is wide enough to have screws in two different studs in each of the brace pieces on the back.

It is 8' tall, 3' wide, and 6" deep.

Artman, I got em a Best Buy for $69.95 a piece, pretty pricey but I needed them immediately and luckily they had 2 in stock. They Atlantic and they advertise 360 DVDs in each shelf. NO discs stick over the edge unless I haven't pushed them all the way in (I took these after shifting the shelves so some are prolly hangin a bit). They are great shelves, especially when anchored to the wall.

Here's mine. I just moved into a new apartment at the beginning of the year and had the chance to modify the interior before any furniture was moved in. The walls of the living room/home theater are painted to match the color of the TV cabinet which makes the TV virtually disappear into the wall if the lighting is set properly. I had speakers installed into the walls so I wouldn't have to deal with a lot of wiring running around the floor -- you can see one of the speakers to the left of the tall lamp in the corner. The thing in front of the lamp on the floor is a vertical fan.

The DVD collection is in the second bedroom which I use as an office. The shelving is an Elfa storage system from the Container Store which was installed into the closet of the office. I couldn't get far enough away from the closet to get a complete picture, but you get the idea.

I don't have season 2 of Six Feet Under. The problems are:
1) the fact that the packaging is completely different. They should have kept the size at least. I thought they should have used the design from the "Six Feet Under" book. It slides out, like the "Wild At Heart" dvd that's coming out.

2) the price. If I go to Costco it is $20 cheaper than Best Buy, but then I want to use my Reward Zone card to get the points. So, I said eff it. I'll wait until later down the road and get a discount when I buy two seasons at the same time, steal it or never buy it.

You have NO idea how much you need one. The Wavebird retails at $39.99, but you can get a new one on Amazon for $29.99. I think Electronics Boutique sells pre-owned ones as well. I think they're about 25 bucks.

I have a Wavebird (the Nintendo-made wireless), and it's real sturdy and works as well as a wired controller. Haven't tried any of the third-party wireless controllers, but then, I've never had any luck with third-party peripherals.

edit to add: The Wavebird works on a radio signal, not infrared (like a TV remote), so you can pretty much sit anywhere in your room and use it. Make sure, though, to set the controller and reciever to the same channel (there are 12 channel options). It may also interfere with your wireless phone (as it did mine), but all you have to do is find different channels on the controller & phone that don't interfere.

cheers.

Thanks! I think I estimated about 40 regular cases per section, so 1280 if I filled the whole thing. The very top shelf (you can just see it at the top of the pic) is pretty much empty and the bottom shelf is books, so around 960. There's about 500 or so now and I start to panic when it gets close to 600, so I'm hoping to be good with this setup for as long as I live....here.

went to best buy after seeing this post and found the same shelves marked 69.99 plus a $10 instant rebate. so we grabbed one and headed to the counter only to find that the $10 rebate was apparently left up by mistake. the cashier didn't want to give us the discount but finally did.....i like these shelves a lot and they are definitely worth $60. my only complaint is the placement of the stationary shelf. you either have to have a huge gap of wasted space or use the shelf for something other than dvds as well.

i always recommend the canadian company : www.videogamesplus.com for all your gaming needs, particularly those outside the USA who like to import games... i am in the UK and have used them for more than 2 years, the prices are cheap cheap cheap!... the shipping is too... take a look. GC games usually cost me just over £30 (£15 cheaper than UK issues sometimes) and GBA games just over £20... again £15 cheaper than UK ones... and theres loads of stuff like wavebirds there too... all consoles catered for...

But the movie title is A Few Good Men, not Few Good Men. Although, The Haunting is The Haunting, you should still place it in the H'es and ignore the "The." Why? Who the hell knows.

What's odd to me is that some people will ignore the English articles, "a," "an," and "the" but still file their dvds by foreign language articles such as, "die," "der," "das," "la," "le," "el," and "l'." Examples: filing "Das Boot" under "D" and "L'Avventura" under "L".

Very nice! Where did you get the shelves?

Thanks! They are bookshelves I ordered from a local furniture store, Columbia Oak. I had them take the standard bookshelves from the manufacturer, put a custom stain on it, remove the bullnose from the fixed shelves, and make two extra shelves for each bookshelf.

The bookshelves are in my basement. I keep a dehumidifier running to keep the moisture level low during the summer and autumn months. I'm hoping that in the next year I'll be able to repaint the walls and replace that nasty blue carpet.

Before buying those shelves, I looked online at some of the units made specifically for DVDs. Unfortunately, it seemed that all the big ones needed large feet sticking out the front and sides for balance. I didn't want that because my collection is growing, and I will need additional space in the future. When that time comes, I want the new shelves to be flush against the existing units.

EDIT: BTW, on that side discussion about alphabetizing titles. How do people handle abbreviations, such as "Dr. Zhivago", and acronyms, i.e. "S.W.A.T."?

Zhivago was released theatrically as Doctor Zhivago and appears as Doctor Zhivago on all the DVD cases I've seen so there's no problem there, but if I were to own Dr. Doolittle for example (though I never would), I'd file it under "Dr" rather than "Do" because the title of the theatrical and DVD release is Dr. Doolittle not "Doctor Doolittle." As for S.W.A.T. I'd file it under "S" before "Sa." For exampe, I file D.O.A before Dancer in the Dark, rather than after Distance.

On a side note, I disagree with how dvdaficionado deals with titles that have numbers. It treats each digit distinctly, rather than taking into account the entire number, thus, 2010: The Year We Make Contact appears there before 28 Days Later.

You're right about Doctor Zhivago, oops, I should have used "Dr. Strangelove". But you got the gist of my question. Thanks.

For numbers, I file first by the first digit, and then by their value. So in order, I have: 10, 1941, 1984, 2001, 2010, 40 Days and Nights, 6th Day, 8 mm. 9 1/2 Weeks.

Speaking of arranging DVDs, I just arrange them by category and association (movies in the same series together, sometimes movies with the same star together, etc). I decided long ago that trying to alphabetize would take a lot more effort than it would be worth for me.

It's not odd to me. Most people are not multilingual. If those aren't familiar languages it's a lot easier to find a title under Das rather than Boot on titles like that because otherwise you have to think in a foreign language to find your movie

Well i'll finally take the plunge and post - had to move back home last yr, but it works. Thank God I was able to fit in my room, otherwise i'd go nuts!

32" Sony Trinitron

Sony 330 DVD player
Sony VCR (rarely used, but I run the Gamecube audio thru it)

Also sporting a TEAC reciever (hey I got for cheap, and it works)

I'm planning to upgrade my sound system next yr. :)

My glass door was a casualty from the move (the thing literally exploded), I actually like the open look, but I have to dust every other day it seems...

Here's some of what I have stacked that wasn't visible in my previous post. Note the slim-cases on Tarzan and Emperor's New Groove SE's. (Also on Atlantis but it's loaned out) I did those earlier this yr.
