200 Perfect Pop Songs
This is done on another forum and seems to come off well. I also think that it'll be a fun way for all of us to make one cooperative list instead of tearing through 20+ extensive posts.
How it works: List as many "perfect pop" songs as you like, but no more than 5 at one time (I'm sure that a mere 5 members could fill out the whole list if no cap was set) and don't make a second, third, or fourth+ post unless there are at least 5 others after yr last one. The list begins at 200 and works backwards, so if you are saving up one for the top 10, it would be in yr best interest to list it in the event that it doesn't get on the list at all. We'll consider all songs on the list to be of equal standing with numerals representing the number of slots still available- not that #200 is a lesser song than #1.
Please (!) note that a song does not have to be in heavy radio rotation now or ever to make the list. If a song appeals to a style that was popular at one point, it can make the list (ie - Broadcast to french pop, Magnetic Fields to Burt Bacharach or ABBA, Olivia Tremor Control to the Beatles). "Pop," as both a musical form and a musical phenomenon, is valid. All musical forms are valid, as well, so long as they appeal to pop sensibilities (which is obviously open to interpretation...in other words, my intention). So metal, hip-hop, rock, dub, punk, soul, etc all should, and I imagine will, find a home on this list.
------
200. The Magnetic Fields - "Asleep and Dreaming"
199. Kid Creole and the Coconuts - "I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby"
198. Britney Spears - "Toxic"
197. Olivia Tremor Control - "Hideaway"
196. Beyonce - "Crazy in Love"
