I'm at 810 DVDs right now and I've sold a lot of stuff in that time. I'm guessing I've bought about 1100 DVDs. I'll usually go through my collection and find 3-4 titles I could live without and go and trade those in for 1 DVD I really want. I tell myself I would rather have 1 DVD I really want instead of 3 or 4 minors titles I'll probably never watch.
I have 810 and I am pretty picky. I usually don't buy movies I haven't seen unless it's a director I really like. Sometimes when I go to Best Buy or some place like that and some guy buys every week's new release. Everything from a romantic comedy to a blow em up action flick. The movies are so totally different I would have to think that no person could possibly like all those movies that came out that week. According to IMDB, I've seen 2700+ movies and I own 810. That's only like 1 in every 4 movies I see, I buy. Well, I guess that is a lot....Nevermind.
So, anybody have over a 1000 and can honestly say they like all of their movies?

Over 1600 here. I don't sell them... back in the late 80s and early 90s I sold off a lot of CDs that I wasn't listening to, and didn't think I'd miss. Now in 2004 I've repurchased many of them because I did miss them. I simply decided I wouldn't go down that backstep road again. :)

Have about 1050.
Have watched about 50%.
Like 90% of them.
I have started selling off double-dips, duplicates and OOPs with rumored re-releases. I used to be a hardcore collector, but it started being a money pit. I now use my existing collection to fund future DVD purchases. I sell DVDs, as described above, and use the money to purchase new ones. I usually make money on the deal, i.e. selling an OOP Disney for $30 then buying the new anamorphic special edition for $15.
I have also stopped buying most New Releases. Paying even $15 for a New Release, when it will be less than $10 in 6 months (when I MIGHT get a chance to watch it anyway), just was not worth it.

About 30 to go... I haven't checked my preorder count recently (made a bunch last night) so I might be over the 1000 limit by the time I take all those into consideration. I'm thinking about doing a mass purging when I top it (so far I trim down about a dozen at every 50 bookmark). The problem is looking at the collection critically/realistically enough to actually get rid of some of them ;)

Sorry, let me clarify. Many of the DVDs that I own but have not watched, I originally saw the films in the theater. I have bought some movies that I did not like (hard to pass up a great deal, though this was before I stopped collecting) and have bought others blind that I have not yet watched.
I estimate that I like about 90% of my total collection (+/- 25 DVDs worth of error).

About 800 to go.
I have just under 200 DVDs and I can honestly say that I like all of them.
However, I'm trying to tighten up my collection by only having the "essentials". There are about 30 or so that I've seen a few times and feel that I don't need to see again (even though I like the films).
I can't see myself owning more than 250 DVDs, as I can't think of that many "essential" films.
Plus I have to factor in upcoming HD-DVD titles I want to own - so I need to make space for them. ;)
Not to diss those with really large collections - but won't there be a buttload of DVDs that you'll never see for long periods of time?
Theoretically speaking, with 1,000 DVDs (assuming that you watch 1 different DVD per night) you won't get back to the top of the order until almost 3 years later - and with work/family/friends getting in the way, it could be much longer than that.

I'm sure they are to a certain extent. Though I did check through some posters' collections who were over 1000 limit and I have to admit there quite a few movies I would never buy, but that's just me. I'm at 575 right now. And I consider myself "picky" I rarely buy Hollywood's weekly releases. I go through my collection every once and a while and look at each title and ask my self if I really need that movie. That's why I have over 800 DVDs. If I had to, I could get it down to 700 that I could never get rid of. But that's it.

pdjennings (http://pdjennings.com/dvd.htm)
The first impression that you might have about pdjennings's collection of over 2800 titles is "Wow, he must have everything!" But comparing his collection to mine of just over 200, I find a lot of titles I have that he doesn't. So, I ask myself, "would I trade my collection for pdjennings's?" I'm disallowing "sell off what you don't want to buy what you do" or "replace what you're missing" tactics; this is a straight-up trade, no substitutions.
I'd have to say no. Sure, it'd be nice to have that full run of Deep Space Nine or fill out my missing Oz seasons. But give up my Hitchcock titles, Marx Brothers, Red Dwarf, Cosmos, The Manchurian Candidate, etc. ? No thanks.

Austin and Jennings, I don't see any logical reason for you to have this many DVDs. You two are definitely DVD Whores. It sounds more like a problem then an addiction. And even if I had all the money in the world. I still wouldn't have that many. Why even risk buying a crap film like Gummo just to see if you like it? Netflix is your friend. I mean, if you have 2000 to 6000 DVDs, that pretty much says you buy everything that comes out, whether you saw it or not. Why? Even if you are buying simply for collecting purposes, how often does one of your DVDs turn into a Salo? Just about never. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but that's just my opinion.

I have about 1600 titles, sort of beyond the point of control both counting and storage wise.
I buy most of my DVDs either because I want to see the movie [for the First time] or because I want the movie for my collection [i.e I have seen it before]. I dont go to the cinema anymore and I dont have a cable or satellite movie channel - so I think the cost of a DVD is an acceptable price to pay for me and my wife to watch a movie. I bought the majority of my DVDs over 2 years ago.
The last 2 years I probably only added about 1 title a week to my collection. I love having a large collection of DVDs - both as a source of entertainment and also just as a library. I also enjoy designing new covers and changing the covers for custom covers. Its a good hobby. Unfortunately I have to store a lot of my DVDs in Case Logic Folders as I just dont have the space to put them on Shelves any more.
Like a few people here I am starting to rethink my purchasing and collection size decisions. I recently started to whittle my collection back and hope to get it down to around 1000 titles. Which is really the space I have on the shelves in the living room for the regular amaray cases. My plan at the moment is to have 3 levels to my collection - a core of about 400 titles that I consider essential - about 400 more that are borderline essentials, that 800 is my main collection and about 200 DVDs that are to watch. If I like those they may enter the main collection but most likely they will be traded on quickly.
So add me to the over 1000 group!
KPlummer
06-08-04, 12:10 PM
Last summer I was bordering 700 myself, but then I looked at my collection, the space it was taking, the number of unopened discs, etc etc. I am under 200 right now and I am still swapping out some titles, but my collection is becoming more personal. I used to sit down on sunday for a movie, look through my collection and think about how many titles i just didnt want to watch. Now it takes 10 minutes just to figure out which one I want to watch more than the others. To each their own, but my personal preferance is to not water down my titles. I still have plenty that I want, but I dont think I will ever reach 500 again, let alone the 1000's.

This is me, though on a much larger scale. I'm at a little over 300, but I can easily see me hitting 1,000 in the (distant) future. I dohave admittedly mainstream tastes (although I do like a lot of the lesser-known stuff that I've seen), so it's easy to find a lot of titles that I'll enjoy. Plus, my wife is just as into collecting them as I am (if not more so) and she buys a ton of movies that she likes that I wouldn't have bought (Pearl Harbor comes to mind). So, all that combined can easily push me higher and higher and I have no problem with that. Having a library of films at my fingertips is my goal anyway.

I'm a few away from 1400... at least twice a year I'll skim through my collection & pull out about 20-30 & sell them off, then I treat myself to some exotic Criterions. I know it's not cost efficient, but I do a lot of blind buys & some of them really aren't worth keeping.

Just for the record I am not collecting for the value. I am collecting because I enjoy movies. Most of the material I have. Netflix doesn't. Much of it is out of print and not obtainable except out of the collection. Also with the way Netflick does business, I would be put in the group that would be at the bottom of the heap in getting material. I watch around 10 to 15 per week. I just had to clarify this.

Well, you might as well call me an addicted DVD whore too. I have around 6,000.
According to http://hometheaterinfo.com/dvdlist.htm there are over 44,000 DVD titles currently available.
I own about 13.6% of the total available number of titles. Obviously I and others do not "buy everything that comes out." We are still selective. So what if maybe our tastes are more eclectic than yours ... or our tastes are less discriminating than yours ?? Does it have to make sense?? It does to me and that is all that matters to me and that is my opinion.

I remember when there were only 300 movies to choose from. Back in late 1997 I started buying DVDs even before I had a machine to play them. That X-mas I got a new computer with DVD player so that is how I first saw them. That first year I had about 6 movies. In 1998 I was buying one a week or more. In 1999 I went insane and made it to 500. At one time I though I count not possibly need or want any more but as older favorites came out and TV shows started to be had it just kept on going.
It's been 6 1/2 years. I passed 1000 but seemed to have floated here for all 2004 with trade-ins keeping me steady. Out of my collection I have about 100 DVDs that are for the kids or with other people in mind. I keep telling myself, no more TV shows but just went and got Northern Exposure (at least it had a short run). I don't know when I'll finish DS9, Buffy, X-files, Angel but at least I'm up to date with Stargate, STNG, B5, Farscape, and LEXX.

Its not to say people with smaller collections don't have broad tastes or even that people who do have big collections have too broad of tastes its just about what you like. To some degree, I wonder if a collection size is somewhat proportional to the person's income. I own about 140 DVDs... going to be about 155 when I get those muppet dvds. I'm constantly looking for ways to purge my collection. I used to try to keep it at 100 or less, but its gotten harder. :)
I don't make much money. On top of that, I'm trying to get rid of CC debt. I don't buy many DVDs anymore, but I usually request them as gifts or buy some if I come in to extra cash.

I too would have trouble finding 1000 movies I would want to own right now. If I think I might want to watch it again, I'll keep it. If it has no replay value for me, out it goes. Might as well make room on the shelf. I do understand why some people continue to keep movies they may never have time or interest to watch again. Many are completists for genres, directors or actors. They just like having them. My uncle has close to 20,000 CD's. Some he doesn't care for but they're part of a broader collecting picture.

To some degree, I wonder if a collection size is somewhat proportional to the person's income
I would say no.
I spent more than the average cost of 1000 dvd's on my theater. I watch the DVD's I have along with HD TV there and enjoy what content I have.
I too would have trouble finding 1000 movies I would want to own right now
I don't think I could find 500!

hell...I'm having a hell of a time not buying at least 10 a week. so finding more than 1,000 is too easy for me. it's hard keeping it under 2,000 titles by x-mas.....and I should break that mark by December. with so many imports grabbing my attention, finding a mix of that and domestic films that I still dont have is too easy. all that and I dont even come close to buying everything that comes out. you can own 2,000 and still be very selective. thats obvious from looking at my collection.

I own about 13.6% of the total available number of titles. Obviously I and others do not "buy everything that comes out." We are still selective. So what if maybe our tastes are more eclectic than yours ... or our tastes are less discriminating than yours ?? Does it have to make sense?? It does to me and that is all that matters to me and that is my opinion.
give me a break. owning 6000 dvds does not mean you are selective. jsut because there are 44000 dvds to buy? you have to look at it fairly - 6000 dvds is more dvds than 99.9999% of dvd owners have - you are are NOT selective at all.

I have over 3000 DVDs, possibly more than 4000 now (I stopped counting). All legit "retail" stuff, too.
But anyone who knows who I am (TVShowsOnDVD news director) won't be too surprised by that! ;)
It's not just TV shows, either...I own lots of films. I'm practically a junkie for this stuff. The question I'm frequently asked is "Where do you put them all?" The answer is: EVERYWHERE! :D

As a owner of a large amount of dvds and other movies, I have to inform you that Light Trinity is correct and we are both selective. In the average week, there are around 100 new dvds that come out. Many of these I am not interested such as the nonfiction or the children. Some are too expensive and you have to wait for a price drop. Others are not too my taste. When you narrow down the list only about 10% of what is coming out. I would say that was selective.

I have around 650. But I count each disc in a multi-disc set seperately. i.e. box sets, and tv series.
Even then, once a year I go through and decide what I probably won't watch again or don't need, so I sell a bunch. So mine hovers between 600-650.
I find it hard to believe that there are people out there who canNOT find 2000 dvd's they'd like to own, for the right price. Especially now that music dvds and concerts are being produced at an alarming rate, usually in amazing 5.1 dd/dts sound, I wonder why anyone buys cd's anymore. My newest dvd that I just watched was that new Tori Amos dvd 'from sunny florida', which was 10 bucks from Fry's. over 2 hours of music, in 5.1, stunning sound and performance. Who wouldn't want that? And I wasn't even a huge Tori Amos fan, though I think I will convert now.
Its funny to see that a lot of the dvdtalk old-timers have all increased their collections to around the same 1500-2000 range. I haven't looked in that 'how many dvd's do you own' thread in a long time (in fact, does that thread even exist anymore??).
As far as storage: I built a row of shelves about 3 feet wide, going from floor to ceiling next to my audio/visual setup. Each shelf is barely taller than a dvd. So I have something like 10 or 12 shelves floor to ceiling. This is more than enough to hold the 1500 or so that I really like and keep, and it really doesn't take up any room at all that is usable for any other purpose. And it looks kind of cool -- my original intention was to build a sliding opaque screen, similar to a japanese rice-paper screen door to cover the dvds. But I found them asthetically pleasing enough grouped tightly together as they are, that I found the cover unnecessary.
I also have a separate selling room, where I keep all my crap I am selling, such as duplicate dvds, dvds I hated, cds, lps and books that I am selling, etc.

Maybe if you columbia house over and over and put a ton of time into share the love and other deals or buy mostly used DVDs.
Most DVDs are around $15 at launch and $20 after that, with the less popular ones hitting $14.99-9.99 racks after a few months.
Still, even at $10 a pop, 6,000 DVDS would cost $60,000. So you wouldn't have to be filthy rich to buy that many, but that's a ton of money to spend on a Hobby none the less.

I don't agree that the average price is less than $10. But even if every one of those 6000 DVDs cost $10, that means it cost $60,000 to buy those DVDs. That's not casual spending money for the average person.

No, considering that is more than double my yearly salary. There is no way I could even approach that. I don't know if there are that many DVDs I'd want. I think if I bought everything that is currently released that I want, I'd probably own about 500 DVDs.... maybe.

Christmas and my birthday is a great stock-up time for me and DVDs. I am no longer able to work, but it's all I ask for when it comes to gift-giving time....anyone asks for a suggestion from me and they get a list of DVDs I'd love to own. If they purchase me just one DVD from my list, I'm thrilled, but for the past three years, all I get from my Dad at Christmas time is DVDs. My girlfriend gets the money from Dad the day after Thanksgiving, places a major order and he's done with me....he's thrilled and so am I! I currently have just over 750 DVDs in my collection and I have a ton more I'd love to own. Sure, not being able to work anymore does afford me more film viewing than the average person who must juggle a job and other outside activities, but my illnesses limit what I'm able to do, so this is not only a great form of entertainment for me, it helps keep my mind of other less-than-happy things going on in my life, at the moment.

People are different... I disagree with you big time, but you are still a pretty young dude, too (correct me if I am wrong... pretty sure I remember this from your past posts though), so I think that those of us with a few years on you have had the opportunity to be interested in films for a good bit longer than you and therefore have built up a longer list of favorites than you. Plus, everyone has different ideas about what is worth owning. I have a lot of titles that people I know have never heard of or would think are "crap" but I would never consider getting rid of them because to me they are great films that are important to have on hand to view at a whim and part of the library that will enable me to share my interest in film with my children. Some of you are firm believers in netflix and renting, but I am convinced that it is a much better value to buy movies since I know that *if* I want to I can always sell the movie and get back enough of what I invested to have spent less than a rental, plus I have the power and flexibility to watch it at my leisure.
Some people are just more passionate about film than others. Personally, I think I would rather have no DVDs than only a hundred or so all of which I had seen before. I have so many films that I have seen that I have not yet had a chance to go back and dig through the special features like commentaries yet that I may never get through all of the extras, but it's all there at my disposal for when I want it. I know this is kind of a rant, but I disagree with you being so hard line saying that there is no way people could be selective and still own thousands of films. There is a certain value element that comes into play, sure, but I am sure that if you asked anyone here with 1000 plus DVDs they can give you a list of movies that they would never buy at any price. For example, gutwrencher likes "nunsploitation" titles... I for one, have never bought a nunsploitation title and can't imagine any price that would make me want to own one... it's just not for me, but I have some titles that others with just as many or more DVDs than I have would rip on and call crappy or whatever and that's ok... to each his own.

you mentioned age, and I agree with you on those points. another thing is...when yer 40 or over, you tend to be a bit more stable than some of the younger crowd...meaning $ is easier to come by and you can explore deeper into the film world as far as building and maintaing a library goes. if the $ is there....and you have a wide taste...you just might end up with all the titles you've ever wanted, and thats my goal. also, being a completist helps add to the total. My main problem was the worry of something going OOP or not being able to find it, or spending more then i'd have to, so i'd pre order everything that was affordable and not worry about it. But since then i've relized i'll always be able to buy the dvds, somehow some way, so why be in a rush? Now I only buy movies i really really enjoy or something to finish off a "set" (i.e national lampoon's christmas vacation).... but i'm in no real rush!

Again, if you can only find 150 movies tops of all time that you love in one way or another, your tastes aren't as broad as many. Maybe that's why you have trouble thinking of X number of titles to own. I myself could think of 150 in each genre that I would love to own. To each his own I guess.

To the guy that is asuming that each dvd costs $10, the prices have dropped so that you can pick up many dvd for around $6.
Regarding, nunsploitation - there was actually a movie made in the 70s that could be put into that catagory. It features nuns who worshipped Satan, had sex orgies, and committed acts of violence. It was one of the few sex films that ever earned an x rating other that porno films. I can't recall the title.

There are a few reasons to buy other then just viewing them. I have a section of 30 dvds for the kids that maybe I have seen half but don't care if I never see them. If I buy to sell it isn't counted in my collection. Sometimes I buy to finish out a set or collection. I never finished viewing Space 1999 but one rainy day I may. At one time I would have gotten all the Batman movies because I love 1 and 2 but controled myself. Not all the Hellraiser movies are good but I have and seen them all. A few I will not rewatch but I will not sell them, same with Nighmare on Elm street. I have all the X-files but do not watch all the shows over, I have my favorites. On the other hand I was able to purchase all 3 seasons of Beastmaster, viewed them all and sold them. I got them for $20 each, never saw the show on TV but love the original movie so gave it a chance.
P.S. I count a season of a show as 1 even if it has 8 disks. If I counted how many disks I have it would be well over 2000. There are a ton of movies that I want but will not buy because it isn't in my budget. At one time I didn't think I would pass over 300 but realized that was just wishful thinking. I love Sci-Fi and will watch it till I die. :)

I stopped counting at around 1200. I'm probably north of 1500 now, although I bought my first DVD player in 1998, so I've been at this a while. I bet I've probably only watched 400 of those discs. But you never know when the others will come in handy.
I'd say I'm happy with 95% of my collection -- I used to buy more mass market new releases than I do now, but the advent of plentiful used DVD markets make that unnecessary. Anything semi-popular (and even some arthouse films) will be available for $10 or less in six months.

'there is only about 100 left that I want. 1000 seems a long way away.'
That's what I thought about 700 DVDs ago. :)
'with so many imports grabbing my attention, finding a mix of that and domestic films that I still dont have is too easy.'
Ditto. In the past year my collection grew by about 800 DVDs. There so many interesting movies outside the US I couldn't imagine owning 200 DVDs anymore.
About Netfix, I sorta live outside the US, so that's not even an option for me.
'I cant help it if I own 3 copies of Tenebre'
Ditto here. Hero and The Killer are just too good. You just can't have ONE copy of those movies. :)
I bought my first player on Boxing Day 1998, and by Sep 2003, I had 135. My collection really blew up since then. I WILL watch everything I own, it's just a question of when.
I have many doubles which are in DVDprofiler and DVDaf, some I'll keep, some I should take out. I also have many box sets. DVD profiler says I own 891, but with the doubles I should get rid of, and the set that have more than one movie, I'm proababy around 950 movies owned. The DVDprofiler number will probably go north of 1000 by November. The problem with me is when I see 'LE', I have to buy. :)
I buy movies because I love them. I'm not a businessman so all the doubles I just give away; I've never used Ebay or anything like that to get rid of titles. I'm a collector. I buy DVDs I want, whether they're hard to find or not. I buy whatever I can in stores over here and get the rest by Internet.

Over 800 and a 1000 is easily reachable. Its just a matter of money because something I want is always being released.
I started in 1998 and was a gluton during the cheap DVD days of the late 90's. My collection has had to grow much slower the last few years, but there is still a large number of films and shows I want on DVD.

Needing to clear some space for new titles, I went through the rows to pull some that I could sell on dvds123.com.

Is e-Bay the best place to get rid of titles like this for cash? dvds123 is only offering $77 for it.

Hi Austin. Just out of curiousity what kind of DVD player do you use to watch your dvds? I assume you have some sort of 200 or 300 disc changer? Certainly having a majority of your discs stored across multiple dvd changers(Sony's inparticular allows them to be daisy chained) would be the best solution no?

Wow!! I must say this thread has amazed me.
I've just joined up to these forums, so please welcome the newbie, but I have been reading DVD talk for quite a while.
I have 180 DVDs at present, and never even imagined getting to a mark like 1000. People that know me or those I tell I have 180 already think I'm nuts. I suppose if I wanted I could add another 200 or so that I could possibly want, but I guess my tastes are a little more mainstream than those peple with larger collections. Some of the titles I have read in their collections I have never even heard of let alone would consider buying. I guess I haven't really been "exposed" to many of the more obscure titles, so how can I buy them if I don't even know of them?
I missed out on the crazy coupon deals some have eluded to. Maybe because I'm from New Zealand, so I need to find reputable dealers who ship internationally (mainly Amazon). Plus the NZ dollar is fairly weak so it does get pretty pricey. I would have to say though I've spent 3 times as much on hardware. Are these people who have 1000's watching them on $50 players and 21" tv's? To me the major feature of DVD is the sound and picture quality, so I'd rather shell out on hardware upgrades than purchase 100's of titles I'll never get time to watch.

Dude, are you crazy? I'm from NZ and I buy all my DVD's online (90% R1, 10% R2/4) and I save buttloads! The NZ pricing sucks major ass, they only ever sell retail ($40), and their idea of a special is $3 or $4 off  Ok sometimes Whitcoulls do a special on the first week, but it's still nothing compared to what I can get it for overseas.
Hell, a Simpsons season retails for NZ$120 and I got the R1 for under NZ$50. Buffy retails for an insane NZ$180 and I got it for NZ$65 (I know the Buffy price has come down recently, but it had been out for a good 3 years before that happened). If that's not saving money, then I don't know what is. All you need to do is spend some time comparing prices, and you could get it cheaper than here by miles, even with the international shipping (with DVDSoon and CD-Wow, you can avoid shipping costs altogether!).
Plus the dollar isn't doing bad at all against the American, lately. It sucked when it was at 45 cents ages ago, but now it's staying around 66 cents which is really good. I usually go with the Canadian retailers because our dollar is even better against them. But I always compare them both to make sure.
Plus it's cool when R1 gets the release way before us. I saw 13 Going On 30 in the cinema, went home, ordered it online, and had it in my hands a week later. If that doesn't rock, I don't know what does.

That's so insane. When I saw an ad for that the other day, I thought it was a misprint! I haven't been paying attention to the KB releases that much, since I'm going to wait until they all get released to make my decision, but us getting it now is ridiculous
I only have 56 DVD's. It seems (well, is) a pathetic amount, but I'm not exactly rolling in it at the moment. Plus 60% of those are TV box sets, so I have alot of multiple DVD sets.
I can't imagine myself going over even 200. I don't watch many movies (relatively), and there's only so many TV shows I'd buy on DVD.
Still, they're all ones I watch regularly, so I feel it's a nice little collection :)

I crossed over 1,700 titles just last week, but that amount will drop by about 20 titles later today. I've decided to weed-out the wifes titles and a few of my own stinkers. of course I have another shipment of 8 coming sometime this week...so I guess I'll be back over 1,700. I guess I just wasted mine and everyone elses time by writing this.
still have the goal of 2,000 titles by just after new years. I'll get there....by a hair.

I'm just curious when I see people mention they want to get to a certain number of DVDs by a particular time--is this in reference to your wish lists or just that number of DVDs in general?
Take someone like Gut for instance. He's about 300 titles short of 2,000, but he's got hundreds of titles on his wishlist and is seemingly picking at least a few new releases every week. So his goal doesn't seem like it's all about the number game, since there are probably a few hundred discs out there of his interest.
But I've seen people here with a couple hundred discs saying they want to get 1000. Now, in some cases, there may be hundreds and hundreds of titles out there that interest you, but I get the feeling that some are just pushing towards having 1000 DVDs. It's quite a feat, but it's not one I'd shoot for myself if I didn't have 1000 titles in my range of interest. I've got a shade over 200 right now and at the moment, only have less than 50 on my wish list. Granted that there's a lot out there that I haven't come across or thought of when I compiled the list, but I can't see myself hitting the 1000 mark even if I had that much money to spend.
Obviously others have a much broader taste than me, but I still get the sense that a few people are more about collecting DVDs and not so much films.

Just went over 300 DVD, I have been buying DVD for 4 years and 3 months. At this rate it will take me another 8 years to go over 1000.
I only buys movies I will really watch over and over again within a one year. This has helped me to keep my DVD budget in check.
I am going to pick up I Love Lucy S2 and The Passion of Christ tomorrow, then Star Wars later this month.
That will make only about 12 DVDs bought from June 1st to the end of Sept.

All thanks to my new passion and now...serious hobby...The rivers. I'd rather, at this point, invest my extra cash in kayaks, kayaks and more kayaks. Add 1 canoe. Its not like we haven't been double dipping on DVDs for years. I am doing the same thing with HD DVD. If the movie is one I want in HD DVD I will sell the DVD version and buy it in HD DVD. In some cases I will stick with the DVD it will be a movie by movie basis.

Ummm....so just because a new format is coming out, DVD is "about to become obsolete?" It's going to be a LONG time before Blu-Ray/HD-DVD overtake DVD, if ever. How many times has this been addressed?
But to answer a question that's been asked many times before, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD doesn't affect my DVD buying one bit. I'm at 1136 and counting.

So you plan on continuing to buy movies in a format that is about to become obsolete?
Unless I've misread, regular DVDs will be upconverted or at the very least backwards compatible with HD-DVD players so I don't see where regular DVDs would be obsolete in the near future if ever. Another point for me is the older movies, like Citizen Kane, Sunset Blvd, etc. there's not much to improve on in that department. There's only so much you can do to make those look and sound better. So, for me, HD would really only be applicable for new films.

Yes and they will eventually join my laserdiscs on the archive shelves. Of course no one is 100% certain that HD or Blu-Ray will survive either. No way I'm NOT going to buy a movie I want when there is no given date for an HD release.

Actually thought that I was around 900.
My collection is probably 45% Region 1 (US/Canada bought) / 50% Region 4 (Australian) and 5% Region 2 (UK).
I only wish that I had started purchasing DVDs NOW - with the fall in prices of the majority of my collection - I probably would have saved 1/2 of the price that paid (granted - I don't buy ANY TITLES over $A14 anymore !!)

Though I did check through some posters' collections who were over 1000 limit and I have to admit there quite a few movies I would never buy, but that's just me. I'm at 575 right now. And I consider myself "picky" I rarely buy Hollywood's weekly releases. I seem to average a little over 100 a year since I got my first DVD player so I can definitely see me getting up 1000 someday but by then all these guys will have like 4000.
Holy crap. I'm up to like 1009 now and its only 2 years 2 months later! How did I manage to buy 435 DVDs in that little time?

You think that's wild? I've added about 100 or so DVDs to my collection just in the last two or three months alone. Of course, much of that is because of the DDD sale, FYE mistake, and CH. :)

I just peaked over 1000 a little while back.
I've since curbed my DVD spending majorly though.

I've almost got 600, but I have aout 800 in my wishlist. Buying movies that I like keeps me sane for some reason.

According to my DVDaficionado list (http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?id=tummler&count=title), I own 2581 titles with 14 more on order. (That's including hidden folders for future sales/trades and some especially unsavory and/or embarrassing films.) I hit the 2000 mark in January 2006 -- various DDD sales, continued (ab)use of Columbia House, and some big Hong Kong orders have really bloated the ol' library this year. I've probably watched over 60% of all the DVDs I've ever owned, so there does seem to be light at the end of the tunnel.
I've been buying DVDs for about four and a half years. The purchase of a 65" rear-projection TV is what really kicked off the habit. When I first started collecting, there were only a few dozen titles I wanted to own -- mainly well-known comedies, horror, and science fiction. The DVD format (in conjunction with informative sites like DVD Talk, where I've lurked for years) has made it possible for me to appreciate a broader spectrum of cinema than I ever would have thought possible. My appreciation of film has also deepened considerably.
Except for Hong Kong movies (about a quarter of my collection), I consider myself a selective collector. Increasingly, I'm avoiding a lot of mainstream Hollywood fare that I anticipate would not have lasting value for me. If I know I'll never want to watch something again, I'll try to get rid of it. I've sold/traded over 400 DVDs so
