The folks at Davis DVD are reporting that a new Candyman DVD is coming in August (with a commentary). What a great flick! The cover looks kind of questionable but oh well, it's still a kick-ass movie.

I haven't seen this one in years - thanks for the heads-up!
You think the cover art is bad...wait until you see the menus. They're horrible and don't fit the movie at all.

At least we have the new DVD. Sheesh.

One of the scarier flicks I've seen. The scene with the littel kid in bathroom outside the projects freaks me out every time.
Any other specs on this? I'll upgrade if it's got a DD5.1 track.

Yeah, i was watchin it again on TV last night and will upgrade my copy since I only paid $5.99 for it. This one should be better no matter what. Cover is easily replaced with a custom one.

IMO, the cover wouldn't be so bad if they removed Tony Todd and brought the hook a little bit more to the front. Anyway, glad to hear a SE is coming out... Any specs?

Specs are as follows:
"The disc will feature a 1.85 anamorphic transfer, DD 2.0 Surround sound, an audio commentary track with director Bernard Rose, the all-new "Sweets to the Sweet: The Candyman Mythos" featurette (featuring interviews with Rose, Clive Barker, actors Tony Todd, Virginia Madsen and Kasi Lemmons), "Clive Barker: Raising Hell" featurette, original storyboards and bonus trailers."
I'll be double dipping on this regardless of the atrocious Coverart and lack of a remastered 5.1 track.

You know, I had to concentrate to figure out that was a hook in the background. Looks like some kind of curled worm to me. Horrid cover
But one of the best horror movies ever. Definitely picking this one up.

Saw this in the theater when it came out, probably my favorite Clive Barker movie so far and have been waiting for a "better version" on DVD for a while now before I plonked down the cash for it. Remembering the great sound design of the hook ripping through flesh still gives me the willies. Nice score from Philip Glass to boot !!!

DD 2.0 Surround sound MORONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
barley no special features and no good sound, pointless buying it, and the covers crap. Stick with the old one which is almost free. :)

"Be my Victim..."
Those words have always given me the chills when I think of Candyman.
I've waited a while for the SE. The cover does blow and it's sad that they couldn't remaster the sound (maybe if we're lucky, Sony'll have a change of heart and fix it up), but I'll still get it because I love Candyman. Such a great scary movie.

i actually dont want this. but ill still get it. i borrowed this movie from my neighbors house when i was very very young. i watched it at night when my parents weren't around me, same with boogie nights. nightmares for a week. (no not from boggie nights) that scene with the little boy with his stomach split open in the bathroom screaming for his mother was easily the most disturbing thing i have ever seen in my life

Glad I held off on this also. I am disappointed about the lack of 5.1.

So far this looks like a Gneral Columbia SE reissue; take the original DVD, change nothing as far as picture and sound, and release with new material. That's actually pretty adequate in most cases, but...
... is this a new transfer? The one of the last DVD was ugly and lacked detail.
... is that a misprint, or a misquote, as far as the sound goes? Really, even Groundhog Day got a remastered 5.1 track in addition to the original sound; the remastered sound on GD sounds MUCH clearer.
... and I kinda dig the cover. Reminds of the graffitti from Cabrini.

C'mon the Dolby surround 2.0 track is great and very atmospheric and effective.
Those saying the film scared the crap out of you when released and some scenes disturbed you...saw it with stereo surround sound.
So what makes you think the 5.1 will make it 'better',when it is already very effective?
A stupid reason not to get a dvd. That is just as absurd as not buying a dvd because it has mono audio, which is the original audio.
We don't need 5.1 on every film...unless the film was originally made in 5.1;)

I will get it for the commentary, clive barker docu, and other stuff. I dont care about the sound, it will be loud enough. Its not like a war movie or sci fi where it needs good 5.1

A little off topic but if you're intrested, there's a candyman 4 in the works.
I'll probably be picking this up eventually because I go to the University of Illinois At Chicago where it was set and some of it was filmed. Got to watch it in class last semmester.

After spending $2000 on my dual SVS subs I would have liked to seen a LFE channel. Dolby Pro Logic II doesn't cut it as DD 5.1 or DTS.
Seeing as I have held off on buying the original in hopes of a new transfer may have paid off, but I may look International for a decent DVD release for this movie.

Horror soundtracks especially benefit from 5.1 soundtracks, with noises where you'd never expect noises to eminate from.

I've already got the initial release on DVD. This movie freaked me out, and I watched it at home in the middle of the day...with my dad!
I'd love to hear an upgraded bass for this movie..."Be my victim...." ;)

DVDFile has a notice stating that the transfer has been remastered. This is obviously great news, though I still pine to that Philip Glass soundtrack in 5.1.

If the transer is indeed a new one, I'll definitely pick this movie up... Candyman is one of my favourite horror flicks of all time... I wish I could be the one directing Candyman 4....anyhow, if the movie itself is improved, I'll buy it, but I won't upgrade for those anemic extras.

it's BLASPHEMY for having a lack of a 5.1 track since the philip glass score is the most essential part for making that film as great as it was. But, it's nice to see a new transfer & extras. So it will be mine.
IMO Candyman was the last truly great horror film.

I've have to admit, this movie freaked me out as well, I kind of forgot about it all this time for some reason, but that's what the forum is for  I'll be picking this one up.

Here's the DVD Talk review:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=11804
A surprise not advertised on the case or in prerelase materials: The commentary is actually by Bernard Rose, Alan Poul (producer), Clive Barker, Tony Todd, Virginia Madsen, and Kasi Lemmons. Very entertaining and informative.

You can read our review of the new Columbia Tristar release of Candyman Special Edition here (http://www.dvddebate.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4598&mode=&order=0&thold=0).
Snippet:
Candyman is a strong horror movie, directed with style and passion and visual flair. It has heavy, portentous themes about faith, myth, alienation and the sickness of society yet it never preaches nor condescends. There may be the odd loose end left flapping, there could one or two leaps of logic and the final shock perhaps panders too much towards marketing, but this is solid, hardcore horror from two talented showmen who sadly do not have enough shows with which to dazzle us … at the moment.

emhello, as someone who kept his original, bare-bones DVD for the trailer missing from the S.E., I compared both and the transfers are completely, totally, exactingly identical.
